DANCE MOVES
Yesterday was a big day for over 80 of our students as they participated
in VicMoves 2010. After arriving at the Comedy Theatre in the
morning our group had a set time to rehearse on stage and program
their lighting. They also participated in workshops throughout
the day.
In the evening program a 3 minute “making of” video was shown
and our dancers took to the stage to perform a variety of dance
movements in an 8 minute choreographed performance. A Circus
theme was selected by our team.
The program was developed by our students,, with the support of
other teachers and in particular Ms Kate Stanley. All students developed
aspects of their leadership potential and self-confidence
during the process and were recognized at the end of the evening
when they received the Beyond Blue Award which focused on
teamwork and a willingness to listen and learn from others too.
Congratulations to all involved in this undertaking.
GALA CONCERT
A highlight of the annual calendar is our Gala Concert to be held
on Thursday September 16 at 7:30pm at the George Wood Centre,
Yarra Valley Anglican School. Tickets are available for purchase at
the door and I encourage you to attend this concert and farewell
our Year 12 students.
WALK FOR SOCCER FIELD REDEVELOPMENT
Well done to Mr. Chris Salisbury who coordinated this fantastic
community event that raised over $7,000. The spirit and teamwork
created was immense, as was the support from so many families.
Congratulations to 7C who raised the most and will enjoy a
half day excursion.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT
A reminder that the college has high expectations of all our students
when travelling to or from school.
This includes respecting others and their right to feel safe, when
using public transport. There are clear rules surrounding the use of
trains, buses and around stations and bus stops. Any student who is
unable to behave appropriately can be dealt with by the authorities
and will receive sanctions from the college.
Thank you to all those students who bring great credit to themselves,
their families and the college and are so positive when dealing
with others. It is appreciated.
Newsletter Number 11 September 10, 2010
As this is the last newsletter for the term, I know that our Year 12
students are currently planning a range of approaches to revision
in each of their studies. It is a timely reminder to all others of the
importance of adequate preparation leading into final assessments
that take place in term 4.
Second Hand Uniform and Card Extravaganza
Uniform will be available in the 411 portable and the card display
will be in the College library. Community members are most welcomed.
MLA for Bayswater, attended the college as Principal for a Day.
Council approved the College fees for 2010 with the Materials,
equipment and service fee representing a 5.5% increase. There was
discussion regarding the non payment of school fees and alternative
measures for assisting families to make payments will be investigated
for 2011.
The college Attendance Policy was adopted following a recent review
by the Policy and Education Committee. Council was pleased
with the fundraising activities undertaken by our parent groups:
PCTA, Ladies’ Auxiliary and Music Association. Money raised will
provide additional equipment/resources for different areas within
the school program, for example, money raised in the Walkathon
will go towards the redevelopment of the soccer ground.
VCE – LAST FEW WEEKS OF YEAR 12
All students are urged to avail themselves of the Revision class
opportunities organized by the MEC. Timetables are available
from the VCE office.
At this stage of one’s final year, students need to reflect both organisation
and need. The co-ordinators have given an inordinate
amount of time chasing, cajoling, counselling and generally caring
that all seek to achieve their personal best. Sometimes consideration
for teachers is not forthcoming by students who can
be engulfed in one’s own horizon.
End of the year events are already planned and expectations conveyed.
An extra event being planned by a Year 12 student has no
association with the college and parents will realize this because
no communication has emanated from the college.
Year 11 students are bid a great farewell in travelling to Central
Australia and Miss Solomon and her team are duly applauded Attendance
in class for those remaining offers a great opportunity
to clarify ones learning and seek teacher feedback.
Council acknowledged the work of the Heritage group in recording,
maintaining and storing artifacts of the past and asked that the
group provide recommendations on how to support this task long
term.
An MEC (Maroondah Education Coalition) Report outlined the
many activities that the college is currently participating in and
Council recognised the diversity of these programs and the number
of teachers and students involved.
Council heard of developments with Facilities. The college has
been entered in the Victorian Schools’ Garden Competition again
this year and a visit from the judges is expected next week. A report
on the oval redevelopment was very positive as it has withstood
the wet winter and students have been able to continue using it.
Fencing for the back of the oval is expected soon – construction has
been delayed due to the inclement weather.
LEADERSHIP – STUDENTS (VCE)
Consideration re applying for a Prefect role in 2011 will be presented
next term and all Year 11 students need to consider their
aptitude, ideas and experiences.
