WELCOME BACK
I hope that all students enjoyed a relaxing break with their friends
and family. Term 4 is traditionally a very busy time at Ringwood as
we complete our college programs, write reports, attend presentation
ceremonies and undertake planning and preparation for the
2012 school year.
At last weeks college assembly I spoke to the students about the
importance of being focused on maximising opportunities for attaining
their best results during this important stage of the year.
It was also an opportunity to farewell and thank the Year 12 students
whose VCE exams commence on Thursday November 3rd
2011.
WORLD TEACHERS DAY
World Teachers’ Day on October 28th acknowledges the efforts of
teachers in an increasingly complex, multicultural and technological
society. It is a day on which students, parents and community
members can demonstrate their appreciation for the contributions
that teachers have made to their community.
I would encourage as many parents as possible to write a note of
appreciation to their children’s teacher(s), in recognition of their
tremendous contribution to the students.
FINAL DAYS FOR YEAR 12
Our Year 12 students are about to enter a vitally important stage
of their secondary schooling and if they have worked consistently
throughout the year they will be well placed to perform at their best
during the exam period. It was pleasing to note that many Year 12
students took advantage of opportunities provided by their teachers
over the Term 3 study break to complete set work and begin
the revision process.Thank you to our Year12 teachers for giving up
their vacation time to assist their VCE students.
The last formal day of classes for year 12 students will be 24th October.
On Wednesday October 26th the school will be supplying a
breakfast for year 12 students and their parents in the college hall
in recognition of the end of 13 years of schooling . A celebration day
has been planned for the previous morning.
We wish all our VCE students well during this important and often
demanding time.
From Mrs Hughes ...
SEMESTER 2 REPORTS
Although we have just commenced Term 4, end of year exams and
common tests will approach soon. This is a timely reminder that
all students should revise their semester’s work and preparing for
this test period. In particular, students need to ensure they keep
up-to-date with classwork, homework and major assessment tasks;
and ensure that work is submitted on time for correction. Students
should be writing relevant details in their school diaries to assist
them in managing their time effectively. A regular pattern for study
and revision at home is essential to enable adequate preparation.
Victoria Market, Sorrento Ferry
and Queenscliffe delighted all.
To the staff who have helped
in supporting activities the college
is appreciative and values
the time given.
UNIFORM
We are pleased that the vast majority of our students wear their
uniform correctly and with pride. Over the next few weeks we will
be having a blitz on uniform and there will be lunchtime detentions
for those students who choose to wear incorrect items, thus lowering
the tone of the school.
Mrs J. Hughes
Assistant Principal
From Mr Salisbury ...
• Our new Canteen shelter,‘The Hub’ is now complete and looks
sensational. Many thanks to the Facilities Committee who oversaw
the planning process, the PCTA for organising the walkathon and
of course students and families for raising approximately $10000
to go towards the project. It was a genuine community effort and
the eye-catching building will be a defining feature of the college
for many years to come. Our next stage is to build outdoor furniture
and hopefully replace the concrete surface throughout the area.
Enjoy the photos at the end of the newsletter.
• Year 8 Sustainability project- Knox Traders:
Many thanks to the Knox Traders for
speaking to our Year 8 students on Sustainability
and donating a beautiful ornamental
pear tree.
• Whole School assembly- On Friday 14, a
whole school assembly was held to welcome
students to the start of term 4, say goodbye
and thank-you to the Year 12 students and
to outline the importance of the next few weeks. All students will
be undertaking exams at some stage this term and we cannot stress
enough the importance of keeping up and preparing thoroughly
for assessment tasks. At the end of the day, all students should be
striving to do their best and fulfil their academic potential.
• Occupational Health and Safety- making our school a safe
place! Late term 3 the college received an OH & S audit to review
our progress in implementing the department’s O H & S Management
system. Overall we were pleased with the report, although
there are several areas requiring attention. In addition, we have
completed an amended Emergency Management Plan.
• Walkathon Prizes-These are currently being distributed to students
who raised large amounts
of money for this year’s walkathon.
Close on 200 students
raised in excess of $20 and we
were thrilled with the total of
$10000 for ‘The Hub’. Well done
to Jasmine Keats, Connor Scully
and Jordan Stainton who each
raised over $150.
And in the near future:
-fencing the East side of the school
-improving the surface of the soccer field
• Performance and Development: During week 4 of this term, all
staff will be involved in their final Performance and Development
meeting of 2011. Staff report on their progress and achievement of
yearly goals, established earlier in the year. I am constantly amazed
at the number of conversations around the school that are focussed
on improving the quality of our teaching and learning and extracurricular
programs. It all bodes well for the future!
