See the timetable attached First Aid HAYFEVER Matthew Porter It is now September and the beautiful spring weather should soon be upon us but a lot of people commonly suffer from hay fever at this time of the year. Hay fever can occur all year round but it is traditionally worse in the Spring months when the pollen count in the air is high. Hay fever is a common name for allergic rhinitis – meaning an allergy in the nose. The allergic reaction causes the nasal passages to become inflamed and produce more mucous. Some of the common symptoms are : sneezing; runny or stuffy nose; itchy ears ,nose and throat; red, itchy and watery eyes and sometimes headaches. Tips to try and reduce hay fever symptoms: 1: Stay indoors where possible on windy and stormy days 2: Smear Vaseline on the inside of your nose to help stop the airborne pollen touching the lining of your nose. 3: Splash your eyes often with cold water as this tries to flush out any pollen. 4: Try and reduce contact with known allergens eg – pet fur, flowers, dust etc.. Anti-histamine medications in the form of tablets, nasal sprays and eye drops may help alleviate symptoms but you need to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist. Newsletter Number 11 September 10, 2010 MENTAL HEALTH WEEK Welfare Young people who get very little sleep are much more likely to become mentally ill, Australian research shows. Lack of sleep might help explain the puzzling increase in mental illness among young people over the past decades, said the research leader, Nicholas Glozier. He suggested late-night internet use might be one reason young people were sleeping less. The study of about 20,000 people aged between 17 and 24 found those who slept less than five hours a night were three times more likely than normal sleepers to become psychologically distressed in the next year. Each hour of sleep lost was linked to a 14 per cent increased risk of distress. “Sleep disturbance and in particular insomnia is a predictor of later development of depression and possibly anxiety,” said Professor Glozier.
