The end of the year is fast approaching and it is our expectations
that all students should be working hard to complete the required
work and achieve results that demonstrate improvement and personal
bests.
A key event on the calendar will be our annual Presentation Night
to be held on Tuesday December 20th. Due to the late finish of
the school year and the unavailability of alternative venues the
program will be staged at Ringwood Secondary College and will
include a number of new and innovative elements. Invitations will
commence being forwarded shortly with academic awards notified
in early December.
The next Newsletter will be issued on 11 November

The end of October was a great time for many of our students. A
couple of highlights were:
• Our Athletics Team finished runners up in the State The sports
pages detail the fantastic results.
• The Band Tour to East Gippsland. The spirit of the week was captured
in this great interview on ABC Regional radio http://www.abc.
Finally you may be aware that there is currently a significant Federal
Government review of schools funding. The outcomes of the review
represent an opportunity to increase funding for our government
schools. The review report is due early next year and final submissions
end in December. Ringwood
Secondary College Council had
made a submission on behalf of our
community to the Gonski Review
and there is a further opportunity
next week on Tuesday November
15 to go to www.forourfuture.org.
au and have your own say about the
importance of better funding for
government schools.
THAILAND 2011
What a great visit it was! For two and half weeks families hosted,
shared and laughed.
Many thanks to Wayne Houben for driving to Sorrento, Queenscliffe,
accompanied
by Simone Hobbs
and to Phillip Island,
to Mervat Elkassaby
PREFECT NOMINATION, VOTING AND TRAINING
Nominations close 11th November
Voting takes place 22nd November
Training will be after the Year 11 Examinations
All Year 11’s are urged to be involved
The Christmas Card for RSC this year
is a tribute to the artistic talents of
Zoe Blain, Year 12. We are thrilled
to acknowledge student art work
each year
through their final year and to
beyond is an awesome privilege.
HERITAGE
How the year has flown! Promotion of Bollard Plaques is a high priority
for 2012 and the commemorative etchings and material will
be finalized soon.
The recent induction of Emily Granland (nee Hoskins) to the Arts
Hall of Achievement completed the year in recognizing ex student
success.
We appeal to staff, students and families who may have items significant
to our ongoing history and legacy to pass them to the Heritage
Committee. Our archivist, Terry Kane, is ever keen to locate
photos, work books from the past – especially the 70’s, to record
our history.
A second appeal is for people to join with us, to be part of the past
working with present to engender links to the future. Meetings are
twice per term with extra special events and the occasional working
bee. Please contact the college
YEAR 7-10 WORK SUBMISSIONS POLICY
At the recent School Council meeting a Year 7-10 Work Submissions
Policy was endorsed for implementation. A copy will be included in
the Student Diary in 2012, in year level handbooks and on the website.
The policy outlines the college’s high expectations of students
around completion and submission of work; and consequences
when this does not happen.
SEMESTER 2 REPORTS
A reminder that with end of year exams and common tests fast approaching,
all students should be revising their semester’s work
and preparing for this test period. A regular pattern for study and
revision at home is essential to enable adequate preparation.
Over the next few weeks, teachers will be finalising assessment
tasks and writing the Semester 2 reports. It is important that students
remain focused in class, and ensure they meet deadlines set
by their teachers for completion of all school work. Students should
be writing relevant details in their school diaries to assist them in
managing their time effectively at this busy stage of the year.
From Mr Salisbury ...
FINISHING THE YEAR WELL
Mrs J. Hughes
Assistant Principal
The number of weeks before final examinations is fast disappearing
and year 12 students are of course now in the middle of their examination
period. Every student from Years 7-12 will have some exams
this term and preparation is the key to success. Students should sit
down with parents and devise a study timetable. Revise courses
topic by topic, write summaries and commit as much as possible
to memory. Practice old exams, complete set revision and don’t
be afraid to ask teachers for additional assistance. I would strongly
encourage all students to be working at full capacity in class and
ensuring all assessments are completed in a timely manner.
NATIONAL SCHOOL CHAPLAINCY AND STUDENT WELFARE
PROGRAM-CONTINUATION OF SERVICE-
As you are probably aware, Ringwood Secondary College has the
services of a Chaplain, Mr Adam Bryant, who works at the College
3 days per week. Adam has had this role for 3 years, funded primarily
by the Federal Government. Recently, changes to the funding
model were introduced under the program’s new title The National
School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program. It builds on the
existing National School Chaplaincy Program by funding continuing
Chaplaincy services, establishing new chaplaincy services and
offering welfare services. The major changes include a change of
title, choice of support workers and minimum qualifications. Under
the new model, schools with existing Chaplaincy services are requested
to confirm community support, particularly from parents,
before receiving ongoing funding. It is important to note that the
Chaplaincy Program is not related to ongoing discussions around
primary school religious education. Further information on the new
program may be found at www.deewr.gov.au/schooling/Pages/default.aspx
The college is seeking parent feedback on the Chaplaincy program
at Ringwood and a group of randomly selected parents have been
mailed information including a feedback sheet to be returned to
the college. All parents are welcome to provide feedback and a
good starting point is to discuss Chaplaincy at Ringwood with your
child to gain his/her feedback.
