Principal’s
Post..
During the past fortnight, we celebrated Education Week and many
events have recognized the outstanding efforts and achievements
of individuals and groups of staff and students, across our range
of programs. The atmosphere was indeed exciting and reflective of
the “buzz” that exists in our college community.
Learning Walks at Ringwood Secondary College
Often our college is called upon to share some of our programs and
practices both nationally and internationally. Last week we have
hosted visitors from the United States and India.
Mr John Couch, Vice President for Education from Apple and Mr
Gordon Shukwit Education Manager for Apple in the USA, visited
a number of Year 7 & 8 classes to experience some of the ways in
which students were using iPads for Learning.
Ms Sona Seth and Ms Ambuj Sharma both Principals of very
large and successful secondary schools in India, also spent a few
hours with us reflecting on similarities and differences between
our schools and systems. They were particularly interested in our
curriculum and co-curricular programs.
I would like to thank all staff and students for their wonderful
support of these visits.
Excursion Consent and Payments through Compass
This week we have introduced a new option for consent and
payment on-line for school events, excursions and competitions.
This is enabled through the Parent Portal on Compass.
As new events are planned we will be providing the online option
for parents. By using this system parents are able to provide online
consent and payment and provides some significant advantages.
* Parents can provide up to date medical information for each
consent which goes to the organizing teacher
* The online consent has equal legality to a signed consent form
Page 2

Newsletter Number 6 May 31, 2013
* Organising teachers and office staff have immediate data on
payments
* Convenience for parents after hours
* Minimising the money or bank details being brought to school
by students
A one page instruction sheet on how to provide consent and
payment is attached (See page 10)
Bookings for Hairspray The Musical
Year 10 and 11 Exams
As we move towards the end of semester one, many of our
senior students will complete exams next week. Year 10 and 11
examinations are undertaken to establish levels of student
performance over the whole semester’s work including knowledge,
skills and understanding. They all serve as a means of facilitating
preparation for future statewide examinations in VCE.
Semester 1 Reports
Teachers have commenced writing Semester One reports. It is most
important that students have completed all work and submitted it
for assessment by the due dates. Please ensure your child maintains
a regular study routine during this busy time of the year.
For the first time, Year 7-12 reports will be published online through
Compass and will be available from 3.00 pm on Friday, 28 June.
Following distribution of the reports, Parent/Teacher/Student
Interviews will take place in Term 3 on Wednesday, 21 August
between 12.00 – 8.00 pm. Appointments may be made through
Compass and parents will be advised when the bookings are open.
Whilst there are no scheduled classes on this day, students are
encouraged to attend interviews with their parent/s.
AusVELS
As part of the Semester Report, students in Years 7-10 will be
assessed against the AusVELS for the first time with a changed
structure being used to record student achievement. Please see the
information sheet introducing AusVELS in this newsletter.
From Mr Barut ..
SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS
The GAT and exams….
For the first time this year, VCAA has made the decision not to hold
midyear exams for several subjects. The merit of this decision is
not to be debated here, suffice to say that the VCAA still holds the
GAT for every VCE student doing a Unit 3/4 VCE or VET study.
The GAT is an acronym for GENERAL ACHIEVEMENT TEST and its
purpose is to test the knowledge and skills that have been taught
to our VCE cohort over the best part of thirteen years of schooling.
The test requires that students complete two written responses
and complete 70 multiple choice questions. Every student will
receive their GAT score on their printed results that will be mailed
to them at the end of year.
Safety to and from school
Students must exercise vigilance and sensible behaviour when
they are coming to school and on the way home, particularly in
regards to crossings and the train tracks.
Exams
The Year 9s will be studying for their Maths tests while the Year 10s
will experience exams in key subject areas. All information for the
exams has been communicated to students who are encouraged
to study effectively and do their best during this time.
Bully Bust/Safety Surveys
These surveys are being conducted in order to ensure the safety of
all students.
Compass
We enourage parents to log onto Compass for information and
updates of their children’s progress.
Further details can be accessed by visiting the VCAA website.
