Congratulations to all staff and students on the highly successful
camp held at Phillip Island this week. Many positive reports have
been received and it was pleasing to hear of students’ engagement
and support of the program.
Curriculum Day
A reminder that Monday, 15 April is a Curriculum Day for staff and
no students will be required at college on that day.
Last year, two Year 10 students, Robert Hayes and Casey Finn received
an award for an anti-bullying video they had produced and
this week it is being featured on ‘Compass’ on the ABC, Sunday, 24
March at 6.30 pm. Tune into watch an important issue.
the experience. It remains bitterly cold but despite this our spirits
are high.
As Term 1 draws to a close, we reflect on a very busy Term and wish
the school community a safe and happy holiday.
The Debutante Ball
This newsletter is adorned with some magnificent photos of our
debutantes.
What a night!
37 couples waltzed, shimmied and bedazzled The Grand in
Wantirna with glamour and panache.
The Debs were presented to Mrs Sandra Kitching, our College
Council President and to Mr Ron Hurley, Past President of the
School Council. Indeed, Mr Hurley was the College Council President
when the first Deb Ball was held.
A night like this comes together after the hard work of so many
people.
The College would like to acknowledge the hard work of the
PCTA fund raising committee of Mrs Cathy Bayliss and Mrs Debbie
Dare, the dulcet tones of Mr Brian Amos (who, incidentally,
MCed his 28th Deb Ball in a row!) our dance instructors Mrs Caitlin
Doyle and Mr Tim Doyle, to all the parents that provided the supper
during all the rehearsals and last but not least, our Senior School
team ably led by Mr Matt Porter and our Community Co-ordinators,
Ms Cathy Kinnear and Ms Fiona Sawyer.
Thanks to all.
The dispute between the AEU and DEECD remains unresolved
and hence, the bans on reporting remain in place. Many teachers
are supporting these bans and consequently no assessments will
appear for a number of subjects in student reports.
Other avenues exist for parents to receive feedback on their child.
Parent/teacher/student interviews are being held on Tuesday,
16 April between 12.00 – 8.00 pm. Appointments may be made
through Compass from 22 March. These interviews will provide
an opportunity to discuss student progress in detail and we
strongly recommend families take the opportunity to attend this
session and find out how their child is progressing.
There are no scheduled classes on this day, however, students are
encouraged to attend interviews with their parent/s.
Instructions for making interviews can be found in the Quicklinks
section on the college webpage. www.ringwoodsc.vic.edu.au
For families who do not have access to a computer and the internet,
please contact the General Office to arrange appointments.
Anti – Bullying Day
What an amazing effort by
all our prefects who organized,
volunteered and participated
in anti – bullying
day.
Through their drive and
energy, the entire College
cohort was treated to face
painting, a DJ, a BBQ, a
dodge ball competition and
free badges and wrist bands
pertaining to standing up
and saying ‘NO!’ to bullying.
Congratulations to Luke
Thomas and Bianca La Morticella,
our Welfare Prefects and
thanks also to our VCAL students
for their organization
and hard work.
Upcoming Curriculum Day
Please be aware that the first day of Term 2, Monday, 15 April,
has been designated a Curriculum Day and no students are
required at school on that day. An interesting and relevant program
has been prepared and will involve teachers from all the
schools in the MEC (Maroondah Education Coalition) during the
morning session which will be held at the Karralyka Centre. The
afternoon session will be back at school with teachers working on
curriculum development focusing on differentiation.
Parent Teacher Night
Parents are invited to book a parent/teacher meeting to discuss
the progress of their son/daughter. This term is almost over and it
is vitally important that work habits, classroom engagement and
SACs are discussed openly and genuinely, so that full potential is
reached.
MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
As we near the end of a busy first term, I am reminded of all the
positive things that have been achieved to date. The Year 10 Common
period is connecting Year 10 students and staff through regular
assemblies with an emphasis on what matters to students as
they cement their foundations for the future: leadership, careers,
work habits.