DEBUTANTE BALL - 2011
MARCH 19TH: THE GRAND, WANTIRNA
Expressions of interest will be called for in late October and details
presented re the March timeline, guidelines and commitments
required. All families must note that this is an extracurricular
event as a family’s commitment to college levies for key learning
programmes takes precedence. We value parent support and the
endorsement of this ethos augurs well for community responsibility.
SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT
At the meeting on 25 August, Council heard of recent activities
that reaffirm the breadth of opportunity at the college. Strong
student participation in Melbourne Bands Festival was commended,
with students receiving feedback and recognition of
participation. In the sporting field, Adam, Luke and Nathan Percy
participated in the National Cross Country Championships - a
great effort. Visitors to the school included Professor Yong Zhao
from the University of Michigan and the EMR Leadership team
who talked with students and staff about the use of technology
in learning and the CHALLEN9E program; and Ms Heidi Victoria,
Page 3
Lastly, as part of the Occupational Health and Safety Report, approximately
$5,000 has been spent on footstops and guards to
improve safety of plant machinery. Further, risk assessments for all
processes are almost completed.
WALKATHON!
Soccer field here we come.
Congratulations to the students
and families of years 7
and 8 on your wonderful efforts
in raising $7000 for the
annual college walkathon. It
was a sensational achievement
and all money raised will
contribute to our soccer field redevelopment.
A big thank-you
thankful to staff, students from
Years 9 to 12 for their out of uniform
contribution and the PCTA
who obtained sponsorship and
prepared all the outstanding prizes
for students. The walkathon,
held on August 27, was bathed
in beautiful sunshine, despite the

constant rain before and after the event. Everyone involved enjoyed
the walk through the local area, taking in Wombolano Park and the
streets of East Ringwood. Ms Milkeraitis and her form, 7C, won the
form competition and can now look forward to a half day excursion
later in the year. Approximately 150 students raised in excess
of $20. Enjoy the accompanying photos.
SCHOOLS’ GARDEN COMPETITION
Last week the College was judged by a regional representative for
the Schools’ Garden Competition and we are optimistic of doing
well. The link corridor was full of pictures depicting our journey
over recent years in improving the school gardens and grounds. A
big thank-you to Ms Currie and Amber Craig for assisting on the
morning.
Some reminders for Term 4:
Boys may wear polo tops
T shirts are not to be worn under polo tops
Mr C. Salisbury
Assistant Principal
Chaplain Spot
I have really enjoyed this term
as I have had the opportunity
to build some remote control
cars with some year 7 students.
Apart from being heaps of fun,
I loved watching the development
I saw within the students.
They started the program asking
me why they had to build the car
rather than just race them. However in the end they were exceedingly
proud of themselves because of their achievements. They
enjoyed racing the cars all the more because they had built them.
The easy option of a pre-built car would have provided some fleeting
instant gratification in racing them but would have missed the
important step of them realising their ability to build thus growing
in their self confidence. Often we want the immediate gratification
and are not willing to endure the process and the consequent opportunity
to grow. Therefore sometimes we miss it out on making
the most of the opportunities that present themselves.
VET TASTER
Our wonderful Year 10 students
began on the second VET Taster
course the week after our first success
with the EH Holden Station
Wagon, which was resurrected in a
mere three days. This second crew
began with a 1965 HD Holden
Premier sedan, last registered
way back in 1986.
This car was found in a run
down private garage in
Ferntree Gully, which it had
inhabited for the past seventeen
years. It had several panels secured with coat hanger wire, no
engine or gearbox, no working brakes and among a host of other
issues, four flat and perished tyres. After a thorough examination,
the students were allowed to commence work. Relative brake components
were replaced, an engine was fitted and an automatic
transmission was installed in the place where a manual gearbox
once resided.
On the last Friday half an hour before the end of the school day,
the students watched their car driving on the quadrangle. A unique
feature was that the original owners’ new car documentation came
with the vehicle. While pondering its information, I liked to imagine
that the cars’ original Mont Albert family would be proud of what
our students have achieved.
YEAR 11 LAPTOPS.
Peter Anderson
BUYOUT OR RETURN?? ACTION NEEDED...
As you would be aware this is the last year of your laptop lease.
As such you have a choice to either buy out your laptop paying an
additional $290 (if you pay for home use on an annual basis) or ($1
if you paid the full amount minus a dollar initally ) or returning the
laptop before your exams to the school, during the week before
your exams at times and a room to be advised.
If you are returning your laptop you need to ensure that laptop is in
full working order, no stickers, graffiti, blink, glitter, jewels etc, any
repairs need to be made before handback. If the repairs are not
covered by warranty then you will need to pay to have the laptop
repaired as per the agreement made with the college. You need to
return the laptop, charger, remote, bag, box with the cd’s.
