Principal’s
Post ..
Welcome back to all in our school community and the 2013 school
year. I would particularly like to welcome our Year 7 students as
they begin their Ringwood journey and of course all the other new
students at other Year levels. Classes commenced last week and it
has been a busy and productive start of the year for all year levels.
We have already had the announcement of this year’s college
production which will be ‘HAIRSPRAY’. RSC will be one of the first
schools in Australia to stage this colourful and lively show. Our
World Tour group leaves for the USA ON March 2nd and the excitement
is building.
Staffing:
Several new Teaching and Educational support staff have joined us
this year and I would like to extend a warm welcome to them. We
College Council Elections 2013
All government schools have a legally constituted council, which
sets key directions of the school within statewide guidelines. The
Ringwood Secondary College Council plays an important role in influencing
the direction of the college and in ensuring the quality of
educational provision.
Parent membership is important in encouraging a diversity of viewpoints
and skills that contribute to this direction. Nominations are
now open for council and I would invite anyone interested in standing
to contact the college for further details.
Travelling to and from School
It is our expectation that students wear the correct school uniform
when travelling to and from school. We have been generally
pleased with the overall efforts made at the start of the year, but
there is still some room for improvement in some aspects. For example
the girls summer uniform does not include winter skirts and
black socks are not acceptable.
We are always concerned about student safety and ask students to
cross busy roads at appropriate locations like pedestrian crossings
or safety islands. In addition, travelling in small groups is often a
good idea and areas like Ringwood Lake are best avoided when
travelling alone. In addition, students riding to school should have
appropriate safety helmets.
Parents who drive students should be aware of the speed and parking
restrictions near the school, as these are regularly enforced. Often
it is easier to drop children nearby and allow them to walk a few
hundred metres. The car park at the front of the library should not
be used as a drop off point between 8am and 9am or pick up point
between 3.10pm and 3.45pm.
Industrial Campaign for improved wages and conditions
Unfortunately this matter is still unresolved despite a log of claims
being on the table for two years. In the event of the state wide stop
work of teachers and educational support staff on Thursday February
14, a notice will be forwarded home next Tuesday. Negotiations
have been continuing this week, which signals more hopeful signs
than has been the case previously.
Newsletter Number 1 Feb 8, 2013
I am really looking forward to a productive and successful year in
2013 and we will continue to pursue new opportunities for our students
as we prepare for our 60th or Diamond Jubilee celebrations
in 2014.
From Mrs Hughes ..
Michael Phillips
Principal
A warm welcome to all students and families for 2013 and I hope
you all had a relaxing, happy and safe time during the January
break. In particular, welcome to our new cohort of Year 7 students
and new students at other year levels. We are delighted to have you
and your family join our community and trust you will enjoy your
secondary education at the college.
It has been very pleasing to see students settle into classes, being
focused on their work and adjusting to the new daily routine – it’s
quite an adjustment at a very busy time of the year. Year 7 students
in particular have been very keen to use their iPads following the
roll-out in the first few days.
Ladies Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary meets twice each Term to plan and organise
fundraising events to raise money for facilities that improve the college
community. We would be delighted to welcome new members
at our next meeting which will be held on Tuesday, 5 March at
7.30 pm in the conference room.
Second Hand Uniform
The Ladies Auxiliary manages the sale of second hand uniform and
has organised different arrangements for purchasing second hand
uniform items during Terms 2 and 3. Access to items will be available
from Room 411 between 3.30 – 4.30 pm on a designated day
early in each Term. Dates will be published in following newsletters.
School Uniform
Overall students have been wearing the correct uniform but there
are some students wearing incorrect items. The Student Uniform
Code is included in the student diary and we expect students will
bring a signed note from their parent/guardian to their Community
Coordinator if they are out of uniform. As in 2012, uniform detentions
will be held on a regular basis to encourage adherence to the
requirements. We appreciate support of parents in this matter.
From Mr Barut ..
SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS
The Journey Begins
At their opening assembly all
VCE students were asked to
step up into the roles of College
leaders both academically
and holistically and set
the tone for the remainder of
the College cohort.
There are clear expectations
that encompass academic
rigour, exemplary behaviour
and pristine uniform. It
is important that every VCE
student connects with the
College, by building relationships with their teachers and striving
to achieve their personal best.
Thus far, classes have settled well – the academic school year goes
by so quickly, so students must develop a healthy study routine in
a short space of time.