The Year 9 Challen9e Camp has enabled students to move outside
their comfort level and take safe risks in their learning. It is
expected that students take responsibility by arriving at school on
time and in proper uniform, behaving respectfully on the college
grounds and working hard to achieve their personal best. Parents
will have the opportunity to see and hear about the achievements
of their children in the interim reports and at Parent Teacher Interviews.
We encourage all parents to make interview times with staff.
Congratulations to all Middle school students who have received
leadership positions. We look forward to working with these students
over the course of the year.
On the subject of manners. Please remember that the respect of
others is paramount as students make their way to and from school.
It is wonderful to hear the community reporting on the good behaviour
of our students in uniform when they are on excursions. It is
equally important that students are responsible citizens on the way
to school and on the way home.
Leadership Positions
Congratulations to all students who have attained leadership positions
for 2013.
Many of the Ambassadors have already been involved in the college
tours for 2014 and these students have displayed great confidence
and knowledge of the college and its programs. A full list of
leadership positions will be published by the end of term 1.
Worlds Greatest Shave
Jayden Anthony, currently in Year 8, has raised money and awareness
of the fight against Leukaemia. Last Friday, supported by his
Year 8 peers and teachers, Jayden had his hair shaved by a staff
member, Ms J. Condylis, in the quadrangle amidst a hive of activity
during the lunchtime wellbeing celebrations. We commend and
thank Jayden on his positive attitude and willingness to help others.
Bullying. NO WAY!
It was the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence
2013. This annual day provides a focus for schools that want to say
Bullying. No Way! and to strengthen their everyday messages that
bullying and violence at school are not okay at any time.
The Year 8 cohort were spoken to last Friday by many staff, in a level
assembly, about bullying in it many forms and were also privileged
to view a visual display created by several of our VCAL students
(Year 7 students will also be involved in a presentation on March
25th about anti-bullying).
A strong message was relayed to treat each other with respect.
“Do unto others as you would have them do to you”
Please ensure your son/daughter revisits the college’s policies and
agreements on correct usage of the internet, school equipment,
uniform and behaviour. Each student must adhere to the clear
guidelines and protocols outlined in the college student diary and/
or the college website.
Bedford Road Crossing
Students must take to care to cross Bedford Road at the designated
crossing. Several students are risking their lives and the safety of
others by taking short cuts and crossing at dangerous and inappropriate
places. Be careful!
WORLD TOUR REPORT FROM MIRANDA BOYLE
On Saturday March 2, 42 performing arts students met at Tullamarine
airport to set off on World Tour! Amid tears and hugs we left
our families. The plane was long and tiring, but most of us were
running on adrenaline and excitement, and our smiles couldn’t be
taken away.
Members of the public enquired about us, so much so that we were
pressured into singing ‘Holy Grail’ on the plane!
We arrived in a freezing Detroit, full of snow, and were greeted by
eager host families. I went home and had the best sleep I’ve ever
had! The following day was a rest day with our families. Ringwood
students did many different activities with their hosts, from shopping
at the mall, family celebrations, playing in the snow, driving
around Detroit to taste local food (coney dog with chilli cheese
fries and root beer is my personal favourite), going to the theatre,
to even shooting guns!
After so much activity on Sunday, starting school at 7.45 was hard,
but so exciting to discuss with each other and compare notes on
our families.
To me, being in Detroit felt like being on the set of a movie. Berkely
High School was a typical American school, snow lined the streets
Page 5
Newsletter Number 3 March 22, 2013
full of beautiful old houses.
At school we attended the first class with our hosts before meeting
up to fit our show, ‘The Spirit of Melbourne’ onto a new stage. We
performed our show to the music students, and they were a fantastic
audience, particularly loving the flirtatious scenes! Afterwards
we were somewhat celebrities in the school, with Ringwood boys
being the subject of attention from many of the American girls!
We performed once again to all the families in the evening, and it
was a brilliant show.
The following day we toured around Detroit, visiting the Motown
museum, the Henry Ford museum and the Hard Rock cafe, before
a brilliant night at the hockey. Ringwood SC adopted the Detroit
team, the Redwings! The atmosphere at the hockey was amazing,
the fans live and breathe hockey and this was highly evident from
their cheers and screams! To top it all off the Redwings won!!
