The past few weeks have really been focused on revision, common
tests and exams which are now behind us. Our Year10 students
will be undertaking work experience during the last week of term.
The coming holiday break is an opportune time for students to
recharge the batteries and to set goals for the second half of the
year.
The term concludes at 2.30pm on Friday June 29 and Term 3
commences on Monday July 16. Reports for Years 11 & 12 will be
distributed next week and Years 7-10 at the end of the first week of
term three.
Last week two Keith Hollingsworth scholarships from the Maroondah
Daylight Lodge were presented to both a Year 9 and Year 10
student- Chantal and Freya in recognition of their achievement,
effort and involvement at Ringwood Secondary College. The scholarships
valued at $250 each are named after Keith Hollingsworth
who had an extensive involvement in education in the Ringwood
area. His granddaughter Roxanne Funston was a very successful
student here and hence the reason the scholarships have been
directed here.
Bright and early on Thursday morning we held our Sporting Hall of
Fame breakfast. This year’s inductees were former students Natalie
Yates and Michelle Waterson. Both young women have competed
successfully at multiple Australian and World Championships in
the sport of Cheerleading. A combination of Aerobics, Gymnastics
and Dance, this high-energy sport has experienced rapid growth
over the past five years.
Our guest speaker was Monette Russo a former Olympic gymnast.
Her Career highlights included: Australian Junior Gymnast
of the Year 2003; finalist for Australian Female athlete of the year
2005;Australian Gymnast of the year 2005; first ever Australian
gymnast to win an individual World Championship medal,
when she placed 3rd in the all around at the 2005 world champs;
member of the first Australian team to win a team medal at World
Champs, winning a bronze in 2003; won team gold at the 2006
Commonwealth games and an individual bronze on the bars.
It was a beaut morning and it was great to share with many current
students, heritage group members, parents, staff and other
members of the Sporting Hall of Fame.
There is currently a big push to encourage the Federal government
to introduce legislation into parliament to enable the recommendations
of the Gonski report for better funding of public
education to be implemented as soon as possible. In terms of
Ringwood Secondary College, it would mean at least $600,000 additional
recurrent funding per annum if fully implemented using
2009 figures.
VCE EXAMINATIONS
Finally, I am pleased to announce that Zoe Blain our college dux
from 2011 will next week receive a VCE Premiers Award for being
one of the top 5 students in the state for Media.
Michael Phillips
Principal
From Mr Salisbury ..
The reporting season is in full swing and well done to those students
who met the large number of deadlines this time of year
brings and prepared diligently for assessment tasks. As is often
said around the College, “You’ll get what you deserve!”
The feedback from our external supervising team was that all our
students conducted themselves with maturity, engagement and
a real appreciation for the sense of occasion. Please congratulate
your sons/daughters for their efforts during this busy time. Further,
teachers have spent many hours preparing the examinations,
marking of same and providing feedback for all their classes. Their
hard work and dedication cannot be underestimated.
VCE mid year results are due for release on Monday, 6th of August.
Students that sat Psychology, Accounting, Physics, Biology and
Chemistry will have their results released to them in a sealed envelope,
respecting the confidentiality of this process.
Some other points:
• Year 9 Community Service-Well done to our Year 9 students who
have recently completed community service projects around the
school. It’s a great part of the Challenge program, creating ownership
and pride in our school environment. This year every student
planted a small flowering plant and the additional colour around
the school looks fantastic.
• Traffic report-Please encourage your children to be careful if
crossing Bedford Rd, particularly if they use the traffic island east
of the railway line. On several occasions it has been over-crowded
and groups of students are spilling dangerously onto Bedford Rd
in front of cars. Thank you to the many parents who are parking
a little distance away from the College to facilitate traffic management
before and after school. We encourage more parents to
utilise this practice.
• Facilities report: Currently we are improving the Drama room
(403) to provide a more user- friendly space. New blinds, curtains,
much needed carpentry and painting will hopefully transform
this old space into a dynamic Performing Arts space. Similarly, the
library will have new tables and additional computers, providing
improved resources for students.
