PREFECTS INDUCTION 2013
Last week I had the pleasure of inducting our 2013 Prefects. This
important tradition highlights the significance of the role of our
student leaders and especially the key role our Year 12 students
play in the daily life of our college.
It was particularly inspiring to hear from Mark Bolton who was
himself a student at Ringwood in the mid 90’s. In his role as CEO
of Ladder an organisation that constructs housing for homeless
youth, Mark highlighted many important leadership qualities
and in particular the importance of service to others.
As a result of Marks input, we hope to utilise some of the opportunities
to develop a more comprehensive approach to Youth in
Philanthropy initiatives throughout the College.
UPCOMING COMMUNICATION
In the coming fortnight we will be contacting all families to advise
you of the introduction of an internet portal called Compass
School Manager.
The letter will explain how you will be able to access information
on attendance and student reports, book conferences with teachers,
provide permissions and payments for excursions and activities
and keep up to date with news relevant to your child(ren).
Each family will receive a letter via Australia Post on Thursday
March 14 or Friday March 15 confirming a username and password.
Access will be by selecting the Compass icon on the Ringwood
Secondary College website.
In keeping with the sense of occasion and the importance of forging
relationships, the College held its Prefect Induction Ceremony
on Thursday the 21st of February where 23 of our elected prefects
were inducted in the time honoured Prefects’ Book. Our guest
speaker, Mr Mark Bolton, himself a prefect of the College in 1996,
spoke of the importance of decisions, having a go and committing
to decisions. The importance of a ceremony of this nature can never
be overlooked in building year level cohesion and unity. A huge
thanks and congratulations to all the Year 7 cohort for being such a
wonderful audience.
Once again, the Dr Michael Carr-Gregg evening was well attended
by parents and students – his pragmatic advice and lifestyle tips on
getting the best out the VCE was well received.
MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
The past two weeks have seen students settling into the routines
of their year level and making a terrific effort to improve their work
habits.
Work habits such as coming to class and submitting work on time
are crucial in maximising student outcomes. We encourage students
to maintain a high level of engagement with their learning
and to ask for assistance when they experience challenges.
Best wishes to all students representing the school on the World
Tour, leaving this weekend. I am sure you will all be great representatives
of your school and community.
From Mr Barut ..
SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS
BUSY, BUSY, BUSY.
Michael Phillips
Principal
The life of a VCE student is a continuum of SACs, homework,
study, preparation and commitment.
The College supports our students by offering them counselling,
mentoring and spaces to study and revise. Students have access
to the Senior Study Centre until at least 5.00pm every night! What
a fantastic opportunity for our current cohort to stay back after
classes at the end of the day and revise what they have learnt and
prepare for the next day’s classes.
On that note the MEC study day was an immensely successful day
where all our Year 12 students were taken through different workshops
on the best way to ‘study’…..an inherently difficult concept!
Workshops included Student Elevation, Time Management and
Study Sensei. Further, the Chief Assessor of the English study,
Mr Bob Hillman, provided a valuable insight on what constitutes
success in the VCE English examination. Students from all schools
were attentive to all the presenters and respectful of the occasion….even
new friendships were forged. The attending teachers
spoke highly of the exemplary behaviour and attitude. It was a
pleasure for all to attend.
UNIFORM
We would ask for parental support in uniform matters. Students at
this stage of the year are to wear their summer uniform.
Please note that Ringwood Secondary College does not accept
students wearing facial piercings. Thank you to parents for their
vigilance in this matter.
We encourage Middle School students to take on leadership opportunities
offered to them.
The Year 10 Common period, in particular, has been a terrific way
for students to discover what’s on offer. Best wishes to everyone
who applies for positions of leadership.
Heritage ..
The Ringwood Secondary College is one of a very few Secondary
Colleges in Victoria that can claim to have a substantial Archives
that contains materials reflecting the history of our College from
its commencement as a High School in 1954 right through to
2012.
The material stored in our Archives includes a complete collection
of School Magazines, Production Programs and memorabilia,
dated newspaper cuttings of events reported in the local press
and records and programs of special events including Speech
Night Programs, Debutante Ball Presentation, Tours, Valedictory
Dinner Programs and much more.
In 1992 devastating fires destroyed most of the school’s records
leaving very little tangible evidence of our past; however in 2004
the School Council appointed an Archivist and the Heritage Group
set out on a project to rebuild the lost records. Commencing with
just 16 original photographs (that were off-site at the time of the
fire) we now have a collection of more than 1000 recovered and
digitized class photographs and many other photos that record
Page 4
the progress of our College through the years.