The Sports Pages..
DIVISION SWIMMING – HAPPY 21ST!!
On the 6th of March at the Booroondara Sports Complex in Balwyn,
our swimming and diving team chalked up its 21st successive division
championship. A strong effort from all of our team set up the
win and the final result was cemented with some excellent performances
in the relay events.
When the final points were tallied, Ringwood had finished on a
whopping 931 points, over 300 points clear of traditional rivals Norwood.
Although it was a real team effort, there were some outstanding individual
performances. Our multiple individual event winners were
Sophie Caldwell (5), Khy Blizzard (5), Courtney Smyth (5), Georgina
Button (5), Tristan Blizzard (5), Alice Matanisiga (4), Cooper Fraser
(3), Luke Percy (3), Jayden Cichowski (2), Nathan Percy (2) and Jacqueline
Smart (2).
The next day we were up early to say goodbye to our american
hosts, and thank them for being so welcoming towards us. We travelled
into Canada, and arrived at Trafalgar Castle School to set up
to perform our only show to them. It is the most amazing school, a
castle built in the 1800’s. It was surrounded by snow which accentuated
the beauty of the school!
The show was brilliant, and we soon met our host families.
The following day we met at the school. The first part of the day was
an assembly, in which we all participated in a quiz on Australia. We
then completed a scavenger hunt, which took us all over the school,
up and down the many flights of stairs. The other activity was ‘Trafalgar
Idol’ (which felt strangely like red faces). In teams we made
up a performance, which eventually was performed to the whole
school at lunchtime. It was really fun and I think everyone made
some good friends.
In the afternoon we sat on a yellow schoolbus and made our way
into downtown Toronto. It was really great to visit some markets
and other interesting streets in the area. We also visited a massive
shopping mall.
It was a long day, but so brilliant getting to know the area while
bonding with everyone in the group!
On Friday, we travelled to the mighty Niagara Falls! We had a lively
tour guide to inform us of the history and geography, as well as escort
the group down into the viewing places behind the falls. Many
students were surprised to see the almost theme park-like town in
such close proximity to the falls. After discovering the town, Clifton
Hill, we left to venture back into Toronto, where some people conquered
their fear of heights to go up the CN tower. It had the most
amazing view, with a big glass floor.
We went home to farewell our hosts before now moving onto England!
Make sure you check out the photos later in the newsletter!
Our other individual winners were Madelyn Tucker, Mitch Crozier,
Emma George, Lauren Flanagan, Cameron Shield, Isaac Parlas and
Sinead Lumsden.
MEDLEY 6/6 8/12
Our relay teams continued their recent dominance in the pool with
SUMMER SPORT ROUND ROBIN UPDATES
This term our Senior and Intermediate students have participated
in Tennis, Cricket, Softball, Baseball and Volleyball during their Summer
Round Robins, with Year 7 and Year 8 students getting their
chance in the coming weeks.
Congratulations to the following teams that have won the division
pennants:
Senior Boys Tennis, Senior Girls Tennis, Senior Boys Baseball, Senior
Boys Volleyball, Intermediate Boys Cricket and Intermediate Boys
Baseball.
SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
In conjunction with the school cross country on the 28th March this
term we will be holding an adidas School Fun-Run as a major fundraising
event this year for Year 7 and 8 students. All money raised
will go towards the installation of water taps/drinking fountains on
the oval. These should be a great addition to an area of the school
used by all students.