Mr C. Salisbury
Assistant Principal
Chaplain Spot
So we are already being taunted by the “C” word - “Christmas”. For
some this creates a sense of excitement, for others a sense of dread.
I watched the movie “Click” on saturday,
starring Adam Sandler. It is basically
about a guy who is a workaholic trying
to make lots of money thinking it is best
for him and his family. He comes across a
universal remote that allows him to fastforward
and rewind different parts of his
life. As he fast forwards the mundane, everyday and unpleasant
moments he is shocked to discover what his life will amount to. He
ends up estranged from his family missing all their important moments
and dying alone from cancer and heart disease. Worse than
that he sees his son following his footsteps.
Often when I watch this movie and I contemplate the importance
of the things I say and the decisions I make about work commitments
and how that effects the everyday occurrences of life. I don’t
want to get to the end of my life not knowing my kids and wife
because I was too busy doing other things!! So instead of dreading
Christmas this year look at the opportunity that time is to make
positive memories that can stay with you and each of your family
members for a lifetime.
COSI
RSC’s first ever Middle School Play is now finished and was a big
success.
• Working Bee- Friday 11 Nov, 5.00pm – 7.30pm. Parents of forms
7G, 7H, 7I, 8G, 8H, 8I, 9G, 9H, 9I, 10G, 10H, 10I, 11G, 11H, 11I- You are
needed! This is your one and only designated working bee for 2011
and we would love to have your participation for whatever time
you can afford. Even popping in for an hour would be gratefully
appreciated. We hope to beautify several garden beds.
• Recent improvements to college grounds- Over recent weeks
we have seen several improvements to the college. These include:
-Completing the Canteen shelter area to be known as The Hub
-New kitchen cabinets in Student Services
-New cabinets in room 400
Page 4
The show was ‘Cosi’, a comedy about a young director who gets a
gig, directing a bunch of mental patients, in Mozart’s 3-hour epic
opera, ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’. Full of crazies, love and burning cats, ‘Cosi’ is a
play that can make the audience laugh and cry in one sitting.

Newsletter Number 12 October 21, 2011
I would like to congratulate and thank the entire cast on their amazing
effort and hard work. Doing a full-length play, such as ‘Cosi’ with
its strong themes and demands of comic timing is by no means and
easy feat. Over two big nights, the cast wowed the audience, keeping
them entertained and providing them with plenty of laughs.
I would also like to thank all of the staff and students who helped
out with the creation of ‘Cosi’ and to the amazing tech crew who
brought the show to life.
Thank you also to all of the staff, parents and family for attending,
your support was very much appreciated by the students.
One simple question (Does Ringwood ever put on any straight, non
musical productions?) has led to this. The support and encouragement
this project has received from the school has been unbelievable.
Everyone truly had great fun working on this and when we come
back next year, we hope to make it bigger and better than before,
turning this into an annual event in RSC’s already jam packed performing
arts program.
Michael Kent
JUNIOR PRODUCTION - ‘BUGSY MALONE’
This year’s Junior Production is Bugsy Malone. It will be performed
from December 16 through to December 19 and students from
Years 7 and 8 are initially invited to become involved. (Opportunities
for Year 9 students MAY arise following this.)
We saw Proboscis Monkeys, Silver Leafed Monkeys, Wild Boar, Pit Vipers,
Hermit Crabs, Macaques and all of their babies. We had several
encounters with these animals, including a hungry Macaque who
took off with a bag of chips.
The hikes through Bako were tough and hot but well worth it. There
were lots of plants and animals to see on the trails and the beaches
at the end were welcoming with warm water and lots of rocks to
explore.
We visited Semengoh Rehabilitation Centre and saw the Orangutans
and the babies in the trees. We arrived at feeding time to find
two mothers and their babies swinging through the trees towards
the feeding platforms. There were also a couple of younger orangutans
feeding and impressing us with their acrobatic skills through
the trees.
At the Sarawak Cultural Village, we saw how different tribes in
Sarawak live and some customs that they follow. The villages has
examples of the various types of housing that the Iban (Headhunters),
Orang Ulu, Bidayah, and Penan tribes live in. We saw a show of
cultural dancing and all joined in on stage at the end.
