In reviewing the overall results we can be highly satisfied that our
students have once again been successful. It is indicative of their
dedication and the commitment of staff throughout the year in preparing
the students. Overall over 8% of all study scores were 40 or
more which places them in the top students in a particular study.
STUDENT UNIFORM
Just a reminder about our uniform changes for 2011.
White socks for boys - A change to the student uniform for 2011
is that boys are to wear plain white socks - no logos or stripes are
permitted. Grey and black socks will no longer be a part of the uniform.
Shoes - Further to the message about acceptable school shoes in
the last newsletter, the following types of shoes are recommended
for 2011.
Examples of types of shoes for girls. They may also wear the traditional
lace-up leather school shoes.
School Council Report
Council met for the last time this year on Wednesday evening and
the following are just some of the key points discussed:
All shoes must be fastened when being worn. This is a safety issue
and untied/unfastened shoes can result in potential accidents. If
shoes are broken they need to be repaired promptly. We appreciate
your cooperation in this matter.
Mrs J. Hughes
Assistant Principal
From Mr Salisbury ...
It was exciting this week to receive the Year 12 results and congratulations
to all students who achieved outstanding results on
their ATAR. Similarly, I commend our students across all year levels
on the quality of their final semester reports. Well done to our high
achieving students and it was a wonderful privilege to duly recognise
you at our recently conducted Presentation Evening.
We say it every year, but the end result is not the only thing we
recognise and value. Of great importance is the attitude and effort
that students bring to the table. For those who have worked
diligently and can sit back in the knowledge that they’ve given the
year their best shot- well done- no one can ask any more of you!
Your outstanding attitude to learning and role modelling sets the
tone of our college and staff are very appreciative of your vital contribution.
It has been another exciting year at
Ringwood and there have been several
highlights for me. I cite the opening of
the college oval (who will ever forget
the world’s biggest nutbush?), unveiling
of the ‘Spirit of Ringwood’ sculpture,
Walkathon (raising in excess of $8000
for the soccerfield) and the successful
implementation of the Year 9 Challen9e
Program.
I would also like to thank the Middle
School Coordinators who have worked tirelessly this year in providing
high level care to the students of Years 9 and 10.
The start of 2011 promises to be very exciting. The soccer field redevelopment
has kicked off and additional fencing is being erected.
The soccer field, once completed, will in combination with the oval,
provide us with a great sporting complex. Another year draws to an
end and it’s finally time to put our feet up and relax with family and
friends! I trust and hope all our students and college families will
have a wonderful Christmas break.
Mr C. Salisbury
Assistant Principal
We were extremely pleased to be presented with a cheque for
$17,000 by Vanessa Bentall, President of the PCTA; this being the
amazing total raised from various activities throughout 2010 e.g.
Debutante Ball, Walkathon. Vanessa was asked to pass on the
thanks of Council and the wider college community to the members
of the PCTA for all their efforts. The money is to go towards the
soccer field restoration, something which will greatly benefit students.
Thank you to families for supporting the work of the PCTA.
Ringwood Trade Training Facility (RTTF) is moving forward into
2011 with enrolments of 75+ students. Joe Pollock advised that
various negotiations are taking place to increase the use of the facility
in partnership with external vocational/trade training providers.
It will be continued to be used by RSC students but will also be
marketed as a resource for local students throughout the MEC.
Council members were treated to a viewing of the recently unveiled
sculpture titled “Spirit of Ringwood”, designed by this year’s Head
Prefect, Andrew Amos. It is a wonderful addition to the art work
displayed around the college grounds and is sure to become a talking
point for students who join the college community for many
years to come.
In 2011 we are moving towards a more Pastoral Care Model for form
assemblies and redefining the roles of level coordinators. While the
changes are still being fine-tuned, the aim will be to expand the
purpose of form assemblies, allowing extra time to cover key topics.
Year level coordinators will be responsible for “communities” of
approx 80 students, similar to the structure of the current Year 9
Challen9e Program.
Michael Phillips thanked members of Council for their contribution
to the college during 2011. Ian Henry, College Council President,
also thanked the members of Council and made special mention of
the work done by teachers and staff within the College. He thanked
them for all their efforts in the education and care of our students
throughout the year and asked Michael to pass this message on to
all staff.
Best wishes to all staff, students and families for the festive holiday
season. Enjoy and be safe.
From the Chaplain
There are so many wonderful aspects to Christmas including, of
course, the presents. But as you get older and presents begin to
not hold the same value they once did, we need to look beyond
the giving and towards the meaning. For many, since that very
first Christmas, it has meant so much more. It gives joy, love, peace
and hope which helps us to focus on the important aspects of life.