Interviews of Year 10 students have commenced and each student
will hopefully have a career pathway plan mapped out by the middle
of Term 2. In the common period held last week all students
participated in a careers focused presentation that will equip them
to make sound choices for their VCE/VCAL studies for 2014. Several
websites were explained to the students and links are provided: The
Job Guide, Youth Central and Lea. By the start of Term 2 all students
should have their resume and a cover letter completed and emailed
Kyle Simkin
Sports Coordinator
Careers interviews are well underway and hopefully this process
will be completed by the first few weeks of Term 2. Most students
have spent valuable time planning their career pathway for 2014
in consultation with a career practitioner. In upcoming, common
periods, several guest speakers from a range of tertiary institutions
will visit the college and in the last week of Term 2 all students will
attend the TIS (Tertiary Information Session) at Deakin University,
where they will view an expo as well as listen to a range of guest
speakers about the VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre)
process for applications for University or TAFE for 2014.
Learn Experience Access Professions (LEAP) Program
The LEAP Program aims to demystify the links between school,
university and professions. LEAP seeks to encourage secondary
students from low SES communities to consider higher education
as a future option through a focus on the professions. By offering
free access to a range of university campus, workplace and schoolbased
activities along with online resources, LEAP aims to help students
learn more about their career options in selected professions,
and the role of university study in attaining their career goals. Engineering,
Health, Design and Law professions are the first four with
other professional fields being added over time. For more information
2013 Top Designs Launch
The 2013 Top Designs exhibition was launched on Friday 15th
March at the Melbourne Museum. Among the featured works, created
by the most outstanding
VCE students from 2012,
was our very own Meleonie
Meyer.
Meleonie graduated from
Ringwood Secondary College
at the end of 2012,
and as part of her VCE Units
3 and 4 Media course she
created the Melbourne-inspired
magazine; Elliotte. “The idea for Elliotte came from a personal
interest in creative lifestyle magazines, such as Frankie and online
presses such as Dashing magazine.
Inspired by these I chose to create a
magazine aimed at young women,
showcasing Melbourne’s quirks
and hidden gems with a kitsch
touch.”
The 2013 VCE Season of Excellence
received 189 Applications for Photography,
Print Layout and Multimedia,
of which only 18 made it
to final selection to be featured as
part of this year’s exhibition.
As part of the selection process,
works are first shortlisted. The talents
of Ringwood SC students were
also featured in this process, with Stefan Barut, who also graduated
in 2012, shortlisted for the Food and Technology folios exhibition.
Meleonie’s dedication and commitment to her final Media product
has definitely paid off. After eight long months of hard work, day
trips to the city, seeking copyright permissions, writing and editing
her own articles, capturing hundreds of photographs, and learning
how to use editing software, Meleonie’s
beautifully crafted Elliotte
magazine will be on exhibition at
the Melbourne Museum for the
next few months.
We would like to encourage the
Ringwood SC community to vote
for Meleonie’s magazine as part
of the People’s Choice Awards,
run in conjunction with the exhibition.
Cast your vote by visiting
International..
We have begun the year with
13 International fee paying
students from Vietnam,
China, Hong Kong and
Mauritius. In Terms Two and
Three another 3 students
will join the group at RSC.
All students must complete
at least 6 months in a language
school before coming
across to Ringwood to join mainstream classes.
We wish all our students all the very best for 2013 !
Congratulations to Erkang Gu who graduated from RSC at the end
of last year and has been presented with an Engineering scholarship
from Monash.
RSC wishes to welcome two very special visitors , Anna VanHoof
and Hannah Blucher-Martin. The girls are on 6 weeks exchange
from Trafalgar Castle School, Ontario, Canada. Whilst in Australia
Anna and Hannah will be hosted by the Sheers and Whitby families.
We thank them for their involvement in the program.
During the year we will be visited by students from Montfort College,
our sister school in Thailand. We will once again be asking for
families to support us by providing home stay for these students.
We look forward to another busy year ahead.
First Aid..
IMMUNISATIONS:
Marie Maloney and James Barut
Thank you to all those that returned their forms. The first day of
immunisations went well and the majority of students coped well
despite the heat. We still have about 70 outstanding Year 10 immunisation
cards and we still need these returned to us as soon as
possible please.
HEADLICE:
There has been some isolated cases of headlice. Please check your
child’s hair regularly and if head lice or eggs are found, treat appropriately.
Health regulations require that where a child has head
lice that the child should not return to school until the day after
appropriate treatment has started.