One night we stayed at Permai Rainforest Resort. In the morning,
we woke to find out that a snake had bitten Mr Porter when he was
out on his morning run. We drove back to Kuching while Mr Porter
had been taken earlier to the public hospital to be treated. Everything
was okay as the large python was non-venomous.
Auditions for the show will take place on Wednesday 2 and Thursday
3 November. Students will attend one of these sessions between
3.30 and 5.30pm. There is no need to prepare anything in advance
– all audition material will be learned at this session. Details of the
time commitment required will also be available at the audition.
Please note that the Junior Production operates on a very short and
intensive rehearsal period and requires students to commit fully to
the rehearsal and performance schedule.
We encourage any interested students to attend an audition and
become involved in this valuable experience. Students can register
for an audition by either emailing Mr Moody at bmoody@ringwoodsc.vic.edu.au
or signing up at the PAC Office. Please indicate if
you have a particular preference for either Wednesday or Thursday.
Borneo Trip 2011
By Courtney Smyth 9H
Ben Moody
Director of Performing Arts
Eight students and two teachers. Twelve days together in another
country. After a safe arrival in Kuching, via Kuala Lumpur, we were
all transported to the hotel to sleep before our first day.
In Kuching, we visited museums and cultural centres to learn about
living conditions, environment, history and the way of life for the
Malays and the different indigenous tribes. New and interesting
foods were tasted and much enjoyed. Everybody loved seeing the
locals in their community and the locals loved us too. They took
photos and waved at us as we walked past. We were lucky to join
in a game of soccer with them. Our Aussie boys lost with a score
of 6-4. Well played! The city of Kuching is decorative and colourful
with much to do, see and buy. Everybody loved our shopping opportunities
and made sure to grab some stuff to take home.
Our two night stay at Bako National Park was incredible. We were
so lucky to witness and experience the flora and fauna up so close.
We continued on, without Mr Porter and drove six hours plus a one
hour long-boat ride to the Iban Longhouse. We met the Chief and
joined in some dancing. The longhouse was more than fifty meters
long and was raised up off the ground with stilts. 308 people lived
there together.
After we had Mr Porter back with us, we visited the Matang Wildlife
Centre. It was phenomenal. We got up quite close to the animals
there and had the opportunity to make some enrichment toys for
the orangutans. The animals there were endangered and had been
victims of things that humans had done. Deforestation was a major
concern. We could see evidence of this wherever we drove as we
passed the hundreds of palm oil plantations.
Our last morning was an early one as we drove to Kuching airport
at five in the morning. We spent the day in Kuala Lumpur, visiting
the Batu Caves, Petronas Towers and shopping at the markets. We
arrived at the airport again and boarded our eight-hour flight for
Melbourne.
Over the week and a half that we were away, everybody grew so
close and formed new friendships. Everybody gained and learned
so much from the trip and we are all so glad that we had this
chance.
Top Work!
Elise Chasemore
Sports Coordinato
As the Year 12 approach the exams you will be given many tips for
your exams but a very IMPORTANT tip is ‘keep your regular sleep
routine’. This is because sleep is VITAL to your well being.
Not getting enough sleep can:
• Limit your ability to learn, listen, concentrate and solve problems.
• Make you more prone to pimples.
• Lead to aggressive or inappropriate behaviour such as yelling at
your friends or being impatient with your teachers or family members.
• Cause you to eat too much or eat unhealthy foods like sweets and
fried foods that lead to weight gain.
• Contribute to illness.
REGION FINALS
After winning Division round robins earlier in the year we have 9
teams this term competing in Region finals. These teams are:
Intermediate Boys Hockey
18th October
Intermediate Boys Basketball A 21st October
Intermediate Girls Hockey
24th October
Year 8 Table Tennis
26th October
Year 8 Girls Basketball B
28th October
Solutions:
• Make sleeping a priority – establish a routine, set a bedtime and
a wake-up time and stick to those times. Decide what you need to
change to get enough sleep for you to remain healthy.
• Make your room your haven, keep it dark and cool and free of
distractions.
• Naps can help but if they are too close to bedtime they can interfere
with your normal sleep.
Page 6

• Try and have quiet time before going to bed – no computer, TV,
phone etc and you will go to sleep much more quickly.
• Set a routine that you follow each night.
• 20 – 30 minutes physical exercise in the late afternoon.
• Avoid caffeine too close to bedtime so no tea, coffee, coke etc.
Studies have shown that most teens require 8 ½ - 9 hours sleep a
night to perform at their best, by following some of the above suggestions
this may be possible.