Mr C. Salisbury
Assistant Principal
HOMESTAY FAMILY REQUIRED
We are seeking interest from any families who may be interested
in hosting a male Physical Education student teacher from the
USA during Term 4. The placement will commence on 22 October
through to Friday, 14 December. Of course, if several families
are interested we could organise a shared arrangement for part
of the time only. Please contact me for more details.
Mrs . J Hughes
Assistant Principal
As the term break approaches, VCE students are reminded to maintain
their study habits over the two weeks that they’re not required
for formal classes. The advice is to keep working on assignments,
SATs, SACs, folios, revision and preparation – of course, there is also
a need to rest and recharge and sensible, personal management is
required.
Mr J. Barut
Assistant Principal
From Mrs McGoldrick..
We are approaching the finishing line of a long and busy term that
has had a strong focus on student achievement through regular
subject assessment tasks, NAPLAN testing, Common Tests and Semester
1 reports.
The Junior School team would like to congratulate the majority of
Year 7 and 8 students who have been trying to do their best in all
facets of school life. Semester 1 reports is one way that students
show a commitment to their learning and excellence in this area
will be acknowledged in early Term 3.
Students also show their commitment to our College wide values
through actions that display respect for self, others and the environment.
To acknowledge these positive
behaviours, the Junior School introduced
a Community based competition
that encompassed three areas
– wearing of correct school uniform,
‘Random Act of Kindness’ awards and
‘Inspirational Speeches’. Form captains
were invited to determine the
activity for the winning Year 7 and 8
communities and this event will occur
in Week 11. To date we have the
following community totals showing
that it is a close contest with less than two weeks to go.
• Mr Kent’s community (7A, 7C and 7G) – 226 points
• Mr Tucker’s community (7B, 7E and 7F) – 231 points
• Mrs Keenan’s community (7D, 7H and 7I) – 227 points
• Mr Hugh’s community (8B, 8H and 8E) – 232 points
• Mrs Capelli’s community (8A, 8G and 8I) – 227 points
Page 3
Newsletter Number 7 June 22, 2012
• Mr McKay’s community (8C, 8D and 8F) – 244 points
Congratulations to Michael Owen, Kira Coghlan and Kaylah Tobias
who earned 5 community points by giving a speech about an inspirational
person at a combined Junior assembly. In addition, other
students have been awarded community points by showing ‘Random
Acts of Kindness’ towards both their peers and teachers.
The Community competition will continue in Semester 2 to encourage
cooperative and thoughtful behaviour within our college environment.
To foster empathy and respect
for people from other
cultures and backgrounds,
a special assembly for Year
7 and 8 students has been
organised for Monday June
25th from 9.00 – 9.30am.
Students will listen to the
journey of refugee people
who have come to Australia –
which should be an enlightening
experience for most.
Parents are most welcome
to attend this event. Please
phone the general office if
you would like to attend.
Report From College Council
Many items of interest were discussed at the most recent meeting
of College Council. Here are just a few examples:
• Progress Report of the Annual Implementation Plan – it was pleasing
to see exactly how much work is being done by college teaching
staff on the Key Improvement Strategies that form the AIP. Some
examples of action items discussed were: Development of a whole
school plan for improvement in the Literacy and Numeracy skills
of students, Preparation for the implementation of the Australian
Curriculum, Improve student attendance, Continue to improve the
College’s careers program and build the capacity of teachers to improve
student outcomes.
• RSC is once again shown to be a college of choice for many families
with a high number of applications for entry into Year 7 in 2013
similar to previous years.
• The Facilities Committee has numerous projects underway at
present – Improvements to library facilities, planning for the construction
of a Technology Room and a Disability Facility, improvements
in the Drama Room, general garden improvements via the
Year 9 Environment Program. We are very fortunate to have such an
active committee which constantly strives to improve the buildings
and grounds.
For parents of Year 7 students,
Trudy Brentnall has organised iPad workshops during June,
August and September. The brochure is attached to the newsletter.
A copy of the brochure and payment information has also been
emailed via our parent distribution lists. Copies are also available
from the General Office or email Trudy Brentnall at Brentnall.
The Junior School team would like to wish College community
members a relaxing and safe holiday.