For further information see website: www.health.vic.gov.au/headlice
HEADACHES:
We always see a lot of children in sick bay with headaches.
Headaches can be caused by so many things but to be put simply
-anything which causes irritation to the nerves around the face,
head, neck, or even inside the skull, can cause pain in the head.
These may include: dental problems, neck strain, eyestrain, eye diseases,
jaw problems, blood pressure problems, ear/nose or throat
problems, muscular tension... etc. This is why it is recommended
that if the headache persists or worsens that you should get medical
advice to ensure that there is no underlying problem.
Page 9
At first aid we can dispense paracetamol (panadol, panamax etc) if
we have a signed permission slip from the parents for their child.
Tips for the prevention of headaches:
1: Get plenty of sleep. Studies have shown that most teens require
8 ½ - 9 hours sleep a night to perform at their best.
2: Remain hydrated – drink plenty of water and eat well.
3: Avoid any known trigger factors – eg: certain perfumes can cause
headaches for certain people.
4: Eliminate as much stress as possible. This is often easier said than
done but for example - when studying - plan study-free breaks and
do relaxation exercises. Simple stretching exercises will help relive
muscle tension.
5: Get a healthy amount of exercise and get out into the fresh air
where possible.
Technology News..
URGENT - EVERY PARENT NEEDS TO READ THIS INFORMATION
Technology is growing at a rapid rate, especially mobile devices.
There are new software programs and Apps coming online daily,
which can make life a lot easier and enjoyable. Keeping up with
children and technology is a fulltime job, but it’s an extremely important
one that must be remembered.
As parents and children, it is our responsibility, to be open and
aware of the programs, websites and apps that we are using and
these online activities need to be supervised.
There has been a huge jump in the use of Instagram, Flickr and Kik.
As parents, you have the right to decide whether your child is ready
for these types of programs, but unfortunately, they have recently
been used inappropriately, to annoy, scare and pressure other students.
It is extremely difficult for teachers to sort out online “issues”
that occur out of school hours. Teachers are doing all they can to
reinforce cyber safety strategies and to educate students about the
consequences of cyber bullying. We want everybody to stay safe
online, but we need your help!
If your children use any of these programs (including older siblings!)
we ask that you monitor and supervise their use, so that
these online activities remain a positive experience for everybody.
If you have no idea what these programs are, then we recommend
you Google them and have a quick read as to their applications. A
good guide is; if an application or website has no privacy settings,
do not use it. Where there are privacy settings, ensure that they are
turned on and that children only share content with people they
physically know.
Other online issues at home that we are hearing from students include:
• Online gaming– Students joining group games where they do not
know the identity of other players (very risky!)
• Facebook and YouTube – students uploading photographs of
other children without student or parent permission
• Kik– students rating each other (similar to like/dislike on Facebook).
This activity is extremely concerning and has huge implications
for children’s self-esteem.
Please talk to your children about these inappropriate activities.
Enjoy technology, but remember:
STAY SAFE ONLINE. STAY NICE ONLINE.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
DIRECT ATTENDANCE LINE – 9845 7519
WHAT TO DO IF A STUDENT WILL BE ABSENT FOR ANY REASON
YEARS 8-10

Ring the attendance line each time your child is absent from school – No need to send a note if this is
done.
If you are leaving a message on the line please give a reason for the absence.
Please provide a note or ring the school if you know your child will be late for any reason. Too
many unapproved late arrivals may result in students being given a detention.
Ongoing absences due to illness or other medical issues will require a medical certificate or letter
from a treating health professional otherwise the absences may not be approved.
VCE STUDENTS

Notification of absences is essential for year 11 and 12 students as their attendance is monitored on a
daily basis.
For absences longer that 1 day a medical certificate will be required.
Ongoing illnesses also require a medical certificate to cover the period of absence or absences
Students who are absent on days where they have a SAC must provide a medical certificate to cover
this period otherwise no allowance will be made to do the SAC at a later date
Please be aware that students are required to attend Form Assembly on Monday, Wednesday and
Fridays even if they have a free period following FA as this is where a lot of information is given out
about school and year level activities.