Please feel free to email me with your thoughts.
WORKING BEE
In anticipation, thanks to the many parents who attended our
Working Bee on Friday 11th November. We mulched large areas of
the school in preparation for summer and the school gardens are
looking quite lovely. A special thank-you to the facilities committee
for all their dedication throughout the year. We have made significant
improvements over recent years and much of the progress is
due to the committee’s vision and commitment to improving the
teaching and learning environment at Ringwood.
SOCCER FIELD WORKS
We are soon to commence further works on improving the surface
of the soccer field and hope to top dress and laser-level the field
next week, followed by the planting more sprigs.
SAFETY TRAVELLING TO AND FROM SCHOOL
A reminder that the college strongly discourages students from
travelling through the Ringwood Lake environs to and from school.
Please be very careful using the traffic island near the railway line
and if possible cross at the pedestrian crossing. Finally, bus travellers
offloading at the top of Great Ryrie Rd are requested to walk
down Great Ryrie Rd well away from the bus before crossing cautiously.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
This past Friday the college conducted a Remembrance Day service.
Congratulations and thanks to Luke Grundy, Alex Pezzimenti,
James Middlemast and Christie Lay for their role in reading to the
whole school and Louisa Becker for playing the last post. Students
treated the occasion with tremendous respect and are always genuinely
interested in knowing of and paying homage to those who
PARENT DROP OFF AND PICK UP
Main entrance-No entry: 8.30am-9.15am and 3.00pm-3.30pm
Parents are requested to not drive into the main entrance after
8.30am to drop students off for school. It is far too crowded and
dangerous. Similarly, please do not enter this area before 3.30pm
in the afternoon.
UNIFORM
During recent weeks staff have taken significant steps to improve
student adherence to school uniform. All classes with the exception
of Year 7, were visited on several occasions and detentions issued.
99% of students are now doing the right thing and the overall uniform
is vastly improved. Thank-you to parents for supporting us in
this very important direction and a reminder that we do not give
uniform passes for several weeks towards the end of the year. Ringwood
is a uniform school and students are expected to be in full
uniform every day.
PCTA REPORT
Recently the PCTA conducted its annual meeting and office bearers
for 2012 were appointed. Congratulations to Vanessa Bentall (President),
Tracey Howell (Vice-President), Meredith Anderson (Secretary)
and Stephen Dare (Treasurer). It is a vibrant committee and
any parents interested in joining should contact Mr Salisbury. I also
take this opportunity to thank all members of the PCTA for their enthusiasm,
hard work and commitment throughout 2011. They have
organised and assisted with several key college functions and as a
committee play a key role in enhancing and sustaining our great
sense of community spirit at Ringwood Secondary.
CATCH UP DETENTIONS
To ensure students are completing homework and assignments
we are running a series of after school catch up classes during the
last few weeks of term 4 on Wednesdays from 3.20pm to 4.20pm.
Students who have not handed in major pieces of work and/or are
not working productively in class will be expected to attend one
of these sessions. Parent notices will be posted out, providing at
least 24 hours notice. Your support as parents in this area is greatly
appreciated.
Mr C. Salisbury
Assistant Principal
This report will now be taken by council and used as a key part of
writing the new Strategic Plan, which will outline the direction of
the school for the next four years.
Other smaller discussions around the new Chaplaincy program and
RTTF Funding were heard, along with some excellent Ringwood results
from the State Athletics.
The Year Levels...
SUPPORTIVE FRIENDS TRAINING
On the 4th of November we, a select group of year 10 students undertook
training to become
Year 11 Supportive friends
for the year 7’s of 2012. Our
group of students is training
to help the year 7’s settle in
to the rush of high school
life. We have learned about
our responsibilities, conflict
management, running activities
and how we can become
leaders that can handle the
challenges that the year 7’s will make us face. Year 11 coordinator
Mr. Porter and school social worker Julia Nordlinger have been
training us in all aspects of what we will need to learn and what we
can do in situations. High school life is some of the best years of
your life but when you are not comfortable and have no one there
with you it can become a struggle to have the motivation to go to
school and that is why we are here to help them with any questions
they have, and to broaden their friendship groups. The year 7’s year
will be one of the best with us!