Although a great deal of work has already been done there are
still many gaps in the old records that require filling. At the same
time there is a need to maintain the flow of current material into
the Archives to ensure that it can be recorded and preserved to
demonstrate the voyage of our College over the years for future
generations.
Parents, grandparents, teachers or students (past and present)
who have any historical material (old photographs, student tours,
special projects, etc.) they would like to donate to the Archives
please contact the College Administration who can put you in
touch with our Archivist who basically works off-site.
Junior School News ..
Our Year 7 “Transition Program”
has now commenced
with a range of activities taking
place over the past two
weeks.
Terry Kane
Archivist and Convener of Heritage Group
Our “Supportive Friends”
(trained students from Year
11) have organised and run
a session involving a range
of activities engaging all year 7 students. It was a great pleasure
watching the students taking part in these activities. The supportive
friends will continue to run
activities throughout the remainder
of term one and into
term two.
On Monday 18th 7A – E attended
the Study Skills and
Well Being day and on Tuesday
the 19th February 7F-I .
Students travelled by coach
to the Heathmont Baptist church to complete three sessions, Anti
Bullying, Friendships and Study Skills and Cyber Safety. Students
looked at planning a homework timetable around all their weekly
commitments and using various aspects of the internet with
safely. They actively took part in the
friendship session making many new
friends before the day was over. Students
at the Monday workshops are to
be commended for their drive to keep
working under extreme heat conditions.
On behalf of all Year 7 students
the Community Coordinators would
like to thank the large team of staff who made these days possible.
Without their support these activities would not have been run.
Their time and effort is much appreciated.
Our next big Transition Activity is on Friday 1st March. Students
will travel by bus to Adventure Park, Geelong. Students will depart
school at 9.00am and return at 4.00 pm. Please note the late return.
Students may bring lunch or purchase it from the park. Swimwear
and sun tan lotion are required to enjoy the activities with new
friends and/or old friends from primary school.

PAYMENTS (SEMESTER 1)
If your son/daughter is studying Food & Technology this semester,
a compulsory payment is required to cover the cost of food purchased
for your child’s classes. This food is either consumed at
school or brought home to share with your family.
Please ask your son/daughter for the payment notice which have
been distributed to all students this week. The notices have also
been emailed to parents/guardians.
Middle School ..
It has been a fabulous beginning to the year in the Middle School.
The Year 9 students have settled into the Challe9e Program and are
super excited to utilize their new laptops in a number of educational
ways. There will be a great many changes that the students will
adapt to, particularly relating to InterGREAT, however, their dedicated
and passionate teachers will work closely with them to ensure
they work to their maximum abilities.
The Year 10 Common Sessions, held Monday, Week 2, have introduced
the students to the activities and programs they will be involved
in this year. This time with the year level has, thus far, proven
to be a GREAT initiative that brings the students together with their
Community Heads as well as fantastic guest speakers.
Music ..
Welcome to all those Year 7’s
who joined the music program
on a very hot and steamy evening
last Monday.
For those students and parents
who could not make it, there are
still a few places available in the
program. Please pick up a recruitment
package from the PAC office as soon as possible. This invite
is also extended to those interested students
in years 8 to 11.
Also a reminder to those that have
joined the program, that there are second
hand instruments for sale. Please
check the notice board in the PAC foyer.
Music jackets are available for purchase.
Sample jackets are available in the PAC
office to try on recess and lunch Monday,
Tuesday and Thursday. From 2013
onwards the music jacket is part of the performance uniform for all
music students.
side of a hill to fall hundreds of
metres below. We will also be
paying for, and helping with
the rendering of the walls of the
school classrooms. The rendering
will help to keep the cold
weather and wind from penetrating
the classrooms particularly
on snowy wintery days.
Everyone is counting down the days until we leave for this amazing
trip. Currently we have 37 participants of which 16 are students and
the rest are made up parents, ex-students and staff from R.S.C.
RSC PCTA – New Members ..
Are you a new family at RSC, or would like to be more involved in
the school community, get to know other parents and gain some
insight into how the school works?
We would love to welcome you to the PCTA, Parents, Citizens,
Teachers Association.
We are a small, friendly and very productive committee who work
together to organise the following annual school events for staff
and students:
* A thank you morning tea for staff during Education Week
* Year 7 & 8 walkathon in term 3
* Assist the Ladies Auxiliary with the second hand clothing/book
sale in term 4
The funds raised from the Deb ball and the walkathon go back to
the school to contribute to facilities for students such as outdoor
SWIMMING SPORTS
The annual Ringwood Secondary
College Swimming Carnival
was a great day, at a new venue
this year, Croydon Memorial
Pool. A fantastic turn out of students,
on what was a beautiful
30 degree day, added to the
Carnival atmosphere with Mr
Kent and Mr McKay leading the
music over the loud speakers
and the smaller pool filled with students throughout the day. The
performance of our new Year 7 students was particularly exciting
and we look forward to seeing many of them in action at the Division
Carnival.