On a different note, the College’s Compass system has allowed
parents to log onto their son/daughter’s portal and gather
valuable information on attendance, work ethic, work that has
been excellent and, on a sadder note, work that is overdue. The
work needs to be completed as soon as possible and we ask for
parents to support us in making sure that all overdue tasks are
completed promptly. Please feel free to communicate any queries
you might have directly to the classroom teacher.
Important dates: Week 8: Monday 3rd June – Friday 7th June. Year
11 exams.
Week 9: Monday 10th – Queen’s Birthday holiday
Tuesday 11th – Normal classes for Year 11 and 12
Wednesday 12th – GAT 10am to 1.15pm
Thursday 13th – Normal classes
Friday 14th – Report writing day. No classes
JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS
Mrs. E. Stathatos
Assistant Principal
We are fast approaching the business end of semester one, an
important time for all students to continue to focus on
completing all tasks to the highest-level possible. With
reporting currently underway, it is vital that any missed or
incomplete work is submitted for assessment as soon as
possible. Parents are encouraged to access Compass to check
progress of their son or daughter. Mid-year Reports will be
available, via Compass on the last day of Term 2.
NAPLAN
Congratulations to all students on their performance and
dedicated approach during the NAPLAN tests held last week.
Thank you to all staff that supervised the tests especially Julie
Yelland and Simone Hobbs who managed the whole process.
Homework Tutor Group
• Traffic Management
If your son or daughter needs a tutor in a subject why not join the
homework tutor group. Senior students tutor the junior students
in a range of subjects, in a warm and caring environment with
Ringwood Secondary College staff supervising the sessions at all
times. Contact Ms Virginia Martin for costs and other information.
Bully Bust
All students in Years 7 and 8 have recently participated in a
Bully Bust in which students had an opportunity to name
bullies as well as name their supportive friends. As a College, we
work very hard to stamp out bullying and aim to build a harmonious
learning environment for each and every student.
With the midyear holidays not far off, the remainder of Term 2
will be a very busy and productive time. Parents, please utilize
Compass to communicate with teachers about performance,
excursions and use this to monitor your child’s attendance.
Facilities..
Mrs. M. Allison
Assistant Principal
Some important reminders:
- Drop children off some distance from the College if it is safe to do
so. This reduces the volume of traffic around the school boundaries
- Insist your child uses the traffic lights if crossing Bedford Rd. The
lights are safer than the isle near the railway line which becomes
overcrowded
- Warn your child of the dangers of walking/riding to school
listening to music. All senses are required for maximum safety
when travelling
- Insist bike riders wear helmets
- Children getting off the bus at the top of Great Ryrie St should
walk some distance down Great Ryrie before crossing. Do not cross
this street near the intersection with Bedford Rd.
- Students should not under any circumstances travel to or from
school through the Ringwood Lake area
- Students should not under any circumstances talk to unknown
persons in cars
- Parents should not park in illegal areas at any time. This includes
much of the front of the school and private driveways
- Parents should not enter the car park at the front of the school to
pick students up, except for emergencies
Mr C. Salisbury
Facilities Manager
School Council Report..
The School Council meeting on the 22nd of May welcomed two
new members for the first time: Charles Heathcote and Greg Jacobs.
• Hub BBQ-Design Competition
A particular highlight over the
next few weeks will be the
design competition for the Hub
BBQ plaque. All students will
be provided with the
opportunity to design a
mosaic or emblem that will
adorn the Hub BBQ. The
beautiful stone work was
recently completed and in a few weeks the gas BBQs will be
installed. Hopefully the first snag will be available towards the end
of term. Enjoy the photos.
• Painting
The middle school foyer has had a fresh coat of paint and looks
terrific. Similarly, the windows at the back of Science have been
sanded, undercoated and painted.
• Trip Hazards
Over the next few weeks, a handful of trip hazards will be
eliminated to improve the safety of the college. Please let
Mr Salisbury know of areas you note as dangerous.
Council reviewed the RTTF Steering Committee’s report, and heard
that they are now looking to link with local Government in order
to offer even more opportunities to the students there. There is a
pressing and on-going issue of recurrent funding for the cleaning
and maintenance of the RTTF building, which council is still waiting
for the DEECD to follow up on, and look forward to resolving the
issue in the near future.