If you are purchasing your laptop out right you need to be proactive
in bring your laptop in for repair during the term 3 and 4. This
is the last year of your warranty so you cannot wait to have repairs
completed beyond November / early December.
You must meet the deadlines for laptop buy out or return so please
discuss this with your parents and be proactive in having repairs
completed to your laptop.
If you are a day user you need to ensure your laptop is in the correct
condition for return. No stickers etc all working and repaired ready
to be handed in with bag.
A letter has been sent home explaining the cost of buy out if you /
your parents gave not received this letter please see Mrs Vasey in
the office for a copy
LITERACY AND NUMERACY WEEK
Ms Rafferty
A range of exciting activities were on offer to students during the
week. These included: a spelling bee, French fashion parades, calculating
prices in Indonesian, digital story telling, 7-10 writing competition,
creating a modern text from a Shakespearean text, creating
radio segments to be recorded at SYN FM- RMIT, Maths Problem
Challenges and timed numeracy activities.
Even though Literacy and Numeracy week is over, the emphasis on
acquiring literacy and numeracy skills is not. Parents may support
their children in the strengthening of these skills by conversing
with their children about the activities they undertake at school.
One significant opportunity is the Maroondah Education Coalition
launch of the Year 8 short story competition in recognition of the
fact that Year 8 students are encouraged to write and deserve recognition
for their writing efforts. The schools in the coalition are
promoting this competition and we wish all students luck as they
enter their responses. Further details about the competition are included
in this newsletter.
Staff celebrated the week by sending photos of their bookcases
and having their colleagues deduce ‘Whose bookcase is it?’ It was
an enjoyable competition that highlighted the diverse reading interests
of our staff.
INTEGRATED PROJECT ON SUSTAINABILITY
HALF TIME PROGRESS
What an exciting two weeks it has been! Students are really embracing
the learning that is
occurring in the project and I
have been fortunate enough
to watch them in classrooms
as they engage in a variety of
tasks. These tasks include: writing
a persuasive response on
the topic ‘Melbournians should
drink recycled sewerage water,’
making their own paper, examining
the water quality at different sites of the Yarra River and
Mullum Mullum creek, identifying and understanding the biodiversity
of plants and species in
the water they are examining,
graphing water usage, collecting
recycled materials for
creation of their own musical
instruments and completing a
mind map which explains why
is Melbourne going through a
water shortage.
Students are working in teams
to put their collective knowledge into a performance of understanding-
in this case their Sustainability board game which they
will display at the end of the term in the hall at the Sustainability
showcase. This will be accompanied by their own musical instrument
and unique piece of music to bring the project to a finale. The
crowning glory will be a recycled newspaper cylinder with seeds
that students will plant in the garden at home, nurture and report
on progress at the beginning of next term.
An extension activity for Year 8s is the Future Shots short video on
Sustainability that is running with Ms Eversteyn.
Student Assessment
1. NAPLAN Reports for students should arrive at the College in mid
September and these will then be mailed to parents. Additional
copies of the reports, where required, will be distributed once they
have been received from VCAA. This will occur once all the initial
student reports have been distributed.
2. TIMSS Study 2010
One of our Year 8 classes (8F) has been selected to take part in the
Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).
TIMSS is an important educational research project investigating
student achievement in mathematics and science. More than 60
countries, including Australia, are participating in this study. TIMSS
is an important activity to keep us, as parents and citizens, informed
Page 5
about how our students in Australia are performing in comparison
to their peers in other countries, and to compare programs of study
and teaching practices. The results obtained will help improve the
teaching and learning of mathematics and science in our country.
Selected students will do an assessment in mathematics and science
and complete a questionnaire about their experiences at
home and school. There is no need for students to study specifically
for the assessment as it will not affect individual students’ grades
or progress in school. All data will be kept strictly confidential and
no individual student or school will be identified in published data
or reports.
The assessment and completion of the questionnaire will take place
in mid–November.
Media Excursion
3rd September
Last Friday the Bridging Program
Students went on an
excursion as part of their
studies of radio and film. We
travelled to SYN FM, SBS Radio
and ScreenWorlds.
Kim Watson, Sarah Kramer, Nathan Hughes and Rob Motton
At SYN FM, the students worked together
to create their own 20 minute radio
show. Each student had previously
written a short segment, and practised
their pronunciation with a microphone.
