VCE
With Semester 2 starting, the focus for independent learning
and self discipline accelerates for all VCE students. Congratulations
to Year 11 as reports from the examiners credited behaviour
and attitudes. I look forward to reading all reports this term. With
Central Australia on the horizon students are reminded of the expectations
for behaviours. Also attendance in class and respect
for uniform are integral parts of the college programme.
Year 12 students face a hectic time in Semester 2. Undoubtedly
this coming vacation is not one as revision of Unit 3 is imperative
re learning and goals whilst Unit 4 warrants extra motivation,
inquiry and self determination and accountability. Study periods
must respect the needs of all and attendance and good health
are major factors of a successful Unit 4. Consider timelines and
ensure you communicate clearly with teachers. To those involved
in Production, Sport and other events we are pleased and trust a
balance of time and energy does you justice.
MAROONDAH DAYLIGHT LODGE – KEITH HOLLINGSWORTH
Mrs J. Hughes
Assistant Principal
From Mr Salisbury ...
What a vibrant and busy term it’s been and most of the school
community is looking forward to a well-earned break. It is important
to finish the term off in a positive manner and students need
to ensure all set work such as assignments and projects are submitted
and sufficient preparation is undertaken for assessment
tasks. Teachers are currently writing reports and we look forward
to many outstanding student performances.
YEAR 10 STUDENTS - LAPTOPS
During the first two weeks of Term 3 your laptops will be getting reimaged
to put new software, software updates, and to create more
space on your laptops.
It is your responsibility to have all your work backed up and saved
onto a different hard drive or USB.
It is required that you all have your laptops reimaged, to ensure all
students have the same software.
Students will be without their laptops for the duration of 2 periods
or a period and lunch. Students will be informed at the start of next
term when their class will have their laptops reimaged.
All students are required to have their laptops at school every day
Some other points:
to ensure this process happens quickly and efficiently.
• Year 10 Work Experience - Best wishes to all our Year 10 stu-
dents who are on Work Experience during the last week of term.
We are confident they will perform outstandingly and thoroughly
enjoy this exciting opportunity. A big thank-you to Mrs Allison for
her enormous efforts in organising such an extensive program
• Facilities -Some exciting work is occurring around the college and
the school environment is continually improving. We have recently
cleared the back and sides of the school boundaries in preparation
for fencing, completed the tank surrounds and commenced work
on the Hill St bank.
• Exams - Congratulations to all students who have recently completed
exams. From all reports the preparation, approach and attitude
of students was exemplary.
• Traffic report - Please encourage your children to be careful if
when crossing Bedford Rd they use the traffic island east of the railway
line. On several occasions it has been over-crowed and groups
of students are spilling dangerously onto Bedford Rd in front of cars.
Thank-you to the many parents who are parking a little distance
away from the college to facilitate traffic management before and
after school. We encourage more parents to utilise this practice.
• Sculpture Competition - Please see the last page of the newsletter
for details on our upcoming sculpture competition. All members
of the college community, including parents, are encouraged
to get involved. Be part of history!
PLAIN ENGLISH SPEAKING ASSOCIATION (PESA)
SEMIFINALS
Ringwood Secondary College May 27 2010
PESA is a Department of Education funded public speaking competition
for senior students in Australia. We hosted two sessions last
Thursday and had students from Aquinas College, Glen Waverley
Secondary College, Caulfield Grammar School, Mt Lilydale Mercy
College, Whitefriars
and Avila College. Our
entrants this year were
Julia Matthews and Andrew
Amos.
Each student had to
speak for 6 minutes on
a topic of their choice
and deliver a 3 minute
speech on a set topic
with only 4 minutes of
preparation. Andrew spoke convincingly about the value of international
friendships drawing upon his recent experiences on World
Tour. Julia’s speech, titled ‘The Last Day on Earth’, presented a very
clear case for the need to address the issue of climate change before
it is too late for our world. She made us all think about how we
use the world’s resources in our daily lives!
In the first session, we heard speeches about terrorism, domestic
violence, bullying, refugee rights and the concept of Australian nationalism.
The secret topic
was the very difficult phrase ‘
The Jury is out’. The variety of
approaches to this topic was
fascinating!
Julia and Andrew each delivered
two great speeches
but in the end Luke Martin of
Lilydale Mercy College won
this semifinal with his very interesting
speech on the rights
of refugees.