RSC’s Annual Implementation Plan showed council a snapshot of
how the school is meeting the goals that were set 2 years ago as
we work towards 2014. The annual report showed that RSC again
performed consistently well compared to other like schools. These
reports measure indicators of Student Learning, Student
Engagement and Wellbeing and Student Pathways and
Transitions.
Heritage and Alumni Group is tracking towards the 60th
Anniversary celebrations in 2014, and have begun to formalise
how items are to be archived in the future. If anyone has items
they think may be of interest to the Heritage and Alumni group, or
has contact with past students, please contact the General Office.
The council heard that there are currently reviews being
conducted for the Year 7-8 iPad program, and for the College
uniform, and results will be released later this year.
Studio Art..
YEAR 12 STUDIO ARTS EXCURSION
• Some classes in years 7, 8 & 9 feasting on crêpes and hot
chocolate, and croissants in class.
On Friday the 16th of May our Year 12 Studio Art class went on an
excursion to see the Top Arts exhibition at the National Gallery of
Victoria, Federation Square. Students also enjoyed a gallery talk
with a focus on one of the artists they are studying this year; Charles
Blackman. Students looked at one of Blackman’s paintings from the
Alice series and learnt more about Blackman’s art processes when
making this work.
Students attended a range of exhibitions on the day including
private galleries such as Flinders Lane Gallery and also
public art spaces such as the graffiti lane ways supported by City
of Melbourne. Students also visited the NGV International to see
the ‘Contemporary Asian and Pacific Art’ exhibition and the ‘Ballet
and Fashion’ Exhibition. It was a great day out and all students
learnt valuable information about exhibition design which will be
required in the Unit 4 Studio Art Examination.
• Other students watched La Petite Sirene, The Little Mermaid, over
lunchtime, with popcorn provided.
• Morgane Lebon, year 10 student, entertained 7C with a
powerpoint presentation on Mauritius, highlighting the benefits
of speaking another language, performing the traditional dance,
Le Sega and teaching the class the dance, and singing the Edith Piaf
hit, Je ne regrette rien. Merci Morgane, you were a highlight!
• Teachers joined in by speaking a language other than English, for
the introduction of their classes. This was received very well by the
audiences.
• French music played over the Public Address system.
It has been a hectic but fun week at RSC and I thank all staff and
students who joined in supporting the spirit and importance of
Languages, in Education Week.
We hope that everyone has enjoyed a lovely time during Education
Week.
Rosie Devereux
LOTE Convener
EAL focussing on the importance of speaking another language
in Education Week
The Year 8 EAL class opened up to many classes on the
importance of speaking another language this week. They
introduced themselves and explained the benefits of languages
in their own language, then gave the translation to the class. At
the end of their presentation, they taught classes a few words in
their own language by writing them on the board and asking the
class to repeat each word after them. This activity generated much
discussion in classes.
The students also addressed other groups around the school - the
office staff, Mr Phillips and overseas visitors to the school.
LOTE: Education Week..
As part of Education Week, the French department ran a number of
activities, highlighting the importance of languages in our global
society. Some activities included:
Page 6
All in all, this task not only helped to shed light on the importance
of languages, but it also showed the College community that we
have many students who speak English as a second, or another,
language at home. The students are to be congratulated on their
brilliant presentations.
First Aid..
From the School Nurses
It is that time of the year where coughs and colds are becoming rife.
Here are a few helpful tips to avoid getting sick.
• Wash your hands often. You do not know who last handled your
money or who last turned a door handle!
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. If you blow your nose,
wash your hands before touching your mouth or eyes. If you cough,
wash your hands before touching your eyes or nose. If you need to
rub your eyes wash your hands first. The key here is that you CAN
give a cold back to yourself.
• Use tissues and dispose of them immediately into a rubbish bin.
• Vitamin C can help strengthen your immune system.
• Limit contact with people who are sick. If you don’t want a cold,
don’t intentionally expose yourself to people who have a cold.