Mrs . L McGoldrick
Assistant Principal
Chaplain Report
Well, winter is here and it’s time to fire up the heater, find the rain
jackets, make sure the umbrella is still working and pull out the ugg
boots. I can never get used to the cold snap. It always catches me
off guard. I reckon one of the hardest things to do when it’s cold
is get out of bed, you just want to roll over and catch a few extra
minutes of sleep. But despite all the coldness there can be something
very special about winter. Winter can force us to stay inside
at times.
Despite the fact that it stops us getting on
top of things like the garden or the washing
it can keep us inside with our family. So
take the time to make the most out of the
wintery months because before you know
it spring time will be here once again
Adam Bryant
• A great response to the performance by 37 members of the 2012
RSC Production “Sweet Charity” Cast at the Life Education Gala last
Saturday evening. The students did an amazing job and were a
credit to themselves, their families and the College community.
• The RTTF (Ringwood Trade Training Facility) Steering Committee is
working towards ensuring that this facility can continue to develop
programs and opportunities for students wishing to participate
in trade training. The current situation with reduced Government
funding for TAFE Institutions is likely to have some positive outcomes
for the RTTF.
Duke of Edinburgh – Gembrook Camp
7th – 8th June
Below are some highlights from the recent year 9 Duke of Edinburgh
camp that was held at Gilwell Park in Gembrook. Activities
included abseiling, initiatives, open camp fire cooking, trivia and a
commando course.
Kimberley Hall
Overall cooking on the fires was a success but the nutrition lacked a
little bit. It also depends on your
fire because some people didn’t
have enough hot coals to cook
on so it took longer. Most of the
groups had healthy meals but
for breakfast there was a lot of
bacon going around.
Isabella and Sienna
Page 4
Newsletter Number 7 June 22, 2012
The initiative course was a series of physical challenges, such as ropes,
giant see-saw, Tarzan rope and jumping boxes, we needed to work as a
team to complete each challenge as a group. In our group many of us
slipped and face planted, but we had good teamwork and we finished
the course in great timing. The challenges improved our teamwork and
leadership skills and we had fun and enjoyed it.
Jasmine and Jemmimah
The bus ride home consisted of passing around left over food and a
tone deaf choir, accompanied by some sick tunes on the guitar. Brooksy
showed some serious vocal talent and Darcy performed every singalong
song you could think of.
Darcy and Courtney
The commando course was a massive and intense 1 kilometre course
that tested your teamwork skills with a monkey bar set and a cement
tunnel that you needed to climb up, it also tested your agility and
flexibility and how well you can deal with smelly water. The hardest
obstacle was the straddle where you had to straddle a pole and slide
uphill on it without touching the ground, the easiest was the running
through the tyres where you had to put your feet in each tyre, the grossest
one was crawling trough waist deep muddy, smelly water under a
cage dodging submerged tyres but it was a fun activity that was worth
doing!
Emma
The camp was not all about
building fires and crawling
through muddy, mesh cages
on a commando course. We all
participated in a trivia night
and games in which everyone
was involved. The tasks ranged
from naming songs and artists,
to shoving as many lollies into
your mouth without gagging
or spitting them out. Overall, it
was a successful way of engaging in something a little different to your
general camping activities.
Max
Collecting the firewood was actually quite tricky; this is because up at
Gembrook all the leaves, sticks and pieces of wood were wet. To collect
the firewood we had to go walking down in the forest. When we
found dry firewood it was under trees that kept the firewood dry. Overall
everyone found firewood for the fires and the fires kept burning for
a while.
Jason
For archery we all took turns at shooting at the target. We learnt how
to release the arrow properly and improved our archery skills . It was
awesome fun!
DIVISION CROSS COUNTRY – NO SWEAT!
The Division Cross Country Championships were held at HE Parker
Reserve last Friday, and in a repeat of last years convincing win,
Ringwood dominated to win the Division Shield.
We managed to clean sweep the age divisions winning the junior
boys and girls division, the intermediate boys and girls divisions,
and the senior boys and girls division pennants.