Luke Thomas 10C
School Council Report
The council meeting on the 26th October had a strong focus on the
recent school review with a presentation by reviewer, Peter Cole.
This type of school review is undertaken every few years. Peter’s
role was to collate various data from test scores, interviews and parent,
student and staff Opinion surveys, to ultimately compare Ringwood
Secondary College to the benchmark of other ‘like-schools.’
Doing this allows us to measure the achievements of the school,
and identify areas to improve for continued success. His report focused
on three key areas: Student Learning, Student Engagement/
Wellbeing, and Student Pathways/Transition. On the whole, Peter
found that our school had achieved pleasing results in all of these
areas.
His findings about Student Learning/Academic results showed that
Ringwood S.C students were consistently above state averages
and within the expected range of like schools. This was attributed
to strong student motivation and connectedness to their school,
which was reinforced by staff surveys. The schools extensive extra
curricular program, including performing arts, music and sport was
also pivotal in helping achieve these results. Following this, students
were found to have very good connectedness to peers, and
likewise, staff was positive with their workplaces.
Peter recommended that the school establish an agreed and consistent
practice for teachers, in order to improve the lower levels
of engagement between staff and students. He suggested some
practical techniques which may be taken on by staff, which could
be easily implemented to improve this aspect.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH FIRST AID TRAINING
Participating in the Basic First Aid
course for Duke of Ed was really
quite enjoyable. We learned
about how to perform CPR by using
DRSABCD and practiced this
on dolls. We learned what to do
if we happened to find someone
unconscious and how to act efficiently
in order to help the person
and in some cases even save
a life. Shirley McInnes (the college
nurse who ran the course)
was very friendly, informative
and was a great help if you were
having any trouble or didn’t understand
something.
I’m really glad that I was given
the opportunity to take this
course. I now have a fairly strong
understanding on basic first aid
and I now feel a lot more confident
to perform basic first aid on someone if I ever needed to.
Sustainability showcase
It was a wonderful spectacle in the hall as rows of 3D models were
displayed to represent students’ understanding of sustainability.
Team work, attention to detail and pride in their work were all evident
as students surveyed and peer assessed each others’ models.
It was an impressive display which could not have been possible
without the guidance of Visual Communication staff. Thank you to
all for making the Sustainability project, and particularly the showcase,
a great success. Enjoy the photos on the front of our newsletter.
MULTIMEDIA COMPETITION
With the creation of a superhero named Global Powers who teaches
students about sustainability, the winners of the Multi media competition
entitled Act Locally, Think Globally are Rachel McIsaac and
Georgia Denham. The video was creative, instructional and good
fun. A special mention goes to Louise Platts who was runner up for
her presentation.
PHOTO COMPETITION- LETTUCE GROWING
Students have been given the challenge to nurture and grow their
own lettuces at home. They made a recycled cylinder and were provided
with soil and lettuce seeds.
Towards the end of the term, they will be given the opportunity
to show how well their lettuce has grown by sending a photo. The
student with the healthiest looking lettuce will win a prize.
State Schools Convention
On October 17th, Mitchell
Pirera and I travelled into to
the Victorian State Parliament
with Mr. Jamieson to
contribute to a debate on
Australia’s energy future.
This day began with an inspirational
speech from the
Federal Greens MP, Adam
Brandt, and then 15 representatives
from other invited
schools gave a speech on their own perspective of the energy
debate. We then proceeded into having morning tea and broke up
into groups to discuss a pre-chosen topic on creating a solution to
Australia’s energy issues. The day
continued with a lunch break
where we had an Indian feast and
then continued with the group
presentations and finished with
speeches from Daniel Andrews,
leader of the opposition in Victoria.
Overall the day was really
interesting and a great life experience
for us both. We both are
applying to have the opportunity
to follow this convention with an all expenses paid trip to Canberra
to participate in the Federal Schools Convention at Federal Parliament
in March next year.
First Aid
A few weeks ago we spoke about sleep and how VITAL sleep is to
our wellbeing, another essential ingredient to our health is eating
HEALTHILY.
The right diet can –
• Maintain healthy body weight
• Improve sleep patterns
• Gain greater concentration levels
• Protect and assist in the treatment of some illnesses
Foods have been divided into 3 groups - sometimes called a food
pyramid.
Group 1: Eat these foods most of the time
These are all foods that come from plants and lots of vitamins,
minerals and fibre. Eat a variety of all foods in this group to stay
healthy.
• Fruits & Vegetables
• Breads
• Grains like rice and pasta
• Beans & Lentils
Group 2: Eat these foods in moderation
These foods provide protein which helps builds strong bones and
muscles and also helps our body heal when we have injured ourselves.
