Heritage ..
The Ringwood Secondary College is one of a very few Secondary
Colleges in Victoria that can claim to have a substantial Archives
that contains materials reflecting the history of our College from
its commencement as a High School in 1954 right through to
2012.
The material stored in our Archives includes a complete collection
of School Magazines, Production Programs and memorabilia,
dated newspaper cuttings of events reported in the local press
and records and programs of special events including Speech
Night Programs, Debutante Ball Presentation, Tours, Valedictory
Dinner Programs and much more.
In 1992 devastating fires destroyed most of the school’s records
leaving very little tangible evidence of our past; however in 2004
the School Council appointed an Archivist and the Heritage Group
set out on a project to rebuild the lost records. Commencing with
just 16 original photographs (that were off-site at the time of the
fire) we now have a collection of more than 1000 recovered and
digitized class photographs and many other photos that record
Page 4
the progress of our College through the years.
Although a great deal of work has already been done there are
still many gaps in the old records that require filling. At the same
time there is a need to maintain the flow of current material into
the Archives to ensure that it can be recorded and preserved to
demonstrate the voyage of our College over the years for future
generations.
Parents, grandparents, teachers or students (past and present)
who have any historical material (old photographs, student tours,
special projects, etc.) they would like to donate to the Archives
please contact the College Administration who can put you in
touch with our Archivist who basically works off-site.
Our Year 7 “Transition Program”
has now commenced
with a range of activities taking
place over the past two
weeks.
Archivist and Convener of Heritage Group
Our “Supportive Friends”
(trained students from Year
11) have organised and run
a session involving a range
of activities engaging all year 7 students. It was a great pleasure
watching the students taking part in these activities. The supportive
friends will continue to run
activities throughout the remainder
of term one and into
term two.
On Monday 18th 7A – E attended
the Study Skills and
Well Being day and on Tuesday
the 19th February 7F-I .
Students travelled by coach
to the Heathmont Baptist church to complete three sessions, Anti
Bullying, Friendships and Study Skills and Cyber Safety. Students
looked at planning a homework timetable around all their weekly
commitments and using various aspects of the internet with
safely. They actively took part in the
friendship session making many new
friends before the day was over. Students
at the Monday workshops are to
be commended for their drive to keep
working under extreme heat conditions.
On behalf of all Year 7 students
the Community Coordinators would
like to thank the large team of staff who made these days possible.
Without their support these activities would not have been run.
Their time and effort is much appreciated.
Our next big Transition Activity is on Friday 1st March. Students
will travel by bus to Adventure Park, Geelong. Students will depart
school at 9.00am and return at 4.00 pm. Please note the late return.
Students may bring lunch or purchase it from the park. Swimwear
and sun tan lotion are required to enjoy the activities with new
friends and/or old friends from primary school.