We can bring joy to our families despite feeling tired and overrun
with work as the end of the year draws near. We can make a special
effort to love those we often neglect or choose to ignore. We can
bring peace to our families as we learn and choose to forgive any
past hurts they may have caused us in the past.
Christmas is a great time to renew relationships and to look at
things from a new perspective. In a time when most of our planet
stops to celebrate life we can hope for a better future as we look
within ourselves to try and be the difference in our families and our
world to make it just that bit better for everyone. Hope you all have
a special, merry and safe Christmas.
VALEDICTORY 2010
Junior School Team
Valedictory was held in
the Members Dining
Room at the MCG on
Tuesday 30th November.
Students arrived looking
resplendent and
very happy. They were
very excited to be
spending the evening
with their school
friends celebrating the end of their Secondary School years. They
were also chatting about their lives beyond Ringwood Secondary
College.
The Senior School
team, headed by Ms
McDonald ran the
students through a
rehearsal. Once family
members and guests
were seated, the class
of year 12 marched
into the Members
room to the sound of
trumpets and rousing
drumming music.
Page 6
Newsletter Number 15 Dec 15, 2010
The evening proceeded with a variety
of speeches. Mr Phillips talked about highlights
of the students’ school years. This was interwo
ven with snippets of significant community
and global events that had occurred during
the time of their school lives. He finished his speech
with a special reference
to reaching to
the stars from ‘Mary
Poppins’. Ms McDonald
also spoke to the
students with words of
wisdom including the
importance of respect,
acknowledging their
personal strengths and
weaknesses and taking
responsibility for their
actions. She also spoke about the values of Ringwood secondary
College that are held so dearly in the school community, and how
these values assist the students in preparing for their lives.
Special awards were announced and presented to students who
had significant achievements during the year. Each student had
their moment of glory when they came onto the stage to receive
their Ringwood Secondary
College graduation
scroll.
Students had a group
photo on the seating
in the MCG and the
evening ended with
social chatter, photo
taking and delicious
finger food.
We wish the students every success in the future, both in their personal
and professional lives.
EDUCATION OUTREACH – CONNECTED SUPPORT PROGRAM
As part of the Connected Support Program some of our Refugee
students have been doing a series of talks at various primary
schools around the region, focusing on grades 4-6. The students
spoke about the many differences between schools in their home
country and refugee camps and schools in Australia, in particular
lack of resources such
as books and pens,
instead, having to use
blackboards and chalk
, large class sizes ranging
from 70 – 400 students
per class, no recess
only a lunch break,
not being able to ask
questions, punished
with a stick for not doing
their homework on
time and no choice of
subjects, studying only some English and their own language and
culture. The primary school students asked a lot of questions and
were very interested and engaged in listening and learning about
what school is like for children not born in Australia.
Well done to the following students involved and for being such
LIONS CLUB INTERSCHOOL ROUND ROBIN DEBATING
COMPETITION
YEAR 8 : TUESDAY NO-
VEMBER 9TH 2010
Two weeks ago the
2010 interschool Year
7 and 8 Lion’s Club
round robins were
held at Southwood
Boys’ School. Tintern
Girls ‘ School provided
two teams, Southwood
and Ringwood
each one team. We are
very fortunate to have
the Lion’s Club of Heathmont pay for an Adjudicator for the day and
allow the juniors to debate in a relaxed atmosphere. There is a day
for both levels.
YEAR 8
students were well behaved, excited and tongue tied when it came
to using their French, forgetting anything they had learnt in their
lessons over the last 3 years. The waiter was most amused!
As the year 8 debaters were not avail
able for the round robin on this day, a very
talented group of Year 7 students stepped in
for their first debate. They were; Max
Spen
cer, Jaimee Blackwell,
Mikayla Toy, Micah
Veith, Alex Smith, Nick
Schroeder, Nathan
Heenan and Katie Riggall.
The format of the
day is one set topic
and 2 secret topics.
Our side of the first
prepared topic was ‘
That students should
not complete VCE’. Our speakers for this debate were Max, J’aimee
and Mikayla. All three students spoke very confidently and were
praised by the adjudicator for their fantastic effort.
After recess and half an hour preparation time, Mikayla, Nathan and
Nick argued the case ‘That films are better than books’. This team
came up with some excellent points and rebuttals.
After lunch Max, J’aimee and Mikayla argued very convincingly that
cigarettes should be illegal.
Although we did not win, we came 3rd overall. These students had
not debated before this day and are to be congratulated for their
enthusiasm and excellent speeches!
YEAR 7 : FRIDAY NOVEMBER 12TH 2010.