The Senior School team is always available to assist in any matters
pertaining to the well being of our students.
Student Study Skils and Organisation Day.
Year 12 students will be attending a study day @ Swinburne University’s
Lilydale Campus on Friday, 15th of February, starting at
9.00am and concluding at 3.00pm. Notices were distributed this
week and a payment of $50 is due into the general office as soon
as possible.
This cost also covers a lecture by Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, internationally
acclaimed adolescent psychologist. This night is to be held
on Wednesday, 27th of February at Deakin University, Burwood
Campus, Burwood Hwy, Burwood. All parents and students are encouraged
to attend this evening. There is plenty of parking available
on site – please be there by 7.00pm for a 7.15pm start.
Visitors to the College
Throughout the year there may be times when parents/guardians
need to visit the college to discuss a matter with a member of staff.
If this is the case, please contact the college to arrange an appointment
prior to attending – due to teaching commitments, teachers
are often not available during the day. As outlined in our Visitors
Policy, all parents/visitors attending the college must report to the
Administration Office prior to entering other sections of the school.
A pass will be issued enabling access to other areas. Thank you for
your support.
Mrs J. Hughes
Assistant Principal
Welcome to 2013! In the second week of school, students are settling
into the routine of school life and catching up with friends
they had not seen over the summer break. It is great to be back!
The Year 9 Challenge Assembly went smoothly and Year 9 students
listened attentively to an outline of their program for the year. Year
10 students had their first Common Period- a fortnightly session
where they will receive important information related to Careers,
Pastoral care, Leadership and more. The Common period will also
offer opportunities for students to lead the assembly and to listen
to guest speakers.
Mrs. E Stathatos
Assistant Principal
It is pretty scary when you start to see bush fires and floods as a
‘normal’ start to the year for our country. The natural disasters and
weather phenomenon are just the beginning of what makes life so
difficult to navigate. So with all this uncertainty and unpredictability
where can we find stability this year?
As I try and think this through my thoughts are distracted by the
fact that my son will be starting prep next year. Probably similar
to many other parents this spirals into all the fears I have about
how he will go, whether he’ll be bullied, whether he will struggle to
make friends and so on it goes and goes.
Then it strikes me, reflecting on things out of my control and furthermore,
a long way off, is not of any benefit to me. Instead as I
commit to focusing on the present and the things in my control I
realise I have a choice to be positive in my thoughts which, in turn,
impacts heavily on my actions and consequently the outcomes to
my actions. One thing is for certain I cannot control natural disasters
and people for that matter but I can change my attitude and
how I respond to things. What can you change in your approach
this year?
Please remember that I am always available to students, staff and
families of the school so please don’t hesitate to contact me if there
is anything you think I can assist you with.
Work over the Holidays
Over the holidays much work has taken place to improve the facilities
at Ringwood Secondary. Three major projects, including the
Technology Centre expansion, Accessible Bathroom and Rooms
104/105 development are all very close to completion and will be
great assets for the college. Other activities that have occurred over
the holidays include:
-Resealing of the gym, hall and room 700
-Painting of lockers, ladies’ toilet floor and some class
room walls
-Verti-drilling and fertilising of the college oval and
soccer field
-Table top replacement for worst tables
-Repairs to damaged walls
-Poetry boards updated
Facilities Committee
meeting per term and provides participants with the opportunity
to have a voice in improving our school facilities. A warm invitation
is extended to all. Please contact me at school if you are interested.
Working Bee
Don’t miss our first twilight Working Bee in 2013: Friday March 1st-
5.00pm- 7.30pm. A range of activities including basic carpentry,
weeding, pruning, mulching and planting should provide something
for everyone. Pop in for just a short time and make a difference
to our school.
Heritage
Meeting Monday 13th Feb, 7.30pm: All parents interested in finding
out about this exciting committee are most welcome to attend
next Monday’s first Heritage meeting for the year. It will be held in
Melody O’Meara
Hi there, my name is Melody O’Meara
and I am happy to have joined the
English faculty at RSC. I’ve taught
English and English Language in
both country Victoria and the city for
the past seven years since completing
my Arts Degree at Deakin University
and Dip.Ed at the University of
Melbourne. Before I became a teacher
I worked in a range of hospitality
positions in Australia and the U.K. and
enjoy reading, music, seeing friends and watching a bit of Sci. Fi. in
my spare time. Thanks to all the students and teachers who have
made me feel welcome so far and I am looking forward to a fun and
productive year at both junior and senior level.