This information is not only important for our Year 12 students but
for all of us – the bottom line – we all perform better with a good
night’s sleep!
HOW IT WILL HELP RINGWOOD SC?
While helping the environment, you will also be helping Ringwood
SC. For each mobile phone, working and non-working, Fone Raiser
will offer $5 per phone. All money raised from this program will go
towards further development of Environmental Programs at Ringwood
SC, helping us to maintain our commitment to a sustainable
future.
WHAT DOES FONE RAISER DO WITH MY PHONE?
Your mobile phone will be refurbished and distributed to developing
counties, where they will play a major part in people’s lives
and increase their living standards. If your phone has seen brighter
days, and is beyond economic repair, it will be broken down and the
parts will be recycled for the making of new products. FoneRaiser
uses certified recycling programs, ensuring the most environmentally
conscious methods of electronic waste disposal are possible.
WHAT IF MY MOBILE PHONE IS NOT WORKING OR DAMAGED?
We accept all complete mobiles, even if the phone does not power
up, or has a damaged screen.
WHAT DO I NEED TO INCLUDE WITH MY MOBILE PHONE?
Only your phone and Battery is needed, but we’ll gladly accept your
accessories for proper recycling.
For further information please visit: http://www.foneraiser.com.au/
MOBILE PHONE COLLECTION – FONE RAISER
Did you know there are 20 million old mobile phones sitting in
draws? Most Australian households today have between 3 and 5
used mobile phones sitting in drawers or toy boxes. All are waiting
to be recycled. If they go into landfills, the phones and their batteries
introduce toxic substances into our environment.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Ringwood Secondary College in conjunction with Fone Raiser, an
Australian company, hope to collect as many of your old mobile
phones as possible, to stop them ending up in landfills, and to make
use of the technology.
Simply bring in your used mobile phones to the General Office and
place them in a satchel bag (located at the desk), and drop the bag
into the Fone Raiser cardboard collection box at the Office.
IMPORTANT: What about privacy and my personal information on
the phone?
Your privacy and security is very important to Fone Raiser. There
are a couple of simple tasks you should complete before sending
in your phone.
Please visit the following website to find instructions on how to reset
factory settings on your phone: http://www.foneraiser.com.au/
Please also make sure your SIM card or memory card is removed.
Fone Raiser will quickly destroy any SIM cards if included.
WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH OR EMOTIONAL HEALTH?
Mental or emotional health refers to your overall psychological
well-being. It includes the way you feel about yourself, the quality
of your relationships, and your ability to manage your feelings and
deal with difficulties.
Good mental health isn’t just the absence of mental health problems.
Being mentally or emotionally healthy is much more than being
free of depression, anxiety, or other psychological issues. Rather
than the absence of mental illness, mental and emotional health refers
to the presence of positive characteristics. Similarly, not feeling
bad is not the same as feeling good. While some people may not
have negative feelings, they still need to do things that make them
feel positive in order to achieve mental and emotional health.
PEOPLE WHO ARE MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY
HAVE:
A sense of contentment.
A zest for living and the ability to laugh and have fun.
The ability to deal with stress and bounce back from adversity.
A sense of meaning and purpose, in both their activities and their
relationships.
The flexibility to learn new things and adapt to change.
A balance between work and play, rest and activity, etc.
The ability to build and maintain fulfilling relationships.
Self-confidence and high self-esteem.
These positive characteristics of mental and emotional health allow
you to participate in life to the fullest extent possible through
productive, meaningful activities and strong relationships. These
Is your son or daughter in year 11 or 12 and looking
to join the workforce as soon as possible? Are you
worried about their future?
School-based traineeships are a great way to keep
your child at school whilst at the same time giving
them the necessary skills to enter the workforce as
soon as possible. A school-based apprenticeship
involves teaching children practical skills at school,
giving them the opportunity to work a few days a
week in a real work environment and be paid for their
time.
Smart Connection Training is a Nationally Accredited
Registered Training Organisation (RTO) who
specialises in providing school-based traineeships in
the sport, recreation, fitness and business industries
for year 11 and 12 students. School-based traineeships
are a Government initiative and come at no cost to
parents.
We specialise in the following school-based courses:
- Cert III in Fitness
- Cert III in Sport and Recreation
- Cert III in Community Recreation
- Cert III in Business
Please contact your VCAL Coordinator or Career
Teacher for more information. Alternatively, you can
contact Peter Evans on 03 8696 7500 or email info@
smartconnection.com.au if you have any questions
about the program and how it works.