This debate was held on Friday 12th November at Southwood and
the participating schools were two teams from Tintern and one
team from Southwood and Ringwood Secondary College. The students
involved were Irene Giouroukis, Max Spencer, Mikayla Toy
and Nick Schroeder. The set topic for this debate was ‘That the 2010
Commonwealth Games should be the last’. Max, Irene and Mikayla
argued their case well and were congratulated by the adjudicator
for their sound method and manner. We only lost by 2 points!! Our
next debate was the secret topic ‘That beauty pageants do more
harm than good’. Max, Nick and Mikayla had many persuasive arguments
and very good rebuttals!
Our last debate for the day was ‘That dogs are better pets than
dogs’. Irene, Max and Mikayla spoke very confidently and had excellent
points!
Congratulations are owing to all these students for their excellent
preparation and willingness to learn! We came 3rd overall.
Congratulations to this group of very capable year 7 students who
spoke so well on these two days. Their debating skills increased immensely
over the day and in some cases days!
FRENCH RESTAURANT, PARIS GO
A group of 20 year 9 French students enjoyed a wonderful half day
excursion to a restaurant in Rathdowne Street, Carlton, called Paris
Go, last Tuesday. We thank Mr Motton for driving the mini bus for
the group and giving up his time to help us out on the day. We all
enjoyed a rich and scrumptious main meal of bourguignon served
with pomme frite in a basket, and a choice of one delicious dessert,
either, Oeuf a la neige, Chocolate Mousse or Crème Brulee. The
Page 8
The restaurant is a quaint little one, down the quieter end of Rathdowne
Street, and is well worth a visit at some stage if you are looking
for a charming place to go. I am hoping to use this one again for
French students next year.
Students were allowed a 45 minute stroll down Lygon Street before
returning to the bus and then to school. They all followed our
instructions well and were at the bus on time for a prompt departure.
I would like to thank all those students for their politeness, etiquette,
cooperation and happy spirit on the day. We are so lucky at
RSC to have such delightful students.
YEAR 10 HOMESTAY IN BITCHE, FRANCE
We wish the seven students heading to France during the school
holidays a safe and exciting trip. They will be staying with host families
while there and be participating in classes and travel throughout
the country. We look forward to hearing many stories on their
return.
CULTURAL INFUSION INCURSION, LES BATONS ROUGES
Last Friday, years 7, 8 & 9 French students were lucky enough to
enjoy a very special French show, performed at RSC by Josh and
Adam. It was a love story, based in Paris, where the young man is
looking for the love of his life, Alouette. She keeps moving from
place to place and ends up at RSC as a teacher. Two poor unsuspecting
teachers were singled out to be the long lost love of his life!!!! A
most embarrassing few minutes for them, I can assure you.
The students really enjoyed the performance and I will gladly invite
them back next year for their new performance.
MANY THANKS
I would like to extend a warm thank you to all students, parents
and teachers who have worked hard, participated or supported the
LOTE team at RSC over the past year. It has been a fun packed, hard
working time for many and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas
and a safe and happy time over the festive season.
A BRIEF WORD ON STAYING SUNSMART
OVER THE HOLIDAYS:
Did you know :
• 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age
of 70.
• Over 1,700 Australians die from skin cancer each year.
• Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world
These 3 facts alone should scare us into taking precautions
when we are in the sun in our everyday activities.
For many years we have been told to “slip, slop & slap” but this
message has now been extended to 5 steps.
1: Slip on sun protective clothing that will cover as much as your
body as possible
2: Slop on sunscreen – SPF 30+ at least 20 minutes before going
into the sun and reapplying every 2 hours.
3: Slap on a hat – preferably that shades your neck, face and ears.
4: Seek shade.
5: Sunglasses – wear your sunnies to protect your eyes.
The college has a Sunsmart policy and can be found on the college
website – www.ringwoodsc.vic.edu.au
We hope that you have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy and
Safe New Year and look forward to seeing you all back at school in
2011.
The costumes, wigs
and makeup, some of
which were Ringwoods
and some hired, were
sensational.
Features of the show were the
scenery which was projected
from our new cinematic projector,
the senior students who
came together to form the orchestra
and the use of an ‘in the
round’ stage.
The lighting and sound were outstanding
and controlled by junior
students with the help of some
senior students and staff.
Performing Arts
ANY DREAM WILL DO…..
Joseph and his
Technicolour
Dreamcoat appeared
like a
dream and enthralled
audiences
in the College
Hall on Friday,
Sunday and Monday
this week.
It was a wonderful finish to the
school year and a positive look towards
the Performing Arts future
of the college. Well done to all involved.
The cast and crew
pulled the show
together after
only 31 days.
The 80 strong
cast performed
fantastically to
sell out audiences
at both Monday
shows and nearly full houses at the other shows. The show, a part of
the end of year program, was put together over November with the
students working very well together on Tuesday evenings.