Jen Currie
Hi, my name is Jen Currie and I’ve recently returned to RSC after
working at an international school in Braunschweig, Germany,
for the past 2.5 years. As a History and Geography teacher, I was
thrilled to be able to explore Europe over my holidays. Highlights
for me were: snowboarding in Austria;
hiking north of the Arctic circle in
Sweden; exploring medieval villages in
France. I am excited to be back, and to
have taken up the position of Year 10
Community Head this year. I have really
enjoyed seeing how much my former
Year 7s have matured into lovely
young adults in Year 10. Now that I’m
back I look forward to exploring more
of Australia, enjoying the sun and surf,
and cooking some German delights
for my friends.
Rachel Edwards
Hi my name is Rachel Edwards. I am very excited about my return
to Ringwood Secondary College after having been on family leave
for a number of years. Returning as
a part time staff member is a perfect
new start as I share the responsibilities
of family life and teaching. I lead a very
busy family life with my husband Scott
and three young sons Jai Jake and
Josh. I enjoy watching them compete
in football, basketball as well as participate
in swimming. My hobbies include
netball and slipping on the runners
to go for a run with my Jack Russell
named Harvey. To conclude, I am really
looking forward to teaching my year 8and 9 Phys Ed classes and
being a part of the Ringwood Secondary College teaching team
throughout 2013.
Jen Condylis
Hello, my name is Jen Condylis. I have come to Ringwood Secondary
from Parkwood Secondary. I worked at Parkwood for ten years
prior to its closure. My methods are 7-12 food tech and junior science;
although at Ringwood I am trying my hand at textiles. I live
about 15 minutes the other side of Yarra Glen on 6.75 acres. I breed
Australia Miniature Goats as a hobby and keep a wide variety of
animals as pets. When I have time, I make cheese, soap and hand lotions.
I also enjoy a bit of crocheting. I have found the staff at Ringwood
to be very welcoming and helpful and I look forward to many
years of teaching here.
Junior School News ..
The Junior School Coordinators warmly welcome all our 2013 Year
7 students to Junior School. Day one was very busy. Students were
introduced to their Form Tutors and spent the morning involved
in a variety of activities. The first session was spent learning how
to use their locks and placing these on their allocated lockers. A
large team of “Supportive Friends” assisted with this activity and
on return to their home room involved students in many “getting
to know you activities”. In session two, students worked through
the booklet “Getting Started at RSC”. In session three, students completed
a tour of the school including a visit to the General Office to
familiarize them with the process of obtaining any necessary pass.
We congratulate them all on a great start to the year.
In the past week it has been very busy with each community of year
7’s completing their
I-Pad training. Over the three sessions students completed all the
tasks to enable them to use this technology successfully. We would
like to thank the team of staff who assisted the Year 7 students with
their efforts.
Transition is now well under way. Please note the following Transition
dates to your Calender.
Learning a musical instrument is a wonderful skill for any child but
did you know that research shows how learning music can help
your child in SO MANY OTHER WAYS:
. Improved reasoning capacity and problem solving skills
. Improved maths and language performance
. Better memory
. Greater social and team skills
A series of research in Hungary found that learning and playing
music improved not only academic performance, but also memory,
reasoning, working as part of a group, time management and the
ability to think in the abstract.
Page 7

Newsletter Number 1 Feb 8, 2013
In Switzerland, a massive two-year study of 1200 students in 50
classes scientifically showed how playing music improved students’
reading and verbal skills through improving concentration, memory
and self-expression.
Other effects revealed by the study showed that students learned
to like each other more, enjoyed school more and were less stressed
during various tests, indicating they were better able to handle performance
anxiety.
Ongoing research at the University of California demonstrates that
learning and playing music builds and modifies neural pathways
related to spatial reasoning tasks, which are crucial for higher brain
functions such as complex maths, chess and science.
Research shows that playing a musical instrument can make significant
differences to students’ abilities related to learning, memory
and social interactions.
Fantastique Saturday
A wonderful way to start off the new year is to celebrate the news
of our Year 12 Media student from 2012, Meleonie Meyer, who has
been accepted into Top Designs. We are thrilled that she has this
opportunity to showcase her work to a wider audience. I would like
to congratulate her teacher’s Sam Asbury
and Mel Muller.