Three students took on the important
roles of Producer, Panel Operator and
Music DJ. Visiting and recording in a real
radio studio was daunting, but exciting,
and for many it was the first time they
had heard their voice recorded! There
Newsletter Number 11 September 10, 2010
were some great interviews, news reports and personal reports on
what makes people happy. It was very scary for the students, but
they all did a fantastic job. The students had great fun, and it was
fantastic to see the older students taking on the roles of producer
and panel operator with great success.
We also enjoyed a tour of SBS radio, where the students were astounded
to hear they broadcast 68 languages. The difference between
the technology at SBS and SYN was interesting. The students
again enjoyed using some of the technology and expensive microphones.
Lastly, we visited Screen Worlds, to look at how technology
is used in films with sound effects and movement. We will be able
to draw on this in the study of film during the rest of this term and
next term.
Update On Our Refugee Students
BRIDGING PROGRAM
The Bridging Program for refugee students is being re-developed
to provide a stronger learning platform in relation to their literacy,
numeracy and general learning ability and to provide a holistic approach
to developing their social and life skills. Good progress has
been made thanks to the contribution and input made by many
teachers’ to the project and the wellbeing of the refugee students
overall.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM – SUBJECT TO FUNDING
Six refugee students from
Ringwood and six from
Maroondah have the
opportunity to work together
to produce a ‘larger
than life book’ of their
Life and Journey – past –
present – and future. The
application for funding
is being put together by
Lyn McGoldrick & Dina Mihailidis and involves an established artist
( Conrad Black) working with the students starting in March
2011 for 20 weeks to produce this
artwork.
And speaking of art works, next
term some of the refugee art from
a few projects the students have
worked on will be featured around
the school. Please take the time to
have a look at them.
MULTICULTURAL CHOIR
The Multicultural Choir has a new name – ARUMA which is an aboriginal
word for happy or joyful which is exactly how they feel when
they sing. The choir has been practicing for the Gala Concert and
the students are looking forward to performing for the first time on
a big stage with the school orchestra.
As a special surprise for the students they have been given the opportunity
to sing with the choir of Hope & Inspiration (formerly the
Choir of Hard Knocks ) in Federation Square some time next term
which will be a wonderful achievement for them.
HOMEWORK CLUB
The homework club runs after school on Monday & Thursdays until
5pm and is staffed by RSC teachers and volunteers who kindly
give up some time in their busy day to assist the students with their
homework and other school work. As the homework club can be
very busy at times we are always looking for more volunteers. If you
can help out please let myself or Cathy Kinnear know it would be
much appreciated.
CONNECTED SUPPORT PROGRAM
This program is run my Kate Wilde a very experienced Youth Worker
and psychology undergraduate who comes to RSC once a week to
run these sessions. The program is designed to give the students
a ‘collective voice’ and to raise any issues they may have or concerns
they feel are important in a supported and informative environment.
The outcomes from this program will help identify where
the future support programs need to be focused.
CONNECTION LEADERS
Currently we have 15 connection leaders who will be working with
the refugee students to organise a variety of activities that will help
support and encourage the building of the relationships between
all students at Ringwood Secondary College
YOUTH LAW PROGRAM
Starting week two of term 4 - Youth Law will be running information
sessions for the students covering a whole range of issues and
topics that are relevant to young adults. They also provide a free
legal service for all young people in Victoria.
CONNECTION LEADERS
Congratulations to the Junior School Netball Championship players
for their fantastic effort on Thursday 2nd of September finishing
5th overall in the State. The girls finished top in their section during
the rounds and made it to the finals day last Thursday where they
missed out on completing in finals by 0.04%. A big thanks to the
parents that came to
support the girls and
score when needed
on both days. Well
done Madeline Wright,
TABLE TENNIS AND BADMINTON
This was the last year for our star Year 12 Boys table tennis team. Jeremy,
Huy, Jarrod and Chris made it to the state finals in five of their
six years at Ringwood. Apart from winning the state title in year
7, one of the highlights was having to play the grand final against
Melbourne High in a squash court because they didn’t book sufficient
time in the table tennis hall at MSAC. Thanks to the parents
for their support over the years and to the students for the excellent
manner in which they have represented the College.
As usual, the rest of our table tennis teams have won through to
Zone. The year 12 boys have also been excellent players for us in
badminton and it has been a pleasure to watch their progress since
year 7. Our Year 7 girls team performed best of our other badminton
teams, missing out on Zone finals by only a few points. Well
done to all our players who have demonstrated enthusiasm and
sportsmanship in representing our College.
DISTRICT ATHLETICS : ‘SIXPEAT’!