Detentions may be given by year level Community Heads for missing Form Assembly on a regular
basis
Why Regular Attendance is Important
Poor patterns of attendance place students at risk of not achieving their educational, social and psychological
potential. Children also need time to socialise with his peers and to build friendships. Regular attendance at
school is particularly important in the transition from primary to secondary school as it can be a stressful
time for some children and a consistent pattern of attendance makes this process easier and helps them to
overcome some of the initial concerns around being at a new school. Regular attendance also gives children
the opportunity to develop important relationships with their teachers and the school community in general.
At the beginning of 2014 Ringwood Secondary College will be proudly celebrating its 60 th year of
educating young people and equipping them for the future. To recognise this milestone it is planned
to have a permanent static display to remind all students and visitors to this college that it has a long
and proud history of service to the community. This display will be visually attractive and we believe
it to be unique to this college.
It is planned to present the history of the college in stone for all to see. A granite bollard with a
stainless steel cap will represent each decade. The school’s/college’s history will be on display
showing the most significant highlights and achievements for each decade. These bollards will be
strategically placed around the school where they can be readily observed and appreciated. Perhaps
they can be reminders of events you may have forgotten from your school years. Maybe there will
be things you didn’t know about the college.
You can also be a part of this permanent display.
As an ex-student; a staff member or ex-staff member; a parent of an ex-student, or a person who is
attending or has attended this college, you can have your name or the names of past and present
students displayed on a bollard for others to see and to remember fellow students.
To take part you can purchase a commemoration plaque and indicate the name or names you want
inscribed on the plaque(s) to be remembered as a student or ex-student of this college. There are
three types of plaques to choose from, as shown on the other side of this page, for your personal
names or family names. Your plaque(s) will display the name(s) and the years the nominated
person(s) attended the former Ringwood High School or Ringwood Secondary College.
How you can be included in the Ringwood Secondary College history.
Fill in the attached Application Request on the other side after selecting one of the design types
illustrated. Write the name or names of the student or students, or the family name and the start
and end years on the application where indicated and include the payment as applicable so when
the day of celebration arrives your plaque will be on permanent display on a bollard.
A single plaque will cost $195 and additional plaques will be at a reduced price of $150 per plaque.
Please note that this price is an introductory price and will only apply until 31 December 2013. After
that date the cost of the plaques will increase.
How to complete your Application Request.
1 Select the type (s) of plaque of plaques required from the other side of this sheet.
2 Fill in the details where indicated in block letters and complete your details in the
Murdoch Childrens Research Institute at the Royal Children’s Hospital is running a randomised clinical trial
of an online weight management program designed for overweight adolescents aged 12 to 17.
Staying Fit is an internet-based program designed to encourage overweight adolescents to make healthy
food choices and increase physical activity. The Staying Fit program has been used successfully in the
United States and we have modified it to make it suitable for young people in Australia. Participants are
randomised to the Staying Fit program or the Usual Care program. For those in the Staying Fit group,
personalised support for each individual is delivered after considering each adolescent’s BMI, along with
weight and shape concerns. This support includes weekly personalised contact, the use of a pedometer and
access to a walking program. Staying Fit contains interactive quizzes, logs and a discussion board. The
program takes approximately 1 hour per week for around 12 weeks. Those randomised to the Usual Care
program will receive physical activity and nutrition information currently available to Adolescents.
The participants are asked to complete online questionnaires and have their height, weight, blood pressure
and waist circumference measured by a researcher at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months follow-ups.
Measurements are taken in the participant’s home or at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Parents are also
invited to complete questionnaires and are sent regular newsletters on how they can support their
teenager. The results will demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of using the personalised, targeted
Staying Fit program for addressing weight-related behaviours during adolescence. Recruitment has
commenced and we are looking for overweight young people aged between 12 and 17.
If you would like to know more, contact the Staying Fit Project Coordinator, Karly Cini on (03) 9345 6954 or
email: stayingfit@mcri.edu.au