Congratulations also to Stefan Barut
for being shortlisted for his Food
& Technology folio. Unfortunately,
his folio did not make it through to
the final selection, but a wonderful
achievement just to get it shortlisted!
Congratulations also to his teacher
Gayle Turcato.
In other news, we have a new art work featured in the art area of the
school; a collaborative mural featuring stencil designs by a range
of students. Community art projects
such as this give students
the opportunity to participate,
learn together and express themselves
through art. The aim of the
piece was to celebrate diversity
throughout the school. Sharlene
Agnew from the Wellbeing Centre
and myself worked with students
throughout Term 4 to design and paint
their stencils. It was a great experience
for over 30 students from Years 7 to 10.
Students are already asking when we can
make another collaborative artwork!
All the best for a creative 2013!
Performing Arts..
Hi everyone and welcome to 2013.
World Tour is now approaching the
business end, with only a few short
weeks remaining until that first flight.
The 42 performers have been very
busy during the holidays getting the
show up to speed, chatting online
with their host families around the
world and finalising arrangements
for what is destined to be the trip of a lifetime.
Departing on March 2, the World Tour will be hosted by schools
in Detroit (USA), Toronto (Canada), both Newport and Sandwich
(UK), Harderwijk (The Netherlands), Bitche (France), Usti nad Orlici
(Czech Republic) and Chongqing (China). Spending about four
days at each location, the students will be immersed in a variety
of contrasting cultures whilst they are billeted with generous host
families.
Good Morning, Baltimore!
RINGWOOD SECONDARY
COLLEGE
2013
Last Friday saw the announcement of the College Production for
2013: Hairspray. This is another first for RSC and promises to be an
exciting adventure.
Auditions will be held in Week 3. All information on how to sign up
and prepare for an audition is available at
http://intranet.ringwoodsc.vic.edu.au/C15/PickupFolders/bmoody/
Forms/AllItems.aspx
While the cultural exchange is an important part of the experience,
the principal reason for the tour is performance and the Australians
will be presenting their self-devised theatrical piece, The Spirit
Of Melbourne, well over twenty times along the way. This show requires
the cast to be versatile – all students are required to sing,
dance, act and play instruments as they proudly present a lively,
fast-paced journey through the history and defining elements of
their home city.
Incorporating some well known and much loved Aussie tunes, the
show will illuminate the best of Melbourne – from its proud indigenous
heritage, through the discovery of gold, the rise of the “fairgo”
and the birth of the ANZAC spirit, right up to the multicultural
diversity and rich culture that its citizens enjoy so much today.
The World Premiere performance of The Spirit Of Melbourne will
be held at 7pm on Tuesday February 26 in the College Hall. Tickets
are available at the door for a $10 donation, which will contribute
towards a student experience on the tour.
We expect that there will be significant interest and encourage
everyone to do their best at the auditions – it will be a necessarily
competitive process. Cast positions are limited to 80, however there
are always opportunities to be involved in other areas of the show.
We are once again planning to run a Junior Production at the end
of 2013.
2012 ‘Sweet Charity’ DVD’s are now available!
Order forms are now available to order the 2012 Senior Production
of Sweet Charity DVD. The DVD’s are $15 each and forms are available
from the PAC or General Office.
This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in RSC’s great dance
program and represent the school at competitions and State School
Spectacular. We will have weekly lunchtime rehearsals and learn a
variety of dance routines including hip hop, contemporary and any
other styles you enjoy!
Melbourne University
Science Experience, 17 January 2013
By Christie Giang
It was the height of midsummer’s heat,
2013; attending the Science Experience at
Melbourne University meant waking up
as early as 6 for three days straight –just to
beat the traffic– during holidays that were
made for sleep-ins, and sure it was troubling,
but it was one of the most exciting
three days I ever had.
During the Science Experience, I learned
a few things that I’d heard or read about
before, but they expanded from what we
knew and presented it as if it were basic
knowledge and yet we were inspired—even though they had their
awkward technical difficulty moments.
On day one, we all gathered and ran through the day’s itinerary.
We began with the old get-to-know-you games, all being awkward
with our first time meetings, but it was an obstacle easily dodged.
The Sports Pages..
Welcome back to another big year in Ringwood sport. The year gets
under way with the annual Ringwood Secondary College Swimming
Sports, to be held at Croydon Memorial pool on Wednesday
the 13th of February.
