After commission<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> storage filled over a period <strong>of</strong> almost 10 years, <strong>and</strong> annual<br />

releases were relatively stable for many years. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> severe droughts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ethiopian highl<strong>and</strong>s dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1980s, <strong>the</strong> lake levels decl<strong>in</strong>ed progressively, rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

well below <strong>the</strong> flood storage pool for many years before beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to recover<br />

commenc<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> very large flood <strong>in</strong> 1988, see Figure(7). A sequence <strong>of</strong> generally<br />

above- average flood, commenc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1998 <strong>and</strong> culm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 2001, pushed lake storage<br />

well <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> flood storage zone with releases <strong>of</strong> unprecedented magnitude s<strong>in</strong>ce dam<br />

commission<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> a record high lake level <strong>of</strong> approximately 181.6 m was reached <strong>in</strong><br />

2001.<br />

Downstream <strong>of</strong> HAD, <strong>the</strong> Nile cont<strong>in</strong>ues a fur<strong>the</strong>r 1 182 km to reach <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean<br />

Sea. <strong>The</strong> river between HAD <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> delta is divided <strong>in</strong>to four ma<strong>in</strong> reaches by a series <strong>of</strong><br />

barrages. <strong>The</strong>se are Esna, Naga Hammadi, Asyut <strong>and</strong> Delta Barrages. At <strong>the</strong> Delta<br />

Barrage <strong>the</strong> river enters <strong>the</strong> delta, bifurcat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to two ma<strong>in</strong> branches, <strong>the</strong> Rosetta Branch<br />

<strong>and</strong> Damietta Branch.<br />

Intensive irrigated agriculture is practiced along <strong>the</strong> entire length <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nile River valley<br />

downstream <strong>of</strong> Aswan Dam, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> delta, It is virtually <strong>the</strong> only arable l<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> Egypt.<br />
