Newsletter Number 11 September 10, 2010 were some great interviews, news reports and personal reports on what makes people happy. It was very scary for the students, but they all did a fantastic job. The students had great fun, and it was fantastic to see the older students taking on the roles of producer and panel operator with great success. We also enjoyed a tour of SBS radio, where the students were astounded to hear they broadcast 68 languages. The difference between the technology at SBS and SYN was interesting. The students again enjoyed using some of the technology and expensive microphones. Lastly, we visited Screen Worlds, to look at how technology is used in films with sound effects and movement. We will be able to draw on this in the study of film during the rest of this term and next term. Cathy Kinnear Update On Our Refugee Students BRIDGING PROGRAM The Bridging Program for refugee students is being re-developed to provide a stronger learning platform in relation to their literacy, numeracy and general learning ability and to provide a holistic approach to developing their social and life skills. Good progress has been made thanks to the contribution and input made by many teachers’ to the project and the wellbeing of the refugee students overall. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM – SUBJECT TO FUNDING Six refugee students from Ringwood and six from Maroondah have the opportunity to work together to produce a ‘larger than life book’ of their Life and Journey – past – present – and future. The application for funding is being put together by Lyn McGoldrick & Dina Mihailidis and involves an established artist ( Conrad Black) working with the students starting in March 2011 for 20 weeks to produce this artwork. And speaking of art works, next term some of the refugee art from a few projects the students have worked on will be featured around the school. Please take the time to have a look at them. It is by Oh Pwe Htoo - Yr 10 MULTICULTURAL CHOIR The Multicultural Choir has a new name – ARUMA which is an aboriginal word for happy or joyful which is exactly how they feel when they sing. The choir has been practicing for the Gala Concert and the students are looking forward to performing for the first time on a big stage with the school orchestra. As a special surprise for the students they have been given the opportunity to sing with the choir of Hope & Inspiration (formerly the Choir of Hard Knocks ) in Federation Square some time next term which will be a wonderful achievement for them. HOMEWORK CLUB The homework club runs after school on Monday & Thursdays until 5pm and is staffed by RSC teachers and volunteers who kindly give up some time in their busy day to assist the students with their homework and other school work. As the homework club can be very busy at times we are always looking for more volunteers. If you can help out please let myself or Cathy Kinnear know it would be much appreciated. CONNECTED SUPPORT PROGRAM This program is run my Kate Wilde a very experienced Youth Worker and psychology undergraduate who comes to RSC once a week to run these sessions. The program is designed to give the students a ‘collective voice’ and to raise any issues they may have or concerns they feel are important in a supported and informative environment. The outcomes from this program will help identify where the future support programs need to be focused. CONNECTION LEADERS Currently we have 15 connection leaders who will be working with the refugee students to organise a variety of activities that will help support and encourage the building of the relationships between all students at Ringwood Secondary College YOUTH LAW PROGRAM Starting week two of term 4 - Youth Law will be running information sessions for the students covering a whole range of issues and topics that are relevant to young adults. They also provide a free legal service for all young people in Victoria. Kay Priestly Refugee Support Coordination Music Thank you to the Symphonic Band and Senior Stage Band for contributing to the Salvation Army’s Concert for Cancer held on Daffodil Day. The concert made over $3000 and we were very please to be able to contribute our music to such a worthwhile cause. Congratulations to all ensembles on their performances at South Street Competitions in Ballarat last weekend. All ensembles performed their best ever yet at this event. Well done to Training Stage Band for gaining 3rd in the Junior Stage Band section and Intermediate Stage Page 6
Newsletter Number 11 September 10, 2010 Band for their Honorable Mention in the intermediate section. Next Thursday 16 September is the final performance of all 2010 ensembles, which are in fine form, and also a farewell to our year 12’s. Please join us for a wonderful night of music making starting at 7.30 pm at George Woods Performing Arts Centre, Yarra Valley Grammar. Tickets can be purchased at the door, $12 Adults, $8 concession or $30 a family of four. A reminder that all music students are required for Finale rehearsal next Monday 13 September, 3.30 -5.30pm and Wednesday 15 September 1.30 – 4.30 pm ( TBC on Monday 13 September whether this rehearsal is necessary). A reminder that all music students need to find their own transport to the dress rehearsal at Yarra Valley Grammar at 7.15 am! Students will return to RSC via bus and permission slips for travel are now overdue! Please return to PAC office ASAP. Again we will be filming gala and there will be order forms available at the PAC office next week. Order forms will also be available at the concert. Great Christmas presents and memento for your year in music at RSC. First week next term we are holding auditions for all 2011 ensembles. Audition times are up in the PAC foyer and excerpts can be collected to prepare for the auditions. Please note 2011 ensembles will commence week 2 of term 4. Preparations for Band Tour are well under way. All ensembles, including Training Band are required for the full rehearsal Tuesday 5 &12 October 3.30 -6.30pm. Well done to all for 2010 and here’s to starting 2011 next term! The Sports Pages JUNIOR SCHOOL NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Janine Pero Director of Music Page 7 Congratulations to the Junior School Netball Championship players for their fantastic effort on Thursday 2nd of September finishing 5th overall in the State. The girls finished top in their section during the rounds and made it to the finals day last Thursday where they missed out on completing in finals by 0.04%. A big thanks to the parents that came to support the girls and score when needed on both days. Well done Madeline Wright, Madelyn Tucker, Courtney Blythe and Peta Monk of Year 7. Megan Williams, Ashleigh Oliver, Kayla Aitchison, Holly Tregenza, Amy Prescott and Holly Bluhm of Year 8. Allison Kenins TABLE TENNIS AND BADMINTON This was the last year for our star Year 12 Boys table tennis team. Jeremy, Huy, Jarrod and Chris made it to the state finals in five of their six years at Ringwood. Apart from winning the state title in year 7, one of the highlights was having to play the grand final against Melbourne High in a squash court because they didn’t book sufficient time in the table tennis hall at MSAC. Thanks to the parents for their support over the years and to the students for the excellent manner in which they have represented the College. As usual, the rest of our table tennis teams have won through to Zone. The year 12 boys have also been excellent players for us in badminton and it has been a pleasure to watch their progress since year 7. Our Year 7 girls team performed best of our other badminton teams, missing out on Zone finals by only a few points. Well done to all our players who have demonstrated enthusiasm and sportsmanship in representing our College. Wayne Houben DISTRICT ATHLETICS : ‘SIXPEAT’! The Maroondah District Athletics were held at the Ringwood Athletic Track at the end of August and Ringwood athletes rose to the occasion to win our sixth successive District Championship. We got off to a great start in the first events of the day when Adam Percy and Shannon McDade finished first in their respective 3000m events, and the results continued to get better as the day progressed. After the first progressive points score which announced that Ringwood held a solid 90 point lead, it continued to grow until the final score showed Ringwood had won by a whopping 576 points from Norwood with Heathmont a further 16 points adrift. Apart from the grand aggregate, Ringwood also won the other 6 pennants on offer. A feature of the day was the fantastic team effort that saw many first placings, but also many athletes who pushed themselves to personal bests in striving for a few extra points. It was also great to see the large number of students who willingly volunteered to fill events where our competitors were absent or injured. A spe-