All students from years 7-10 should have received a permission
form through their form groups meetings, and are encouraged to
return these as soon as possible in order to participate in the many
opportunities that Ringwood provides. They should have also received
an email copied of the form.
The Senior Summer sport round robin is also approaching fast, with
senior students competing in Cricket, Volleyball, Baseball, Softball
and Tennis on Friday the 22nd of February. Term 1 also includes
Summer round robins for Year 7, Year 8 and Intermediate students,
as well as the school cross country on Thursday 28th of March.
SWIMMING
Preparations are underway for the annual Ringwood Secondary
College Swimming Sports, which will be held on Wednesday the
13th of February at the Croydon Memorial Pool.
My favourite activity of the day was the Egg Drop.
At first I thought we were just going to watch eggs drop, until the
challenge—to create contraption to prevent Dumpty’s certain death.
Limited with the maximum of 20 straws and an arm’s length of tape,
we set out to make the “Egg’s Cradle”. What we ended up with was an
echidna-like design, straws wrapped around and sticking out from the
egg. In the end our egg cracked, but we won for the most intact egg…
Day two’s favourite was meeting with Professor Henry Atkinson –now
over a hundred years old– who still worked at the Melbourne Dental
Clinic. He’s the curator of the Melbourne Dental Museum, and I, being
a victim to braces, was naturally interested in the history behind the
technics that lay in my mouth.
Another favourite was the bridge making. Using toy construction kits,
we were assigned to make a bridge strong enough to withstand 10.5
kilos of chocolate, and of course, the winning group took home said
chocolate. After many cringes of watching bridges snap in half, results
obviously proved looks aren’t everything.
Finally, day three’s favourite activity was the quiz race. For each round
was a theme of which you had to run in. First round was zombie, limping
corpses and Thriller-ing it to obtain questions. Next was aquatic
animals, then cat walk and finally the tango. As many trips and falls we
had, our group still couldn’t get a title in the quiz, but it wasn’t all about
the winning, it was tripping over but still having fun about it.
To me, the purpose of the Experience was to promote science in youth
and spark interests, open eyes to a more enlightened world; a place
where you can be confident that they are other people with similar interests
as you out there.
Students in Years 7-10 are to arrive at the pool by 9.20am where an
attendance check will take place. If students cannot get to the pool,
they should go to the college as usual and attend form assembly
after which they will be transported to the pool by bus. Students
are reminded that as they will be outside that they should take the
usual precautions for the weather, including a hat, sunscreen, etc.
Normal school uniform is not needed and students are encouraged
to come dressed in their house colours.
From this carnival, successful students will be notified of their eligibility
to compete at the Maroondah Division Swimming Competition
to be held on Wednesday the 6th of March at Boroondara
Sports Complex, North Balwyn. Ringwood Secondary College has
a proud history of swimming ability, currently holding 20 consecutive
divisional championship trophies. We encourage all students
to participate and act responsibly on this day.
PLEASE NOTE: As is the case with a normal school day students will
not be permitted to be dismissed prior to the conclusion of the day
from the swimming carnival. If any student needs to leave to attend
a medical appointment etc. they must obtain an early leavers
pass from school before travelling to the athletics day. Under no
circumstances will notes from students be accepted on the day by
staff manning the gates. Thank you for your cooperation with this
matter.
SUMMER SPORT
Interschool competition in Cricket, Tennis, Baseball, Softball and
Volleyball will take place during this term with all year levels competing
with the other Maroondah Division schools.
The relevant dates are: Senior (11&12) – Friday 22nd February
Intermediate (9&10) – Thursday 14th March
Year 8 – Friday 22nd March
Year 7 – Wednesday 27th March
A reminder to parents and students that this year’s Work Experience
is from June 24th to June 28th, the last week of Term 2. Competition
for quality jobs is fierce and we strongly encourage all students
who have not commenced the process to decide on a type of job
and put together an application as soon as possible. “The early bird
catches the worm” and we would dearly love every student to secure
a position of employment by the end of Term 1. Contact Mrs Miriklis
or Mrs Allison if you have any queries. Students are reminded that
they also need to have completed the safe@work modules for Occupational
Health and Safety. Work placement is not possible without
these completed tests.