• Eat healthy, energizing food.
• DRINK WATER! Your body naturally needs 8 glasses a day. When
you are sick treat this as a BARE minimum that you must drink,
preferably more. An efficient body can fight off disease better.
• Stay warm and dry. If you get cold and wet in the rain or
swimming dry off promptly. The combination of cold and wet can
use energy (while your body tries to warm itself) and this energy
may have been all that was keeping that cold virus from defeating
your immune system.
• Having the Flu immunisation does help – speak to your doctor
about this.
Reminder that Yr 7, Yr 9 boys and Yr 10 have Immunisations on
Tuesday 4th June 2013.
All cards should have been returned to the school already but we
are missing some Yr 10 cards so please return immediately if you
have not done so already! The Yr 7 students will receive HPV (2nd
dose), Yr 9 boys will receive HPV (2nd dose) and all Yr 10 students
will receive Diphtheria Tetanus & Pertussis (Boostrix).
Mental Health Week Celebrations
Karen Carden
A fun filled 3 day event allowing Ringwood Secondary College
students and staff to involve themselves in a range of activities
and events during lunchtimes. Ringwood Secondary College
promoted physical activity and also promoted respect and
diversity through the school community. Students were
challenged to respect those in their school and also broader
community. Information was provided through the use of stalls,
information stands, posters and displays involving broader
community groups and also student promotion and information
sharing. Day one had the focus “get active” and the health/PE
faculty ran numerous activities for all students during lunchtime.
Day two was a talent quest where all students and staff were
invited to showcase a talent or skill. This event was a huge success
and attended by almost half the school population. A number of
students displayed their amazing talents and the audience were
treated to a range of acts including singing, dancing and bass
guitar playing. The judges had a very difficult time deciding the
winners and after much deliberation awarded first prize to James
Cormack-Brown (Year 7), Second place to Stephen Amos (Year 11)
and third place to Emily Arnott (Year 12). Special mention to Chloe
Horrabin in Year 7 who did an outstanding job.
A huge thank you to our remaining talent acts who showcased
just why Ringwood Secondary is “a college which performs.”

Day three was “Respect and Diversity” day which had rides, stalls,
food vans, activities, local service providers and information
sharing in a carnival like atmosphere accessible to all students and
staff. The Respect and Diversity day also had a physical
component where students participated in the Burmese game
of Sepak Takraw. Students seemed to thoroughly enjoy the Rock
Climbing Wall and Inflatable Obstacle Course which were funded
through a grant provided by Department of Human Services as
part of National Youth Week.
Maroondah Young Leaders Program
We look forward to seeing these leadership qualities and skills
within our school and the broader community.
HUMAN RIGHTS SUMMIT
LGBT Rights at home and abroad
Bianca La Morticella
Alyssa Williams Diamond Htoo Lauren Crooks Ella Keil
On Thursday the 16th May, 5 students
represented Ringwood SC at the United
Nations Youth Summit held at Melbourne
University.
The focus of the summit was the human
rights issues that face gay, lesbian, bi and
transgendered people in Australia and
abroad.
Australia has made massive advances in
minimising prejudices through antidiscrimination
laws and recent policy
changes for equality. However, as Justice
Michael Kirby stated in his keynote address,
Australia is still promoting inequality by not
allowing GLBT people to marry or adopt
children. Michael Kirby asked the students to
not only consider the inequality in Australia
but to focus on the more pressing issues of
violence and hatred that GLBT people face
in other countries.
Through a series of workshops and a mock
UN General Assembly, we were able to
expand our knowledge on these issues and
attempt to provide solutions. We collaborated
with students across the state to create a
resolution which was given to Adam Pulford
(Australian Youth Representative to the UN)
to present to the United Nations in New York.
The UN delegates and Miss Kosnar
The 2013 representatives for Ringwood Secondary College were:
Darcy Amos, Nicholas Schroeder, Rachel Mc Isaac and Emily Thang
from Year 10. Congratulations to these students on completing
the week long program and showing the Mayor, the Welfare
team and their families the numerous skills they developed at the
presentation night.
