Are you a new family at RSC, or would like to be more involved in the school community, get to know other parents and gain some insight into how the school works? We would love to welcome you to the PCTA, Parents, Citizens, Teachers Association. We are a small, friendly and very productive committee who work together to organise the following annual school events for staff and students: * The Debutante ball in term 1 * A thank you morning tea for staff during Education Week * Year 7 & 8 walkathon in term 3 * Assist the Ladies Auxiliary with the second hand clothing/book sale in term 4 The funds raised from the Deb ball and the walkathon go back to the school to contribute to facilities for students such as outdoor seating, soccer field, ‘The Hub’ and various other projects. The PCTA meet once a term on a Tuesday evening, and welcome you to our next meeting on Tuesday 30 April at 7.30pm. Your participation, no matter how small or large, is very much appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact Anna Frith email fritha@unimelb.edu.au The Sports Pages .. SWIMMING SPORTS The annual Ringwood Secondary College Swimming Carnival was a great day, at a new venue this year, Croydon Memorial Pool. A fantastic turn out of students, on what was a beautiful 30 degree day, added to the Carnival atmosphere with Mr Kent and Mr McKay leading the music over the loud speakers and the smaller pool filled with students throughout the day. The performance of our new Year 7 students was particularly exciting and we look forward to seeing many of them in action at the Division Carnival. Bouncing back from third place last year in the house competition, Karralla House (Yellow) triumphed on 413 points, seeing off last years winner Woorkarrim (Blue) on 366 points. In third place was Noorook House (Red), who finished 27 points adrift on 339. The final events featured some fiercely contested relays involving Year 7 and 8 students, as well as the staff-student relay. In a big upset, the two staff teams were comprehensively defeated for the first time in a decade, resulting in many staff members leaving the pool with their heads down. However, the legitimacy of the students victory has been called into question, with two students swimming multiple legs of the relay. We look forward to the rematch in 2014. Winners of events on the day were Sophie Caldwell, Khy Blizzard (7), Tristan Blizzard (5), Lee Fletcher (4), Alice Matanisiga, Sinead Lumsden, Georgina Button (3), Renae Kopek, Jacqueline Smart (2), Emma George, Jayden Cichowski, Lauren Flanagan, Cooper Fraser, Harrison Leigh, Abby Couper, Cameron Shield, Luke Percy, Isaac Parlas (1) Our Age Group champions were: Girls Boys 13 Years Sophie Caldwell Lee Fletcher 14 Years Alice Matanisiga Cooper Fraser 15 Years Sinead Lumsden Khy Blizzard 16 Years Jacqueline Smart Tristan Blizzard 17 Years - Cameron Shield 18-20 Years Georgina Button Luke Percy Page 6

Newsletter Number 2 March 01, 20123 Many of our swimmers and divers will now represent Ringwood at the Maroondah Division championships on Wednesday March 6th at the Booroondara Sports Complex in Balwyn, where our team will be aiming to win its 21st successive swimming championship. Parents are most welcome to attend the Disivion swimming day to support the team. A big thank you to the students for their enthusiasm and participation throughout the day and to the staff who worked tirelessly in the many jobs required to make the day such a successful one. SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY – 28TH MARCH In conjunction with the school cross country on the 28th March this term we will be holding an adidas School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year for Year 7 and 8 students. All money raised will go towards the installation of water drinking fountains on the oval. These should be a great addition to an area of the school used by all students. The adidas School Fun-Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser that ensures we send the right message to our students about getting active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The main focus of this event is on participation. Family support is most appreciated as we encourage all students to get involved. In the coming week all Year 7 and 8 students will receive a Sponsorship Form to help collect sponsorship on behalf of the school. Any older student who wishes to raise funds should see Mr Simkin or Mr Craig for a sponsorship form. We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship Form and sign the front page to grant permission for their child to fundraise and participate in this event. Students who raise just $10 or more will receive a reward for effort. First Aid .. IMMUNISATIONS: In accordance with Department of Health guideline, Maroondah City Council’s Immunisation team will be visiting the school to provide immunisations to students in years 7, 9 and 10. There has been changes made to the Secondary School Immunisation Program that start this year that you may not be aware of, so we thought we would notify you of these changes. 1: The hepatitis B vaccine program ends in 2013. Most children entering Year 7 in 2013 will have had the course of hepatitis B vaccine as an infant. If you feel your child still needs this vaccine you can contact the local council or get it at your local doctor. 2: An ongoing human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program will now include the boys as well in 2013. This will mean that both boys and girls in Year 7 will benefit from the Gardasil vaccine. Year 9 school boys will be targeted for a catch-up Gardasil vaccine program for two years only. This two year time-limited school based program occurs in 2013 and 2014. More information on this will be sent home soon. Chicken Pox will still be offered in Year 7 and diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis will still be offered to the Year 10 students. This is the schedule detailed below: Term One First Visit 12th March 2012 Year 7 HPV (1st dose) & Chicken Pox Year 9 Boys HPV (1st dose) – boys only Term Two Second Visit 4th June 2012 Year 7 HPV (2nd dose) Year 9 Boys HPV (2nd dose) – boys only Year 10 Diphtheria Tetanus & Pertussis (Boostrix) Term Four Third Visit 15th October 2012 Year 7 HPV (3rd dose) Year 9 Boys HPV (3rd dose) – boys only Students wanting to train for our event and to receive advice from sporting heroes like Scott Prince, Dale Thomas, Sally Pearson and other elite adidas athletes can do so by logging onto schoolfunrun. com.au/students and clicking create a profile.