• Dairy products such as milk, cheeses and yoghurts
• Lean meats
• Chicken
• Fish
• Nuts
Group 3: Eat these foods occasionally
The food in this group often contains a lot of sugar and usually has
little nutritional value – no vitamins, minerals or fibre but usually
tastes yummy so is ok to have as a treat not all the time.
• Chips, lollies, cakes etc
• Ice-cream
It can be a challenge to eat correctly but a very simple recommendation
at the moment is the 2/5 rule – 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves
of vegetables a day.
It is also important to remain hydrated and have 6 – 8 glasses of
water a day.
BUGSY MALONE - 2011 JUNIOR PRODUCTION
Please email Christine Ross
or Melissa Bennett mbennett@
ringwoodsc.vic.edu.au if you
would like to be sent a reminder
of this date so that you don’t
miss out in this once in a lifetime
opportunity.
The junior students of Ringwood are taking to the stage once more
in an action packed and extremely messy presentation of Bugsy
Malone.
Bugsy is your typical New York wiseguy of the 1920s. Always looking
for a quick buck, he finds himself doing odd jobs for Fat Sam Stacetto,
and quickly embroiled in the middle of a terrifying gang war involving
custard pies and splurge guns. With catchy songs, splastick and goofy
gags, Bugsy Malone is sure to capture the imagination of all ages.
See the attached booking flyer and head to:
www.trybooking.com/ZSW – open from Monday November 14 – to
secure your tickets.
Go on – splurge yourself.
Ben Moody
Director of Performing Arts
Students are looking forward to performing a routine at presentation
night that they have been preparing with Lana. It will be a fantastic
way to end the school year.
On behalf of Ringwood Secondary College, I would like to say congratulation
and well done to all the students who participated in
the aerobics program for 2011 and we hope that your daughters
have had a great experience, made many friends and had lots of
fun. I appreciate the parent support in bringing the girls to training
sessions and to competitions.
If you are interested in joining the 2012 aerobics team, please come
and see me early in 2012 for a fantastic year of excitement, fitness
and good fun.
KICKING GOALS IN 2012!
Keep an eye out for the new aluminium goal posts that will be installed
on the redeveloped oval later this term. For the first time we
will now have goals at both ends of the ground and in the correct
location for the relocated oval. The purchase of these goal posts
has been made possible through a subsidy provided by AFL Victoria
and the school would like to thank AFL Victoria and specifically
Trevor Robertson who have assisted the school with this exciting
addition.
Art and Technology Show and the Induction of Emily Granland (nee Hoskins) to the
Arts Hall of Achievement
For the first time this prestigious event was staged in the RTTF.
After days of preparation a wonderful display of student artistic and creative
endeavour was on show. Items of craftsmanship in Woodwork stunned
spectators, Media clips enthralled an audience, Textile fabrications amazed
families and the art work – well. From design impressions and skilled renditions
in Visual Communication to free flowing watercolours and works of an
impressionistic nature – the visual Arts array rivalled and art gallery.
Our appreciation also to the musicians who complimented the evening and
the display of work folios, especially in Food Technology, attested to student
diligence and commitment. Peter Anderson and his team created a masterpiece.
The induction of Emily Granland to the Arts Hall of Achievement by the Principal,
Michael Phillips, proved the 4th Hall induction of the college’s Heritage
Group. Emily officially opened the show and spoke re her role in media.
TERM 4 ACTIVITIES
Unit 3 & 4 Exam Revision Sessions:
VCE examination revision classes were held in
the holidays and after school during Weeks 1 and
2 of Term 4. Thirty-seven teachers, from six
MEC schools, offered revision sessions to assist
students with examination preparation. Students
had access to twenty-three different VCE subjects
and attendance over the revision period was very
pleasing – a fantastic way to start off their exam
preparation.
The MEC Senior School Provision Group would
MEC Dance Out Event – October 22 nd
The Inaugural ‘Dance Out’ event was a new and exciting
opportunity for our coalition students to improve and
showcase their dance skills. This event was a fantastic start to
future MEC activities for students who have an interest in the
Performing Arts. Students were able to access workshops run
by professional dancers during the day and they also had the
opportunity to participate in the evening performance. The
event was well attended by MEC school community
members, who were treated to an array of energetic and
skilful solo, duet and group performances.
At the end of the night, all participants were acknowledged
for their contributions, with awards given under specific
categories.
Many thanks to Maroondah SC for hosting this event, and to
the Dance teachers from Croydon, Parkwood, Maroondah
and Ringwood Secondary Colleges, for making this such a
rewarding experience for our students. We look forward to