Bouncing back from third place last year in the house competition,
Karralla House (Yellow) triumphed on 413 points, seeing off last
years winner Woorkarrim (Blue) on 366 points. In third place was
Noorook House (Red), who finished 27 points adrift on 339.
The final events featured some fiercely contested relays involving
Year 7 and 8 students, as well as
the staff-student relay. In a big
upset, the two staff teams were
comprehensively defeated for
the first time in a decade, resulting
in many staff members leaving
the pool with their heads
down. However, the legitimacy
of the students victory has been
called into question, with two
students swimming multiple legs of the relay. We look forward to
the rematch in 2014.
Winners of events on the day were Sophie Caldwell, Khy Blizzard
Many of our swimmers and divers will now represent Ringwood at
the Maroondah Division championships on Wednesday March 6th
at the Booroondara Sports Complex in Balwyn, where our team
will be aiming to win its 21st successive swimming championship.
Parents are most welcome to attend the Disivion swimming day to
support the team.
A big thank you to the students
for their enthusiasm and participation
make the day such a successful
one.
SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY – 28TH MARCH
In conjunction with the school cross country on the 28th March this
term we will be holding an adidas School Fun-Run as a major fundraising
event this year for Year 7 and 8 students. All money raised will go
towards the installation of water drinking fountains on the oval. These
should be a great addition to an area of the school used by all students.
The adidas School Fun-Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser
that ensures we send the right message to our students about getting
active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The main
focus of this event is on participation. Family support is most appreciated
as we encourage all students to get involved.
In the coming week all Year 7 and 8 students will receive a Sponsorship
Form to help collect sponsorship on behalf of the school. Any
older student who wishes to raise funds should see Mr Simkin or Mr
Craig for a sponsorship form.
We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship Form and sign the front
page to grant permission for their child to fundraise and participate
in this event. Students who raise just $10 or more will receive a
reward for effort.
IMMUNISATIONS:
In accordance with Department of Health guideline, Maroondah City Council’s
Immunisation team will be visiting the school to provide immunisations
to students in years 7, 9 and 10.
There has been changes made to the Secondary School Immunisation Program
that start this year that you may not be aware of, so we thought we
would notify you of these changes.
1: The hepatitis B vaccine program ends in 2013. Most children entering Year
7 in 2013 will have had the course of hepatitis B vaccine as an infant. If you
feel your child still needs this vaccine you can contact the local council or
get it at your local doctor.
2: An ongoing human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program will now include
the boys as well in 2013. This will mean that both boys and girls in Year
7 will benefit from the Gardasil vaccine.
Year 9 school boys will be targeted for a catch-up Gardasil vaccine program
for two years only. This two year time-limited school based program occurs
in 2013 and 2014. More information on this will be sent home soon.
Chicken Pox will still be offered in Year 7 and diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis
will still be offered to the Year 10 students.
Careers ..
YEAR 12
Interviews are underway and hopefully this process will be completed
by the first few weeks of Term 2. Most students have spent
valuable time planning their career pathway for 2014. In upcoming
Common periods, guest speakers from several tertiary institutions
will visit the college and in the last week of Term 2 all students will
attend the TIS (Tertiary Information Session) at Deakin University,
where they will view an expo as well as listen to a range of guest
speakers about the VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre)
process for applications for University or TAFE for 2014.
YEAR 10
Work Experience 2013
Another reminder to parents and students that this year’s Work
Experience is from June 24th –June 28th, the last week of Term 2.
Competition for quality jobs is fierce and we strongly encourage
all students who have not commenced the process to decide on a
type of job and put together an application.
All contracts (paperwork) must be submitted as soon as possible
and this year all formal placement applications will close in May.
Contact Mrs Miriklis if you have any queries.
MIP’s Interviews
Interviews of Year 10 students have commenced and each student
will have a career pathway plan mapped out by the middle of Term
2. In career focussed common periods students will be exposed to
ideas and information that will equip them to make sound choices
for their VCE/VCAL studies for 2014.
Year 7 Art Outstanding
Achievements ..
Year 7 art students have been learning how to use line and tone
expressively to make their artworks more emotional. These two students,
Erin Fisken and Matilda Miles, have used the scribble technique
to create a soft drawing and the cross hatching technique
to make their work more aggressive. Congratulations to both Erin
and Matilda.