Nepal Training Walk and BBQ
Second Visit: Yr 7 - Girls & Boys HPV (2)
4/6/13 Yr 9 - Boys HPV (2)
Yr 10 - Girls & Boys – diphtheria, tetanus &
pertussis
Anticipation is building for the upcoming RSC Community trip to
Nepal next month! On Sunday 3rd of Feb, some of the people going
on the trip met up to go on a training walk through the Dandenong
Ranges National Park. Whilst Mt Dandenong only reaches a maximum
altitude of 633m, compared to the mountains of Nepal which
reach above the cloud line, it was a lovely opportunity to practise
walking hills and spend time getting to know everyone. Afterwards
we enjoyed a lovely BBQ lunch together.
Melissa Bennett
First Aid..
Welcome back from holidays and welcome to the new families that
have joined our school community. We hope that you have enjoyed
the break and are fit and healthy to start the new school year. Now
a bit of business:
If your child is sick and needs to come home they need to come to
sick bay/ first aid and we will contact you. This is so we can account
for each and every child and sometimes a rest is enough and your
child can continue for the rest of the day but if your child is too unwell
to stay we will contact you.
If your child has a headache or stomach pains and needs panadol
we require a permission slip to be signed from you to allow us to
give them this medication.
Immunisation.
In accordance with Department of Health guideline, Maroondah
City Council’s Immunisation team will be visiting the school to provide
immunisations to students in years 7,9 and 10.
There has been changes made to the Secondary School Immunisation
Program that start this year that you may not be aware of, so
we thought we would notify you of these changes.
1: The hepatitis B vaccine program ends in 2013. Most children entering
Year 7 in 2013 will have had the course of hepatitis B vaccine
as an infant. If you feel your child still needs this vaccine you can
contact the local council or get it at your local doctor.
2: An ongoing human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program will
WHAT IS BULLYING AND UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR?
Building Respectful and Safe Schools supports schools to prevent
and respond to bullying and all forms of unacceptable behaviour
including harassment, discrimination or violence. The definitions
below are adapted from Bullying. No Way!3, the joint Australian Education
Authorities website, developed by Australia’s educational
communities including the Victorian Department of Education and
Early Childhood Development.
Bullying
Bullying is when someone, or a group of people, deliberately upset
or hurt another person or damage their property, reputation or social
acceptance on more than one occasion. There is an imbalance
of power in incidents of bullying with the bully or bullies having
more power at the time due to age, size, status or other reasons.
Bullying may occur because of perceived differences such as culture,
ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability or disability, religion,
body size and physical appearance, age or economic status.
Bullying may be motivated by jealousy, distrust, fear, misunderstanding
or lack of knowledge. It can continue over time, is often
hidden from adults and will probably continue if no action is taken.
out behind the bullied person’s back. It is designed to harm someone’s
social reputation and/or cause humiliation. Indirect bullying
includes:
• lying and spreading rumours
• playing nasty jokes to embarrass and humiliate
• mimicking
• encouraging others to socially exclude someone
• damaging someone’s social reputation or social acceptance.
Cyberbullying: is direct verbal or indirect bullying behaviours using
digital technologies. This includes harassment via a mobile phone,
setting up a defamatory personal website or deliberately excluding
someone from social networking spaces.
Access at Bullying. No Way! at http://www.bullyingnoway.com.au
Building Respectful and Safe Schools
What bullying is not
Many distressing behaviours are not examples of bullying even
though they are unpleasant and often require teacher intervention
and management.
Mutual conflict involves an argument or disagreement between
people but not an imbalance of power. Both parties are upset and
usually both want a resolution. Unresolved mutual conflict can develop
into bullying if one of the parties targets the other repeatedly
in retaliation.
Social rejection or dislike is not bullying unless it involves deliberate
and repeated attempts to cause distress, exclude or create dislike
by others.
Single-episode acts of nastiness or physical aggression are not the
same as bullying. If someone is verbally abused or pushed on one
occasion they are not being bullied. Nastiness or physical aggression
that is directed towards many different people is not the same
as bullying. However, this does not mean that single episodes of
nastiness or physical aggression should be ignored or condoned as
these are unacceptable behaviours.
Types of bullying
There are four broad types of bullying:
Direct physical bullying: includes hitting, kicking, tripping, pinching
and pushing or damaging property.
Direct verbal bullying: includes name calling, insults, teasing, intimidation,
homophobic or racist remarks, or verbal abuse.
Indirect bullying: is often harder to recognise and can be carried