The second session also had an interesting range of topics; xenophobia,
the misuse of the English language, Melbourne’s public
transport problems, the Iraq war, Real Men and Peak oil. The secret
topic for this session was ‘ The end of certainty’. Most students
found this very difficult but Estelle Petrie, a student from Aquinas
College, spoke very capably about how the world is always pursuing
the end of certainty with
wars and constant change.
Both her speeches were excellent
and she easily won the
second session.
There are many people who
helped make the day such a
resounding success!
A special thanks must be
given to Liz Matthews, Julia’s
mother, who was a fantastic
Master of Ceremonies for the day. Her assistance was greatly appreciated!
Mrs Gillam did a wonderful job helping me with the preparation of
the secret topic speeches, the setting up of Room 807 in the Technology
Centre. A thank you must also be extended to the ladies in
the Canteen for the catering of food for our guests.
The Year 9 debating team consisting of Mitchell Pirera, Makayla Fra-
Page 4
ser and Harry Frith were wonderful timekeepers over the course of
the day. It was a great opportunity for them to hear such interesting
and varied speeches, as they are eligible to enter this competition
next year. Thank you very much for all your help on the day!
Finally I must thank Joe and Kathryn of the Australian Technical College
for their permission to run this excellent competition in Room
807. It was a great venue for this event as it is a lovely big room that
is not affected by noise from the rest of the school!
EASTERN METROPOLITAN REGIONAL CONCERT ‘ROAMS’ ALL
OVER THE WORLD!!!
The annual Eastern Metropolitan Regional Concert at Hamer Hall
on Tuesday May 25th was again a fantastic success with a sellout
performance. The concert theme for this year was ROAM and the
show transformed the concert hall into a Airbus 3000 and took the
audience on an imaginary flight around the world ending, appropriately,
in Rome! The highly successful show which has been directed
for the last decade by RSC Director of Performing Arts, Mr.
Motton again featured RSC performers in many of the ensembles
and in the transitions between them.
To keep the story line going RSC students were Cabin Crew and Pilots
of the aircraft, a Chinese Official teaching the audience Mandarin,
Irish Rovers, an English Music Hall troupe, a Swiss Watchmaker
and a Hollywood Production Company. Congratulations to all of the
RSC students who were involved in this exciting event that showcases
the talents of students from the entire region.
NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Robert Motton
Director of Performing Arts
The Waverley International Schools Netball Championships
(WISNC) is held annually at the Waverley Netball Centre, hosting
schools from across Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia
and South Africa. Ringwood Secondary College has been competing
in this competition for the last 5 years, this year entering
4 teams, 1 senior girls, 2 junior girls teams and a Boys team. The
championships start on June 29th, with the finals being played for
all divisions on the Friday, July 2nd. Previous campaigns have seen
some terrific results including last year when the junior girl’s first
team did a terrific job and made it to the grand final and came up
against tough Williamstown. They finished 2nd overall. The junior
girl’s second team also did a great job and finished a proud 7th.
The senior girls were undefeated throughout their rounds, and
finished 4th out of 21 teams across the country. Each year Ring-

SLEEP
In the last newsletter our principal gave some tips for the students
going into the exams and the first tip stated ‘keep your regular sleep
routine’. This is because sleep is VITAL to your well being.
Not getting enough sleep can:
• Limit your ability to learn, listen, concentrate and solve problems.
• Make you more prone to pimples.
• Lead to aggressive or inappropriate behaviour such as yelling at
your friends or being impatient with your teachers or family members.
• Cause you to eat too much or eat unhealthy foods like sweets and
fried foods that lead to weight gain.
• Contribute to illness.
Solutions:
• Make sleeping a priority – establish a routine, set a bedtime and
a wake-up time and stick to those times. Decide what you need to
change to get enough sleep for you to remain healthy.
• Make your room your haven, keep it dark and cool and free of
distractions.
• Naps can help but if they are too close to bedtime they can interfere
with your normal sleep.
• Try and have quiet time before going to bed – no computer, TV,
phone etc and you will go to sleep much more quickly.
• Set a routine that you follow each night.
• 20 – 30 minutes physical exercise in the late afternoon.
• Avoid caffeine too close to bedtime so no tea, coffee, coke etc.
Studies have shown that most teens require 8 ½ - 9 hours sleep a
night to perform at their best, by following some of the above suggestions
this may be possible.