The day started well with a great start by our 13yr boys and girls
which saw 7 girls and 5 boys progress through to the next level. This
resulted in a comfortable win of the team event. The 14yr boys managed
to progress 5 individuals through to the next round, while the
girls advanced 8 individuals, and also winning the team event. The
15 girls stole the show with all 10 individuals progressing, while the
boys managed to advance an impressive 7 RSC students. The rest
of the day continued on very smoothly with a further 17 boys and
17 girls progressing from the 16yr age category and the 20yr age
category. The lead grew steadily, resulting in Ringwood snaring its
6th consecutive title and 23 of the last 25 championships.
At the end of the day, 9 teams had won and a staggering 76 individuals
progressed to the next competition. Some other highlights
for the day included:
• Our under 13 boys clean sweep of their event winning the first 4
places.
• Our under 20 boys finishing with 7 in the first 10.
• Our under 15 girls progressing to all 10 individuals through to the
next level for that age category.
• 7 individual gold medal winners (out of a possible 10).
• The efforts of all of our runners to finish strongly and gain valuable
points for their team.
Our individual medal winners were:
Gold: Nathan Percy, Eden
Manuel-Farmer, Sally Blain,
James Sanchez-Legg, Luke
Percy, Clay Bryant and Veida
Somerville
Silver: Daniel Aye, Sinead
Thank you to all of the parents who came along to support our
team and a special thank you to the staff members who assisted
with training the teams and for helping out on the day.
ADIDAS FUN RUN – CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL
The Ringwood Secondary College Cross Country was also an Adidas
asked to raise money through sponsorship for their run. We would
like to extend a big thank you and congratulations to all those people
who returned their money forms.
Page 5
Newsletter Number 7 June 22, 2012
In particular we would like to
acknowledge our 2 highest
fundraisers, who were; Kaitlyn
Walker, and Jessica Dalboni.
Kaitlyn raised over $400 for
this event, while Jessica raised
over $130 alone. Congratulations
girls on a great achievement.
To all those individuals who raised over $10, your prizes are on the
way, and will be distributed when they arrive.
YOUNG SPORTING TALENT
Congratulations to year 7 student, Sophie Caldwell on being selected
in the Young Talent Squad of Swimming Victoria. Sophie is one
of 30 young swimmers chosen each year as part of the Swimming
Victoria development program. The program allows Sophie access
to coaching from some of Victoria’s best coaching staff, as well as a
possible future in the Victorian Institute of Sport. We congratulate
Sophie on this wonderful achievement.
SPORTING HALL OF FAME BREAKFAST
The Ringwood Secondary
College Sporting
Hall of Fame Breakfast
was held on the 21st
of June where past students,
Michelle Waterson
and Natalie Yates,
were inducted into the
Hall.
Both girls have won Victorian and Australian
Championships in cheerleading
and have competed internationally,
with Natalie and Michelle placing 10th
in the World in 2009 and Michelle placing
6th in 2009.
Thank you to all staff, students and
parents that battled through the wintry
morning to attend, and also to the
canteen ladies for providing a fantastic
breakfast. This year’s guest speaker was
Monette Russo, Olympian, Commonwealth and World Championship
medallist, who spoke of the perseverance and determination
required to succeed in sport and life. A big thank you to Monette for
giving up her time to speak at this year’s breakfast.
JUNIOR GIRLS FOOTBALL
The team competed earlier this term in the Division Round Robin,
Year 10
METEC Driver Training Centre excursion
On Wednesday the 23rd of
May, 54 excited and slightly
inexperienced Year 10’s took
to the roads of METEC in Bayswater
North.
During the day, they were
educated about road rules
and dangers on the road to
be aware of as well as driving
with a qualified driving
instructor around the course.
Students also had the opportunity
to sit for their Learners
Permit – congratulations
to those students who now
have their L-plates!
Careers..
Year 10 Work Experience
Work experience for Year 10 is in last week of term- Monday June
25th, for one week. We hope the Year 10’s have a wonderful experience
and that they utilized this time to explore career possibilities
or embrace other opportunities that may eventuate from this experience.
Students received a Work Experience Journal, at the Year 10 level
assembly, which contains vital information including an evaluation
form, a thank you certificate and notes on succeeding at Work Experience.
finishing runners up for the
GLOBAL GATHERING ACTIV-
ITY
On the 6th June eight of our
refugee students from across
years 7-10 attended a wonderful
day at the 5th annual
Global Gathering Multicultural
Forum organised largely by
Sharrin Murphy from Foundation
House.
