What is Classroom
Composting?
by Sooji Seo, Grade 8
friend - Bhon. This ‘thought-dictator,’
also known as the MS president, was
my first-ever friend. Kindergarten
opened my sealed lips. I actually
talked instead of just listening in the
background like I did in Pre-School.
As the years went by, I grew smarter
and earned more and more friends
– most of them are my best friends
today. Teachers became friends,
and friends became teachers. Before
I knew it, my classroom became
a society, where everyone knows
everyone else.
According to the Princeton Dictionary,
a school is a building where young
people receive education. I can say
that RIS has brought me more than
that, or more than any words could
express. I have gained confidence,
everlasting friends, knowledge, and
also a new parent each year. This is
more than any parent could expect
from a school.
hroughout Earth Week, there were
Tmany events prepared by many
students. One of the special projects
was “Classroom Composting” in Ms.
Jennifer’s Discovery Science class.
The students, during the classes,
made a mini compost and learned
about it. The class also presented their
composting to whole Middle School
student body at Tuesday’s assembly.
Students learned what composting
is and why it is beneficial for the
environment.
So what is composting? Well,
composting is simply used every day
and nearly everywhere around us. For
instance, leaves from the trees, dead
animals and plants, simply decay
and mix with soil, which makes rich,
dark and healthy soil. Similar to
composting in nature, decayed food
wastes, mixed with soil, and put in
a two liter bottle, make classroom
composting.
So why compost? We compost
because we can make a better
environment. First, the composting
can be used by other living organisms
and become their food. Composting
can make the soil more nutritious
adding high carbon and nitrogen,
which makes plants grow well and
provide more oxygen for us humans.
I believe our environment is very
important to us. We tell everyone to
protect and help to make our living
places better. There is quote that
says, “Things are dependent on how
the person’s action is changed.” In
another words, we should change
our thoughts to help the environment
and challenge ourselves to make the
composting cycle work even better
than it does in nature. Let’s work
together to make the Earth a better
place!