The Maroondah District Athletics were held at the Ringwood Athletic
Track at the end of August and Ringwood athletes rose to the
occasion to win our sixth successive District Championship. We got
off to a great start in the first events of the day when Adam Percy
and Shannon McDade
finished first in their
respective 3000m
events, and the results
continued to get better
as the day progressed.
After the first progressive
points score which
announced that Ringwood
held a solid 90
point lead, it continued
to grow until the
final score showed Ringwood had won by a whopping 576 points
from Norwood with Heathmont a further 16 points adrift. Apart
from the grand aggregate, Ringwood also won the other 6 pennants
on offer.
A feature of the day was the fantastic team effort that saw many
first placings, but also many athletes who pushed themselves to
personal bests in striving for a few extra points. It was also great
to see the large number of students who willingly volunteered to
fill events where our competitors were absent or injured. A spe-

Maddy Tucker, Nick Iliov, Blake Van Leeuwen, Sarah Battersby,
Brooke Tregenza, Zoe Couper, Tristan Blizzard, Olivia Haupt, Brenda
One very promising statistic was the effort of our 13 boys and
13 girls who both won 8 of the 12 individual events in their age
group.
Our winning relay teams were:
13 Girls: Claudia Sheers, Abby Couper, Ruby Haupt & Amy Benifer
Bond for their help in training
the team.
EASTERN ZONE FINALS
Our last zone finals for term 3 saw the year 7 girls netball teams
and the year 7 girls badminton team involved. The Netball A team
qualified in their pool and then won their semi final before losing
narrowly in the final to finish Zone runners up. The netball B team
finished third in their pool. The badminton team won one game to
also finish third in their pool of four.
Next term, the last of the Zone finals will be played with our remaining
summer finalists along with our district winners from term 3
sport to be involved.
WINTER SPORT
Last week, over 100 of our year 7 students participated in the District
round robin. The Boys A Basketball, Girls B Basketball and the
Boys and Girls Table Tennis teams all won their respective competitions.
Thanks to Miss Wyatt, Mr Porter, Mr Craig, Mr Simkins and Mr
Mental Health Week
Next week 13th-16th of September is Mental Health Week. Each
day has a separate theme to encourage students and staff to prioritize
their own mental health and to do something to promote
their wellbeing. Each lunchtime the school will run games, activities,
prizes, competitions and giveaways.
HAYFEVER
Matthew Porter
It is now September and the beautiful spring weather should soon
be upon us but a lot of people commonly suffer from hay fever at
this time of the year.
Hay fever can occur all year round but it is traditionally worse in the
Spring months when the pollen count in the air is high.
Hay fever is a common name for allergic rhinitis – meaning an allergy
in the nose. The allergic reaction causes the nasal passages to
become inflamed and produce more mucous.
Some of the common symptoms are : sneezing; runny or stuffy
nose; itchy ears ,nose and throat; red, itchy and watery eyes and
sometimes headaches.
Tips to try and reduce hay fever symptoms:
1: Stay indoors where possible on windy and stormy days
2: Smear Vaseline on the inside of your nose to help stop the airborne
pollen touching the lining of your nose.
3: Splash your eyes often with cold water as this tries to flush out
any pollen.
4: Try and reduce contact with known allergens eg – pet fur, flowers,
dust etc..
Anti-histamine medications in the form of tablets, nasal sprays and
eye drops may help alleviate symptoms but you need to discuss
this with your doctor or pharmacist.
Young people who get very little sleep are much more likely to become
mentally ill, Australian research shows.
Lack of sleep might help explain the puzzling increase in mental illness
among young people over the past decades, said the research
leader, Nicholas Glozier.
He suggested late-night internet use might be one reason young
people were sleeping less.
The study of about 20,000 people aged between 17 and 24 found
those who slept less than five hours a night were three times more
likely than normal sleepers to become psychologically distressed in
the next year.
Each hour of sleep lost was linked to a 14 per cent increased risk of
distress.
“Sleep disturbance and in particular insomnia is a predictor of later
development of depression and possibly anxiety,” said Professor
Glozier.
UNIT 4 HOLIDAY & TERM 4 EXAM REVISION CLASSES
The MEC Senior School Provision Group has organised a broad range of revision sessions for senior students. Many coalition
teachers from across the coalition are providing revision sessions to assist their own and other schools’ students in preparing for
final examinations. We can all acknowledge their contribution at the school level by encouraging VCE students to attend the
sessions relevant to their areas of study. Year 11 students studying a Unit 4 subject are also encouraged to attend.