Students from five other
schools around the district came together for a day of fun-filled activities
that included African drumming, martial arts painting, learning
about our emergency services and I think everyone’s favourite
….. a collection of Australian animals that the children could touch,
feed and hold.
These included a Saltwater Crocodile, Kookaburra, Bearded Dragon,
Blue Tongue Lizard and the scariest of all – a Python which the
students were invited to wrap around their necks and have their
photo taken.
While some of our students (and RSC staff) had to be persuaded to
join in this activity, everyone in the end had their photo taken with
the snake.
Thanks to Lyn McGoldrick for her assistance on the day.
HOMEWORK SUPPORT
The homework support club continues to run on Thursday’s after
school from 3.30 – 4.30 with a great many of our students attending
every week for help with their work. Jocelyn our tutor works very
well with the students and is ably supported by Bill and Lian our
Multicultural Education Aides. Many thanks also to Heather and
Lyn who give up their time to assist whenever they can, it is much
appreciated.
Coles Sports for Schools
Program
Once again this year we will be participating in the Coles Sports
for Schools program. Last year we managed to collect over 78,000
vouchers which allowed
us to receive over 40
sports balls, a table tennis
table, electronic whistles
and much more.
Vouchers are available in
all Coles stores from June
13 to August 14 and we ask that you get involved to help collect
vouchers for ourschool. For every $10 spent we will earn 1 voucher.
Students can bring the vouchers in as they collect them or they can
wait until the end of the competition and bring them all in at once.
Many thanks for your support.
This year, we have a special function for all ex students, staff and
parents who have been involved in previous productions. Following
the 4.30pm twilight show on Saturday August 9, there will be a
gathering in the library from 7 to 9 – a great opportunity to catch
up with friends from the past. You can book tickets to this function
for $12 by following the link on the main booking website. Remember
that you also need to purchase your ticket for the performance
separately. It would be great to see a diverse turnout representing
Australian Geography
Competition 2012
VCE Geography students from Ringwood Secondary College competed
in the National Geographic Channel Australian Geography
Competition at the end of last term. Approximately 80,000 students
from 774 schools entered the competition this year. As part of the
competition, students were required to demonstrate their knowledge
about global and local issues, with questions on recent natural
disasters, sustainable energy and countries in our region, as well
as using their geographic skills to interpret information through
statistics, maps and satellite images.
We have a number of student Geographers who performed at a
very high level, gaining impressive results in the senior level of the
competition. Over 1/3 (38%) of the Unit 3 Geography class gained
a High Distinction or Distinction. Statistics for this level across the
country are 20%. Nationally, it is only the top 11% who are awarded
a High Distinction at the senior level. It was very pleasing to see
23% of our Ringwood students attain that award. We would like to
congratulate the following students:
RSC NEW SOCIAL WORKER - KAREN HALLAM
My Name is Karen Hallam and I am wanting to introduce myself after
I recently accepted the
role of Social Worker at
RSC. Some staff, students
and parents may already
know me from my time
filling in the position (in
2009-2010) and also my
work in the careers office
over the past few years.
I will be in the Wellbeing
Centre each week
from Tuesday through
to Friday, although some hours will be spent continuing my one
on one support (via careers) for students who are at risk of failing,
struggling with the demands of school or considering leaving the
school.
I look forward to getting to know you all over the coming year and
beyond.
ON ANOTHER NOTE:
With the end of term fast approaching I am writing to request nominations
for the RADAR Award.
As you all know RADAR stands for ‘Respect and Diversity at Ringwood’,
so please have a think about any staff members and/or students
who you think have made a positive difference to the RSC
community this term.
• Have they helped out or supported a friend/colleague through a
difficult time?
• Have they gone above and beyond what is required of them for
the benefit of others?
• Have they had a positive influence in what could have been a very
negative situation?
• Have they been respectful of others who may have different views/
beliefs?
If so please send through nominations via email to myself or Sharlene
in the Welfare office by Thursday June 28th.
These nominations will be announced at an assembly early next
term and the final winner of the RADAR Award will receive a special
gift and be recognised at the end of the year ceremony.
