This has indeed been a busy week at Ringwood Secondary College
with NAPLAN testing, being undertaken by nearly 500 students in
Years 7 and 9. Unfortunately we do not receive any feedback until
close to the end of Term 3 to assist in developing plans for individual
and groups of students.
Our recent College Information Evening was very well attended
with around 800 people present. This was despite the inclement
weather. The tours that have been conducted since March have
also been heavily patronized, which augurs well for Year 7 applications
in 2013/2014. The primary schools will submit their numbers
in the coming weeks and Out of Zone applications are flooding in
at a similar rate to previous years.
In the past week Zac Marrinan was represented in Top Class Drama,
a series of performances that presents work completed in VCE Drama
as part of the VCE Season of Excellence. It is another example of
showcasing work produced by our outstanding VCE students from
last year.
On May 4, our Jazz ensembles made the annual trek to Mt Gambier
to participate in the ‘Generations in Jazz’ event and did so with great
resolve, performing well across the board. There were a number of
outstanding results, including: Sam Rash (Vibes)and Ryan Leggett
(base trombone) who were both selected in the Division 2 Super
Band in the stage band section; Mitchell Roberts and Ryan Smedley,
Year 12 , Joel Kitching Year 11 and Stephen Amos Year 10, affectionately
known as ‘No Sense of Direction’, were placed third in the
vocal ensemble section.
eSmart, a partnership between the Victorian Government and the
Alannah and Madeline Foundation, is being rolled out in every
Victorian government school and 300 selected Catholic and independent
schools over the next three years. Through this program,
schools are raising awareness about online safety and reducing
online risks including cyberbullying, sexting and protecting their
digital identity.
Last week the Education Minister, Martin Dixon recognized Ringwood
Secondary College, as the first government secondary school
to complete the eSmart program. He presented the school with a
sign to recognize this achievement. A group of students, our eSmart
ambassadors, and key staff travelled across to Lalor East Primary
School for the presentation.
Newsletter Number 5 May 18, 2012
RSC has been identified, nationally as a school that has examples
of performance and development best practices that can inform
the shape of the Australian Teacher Performance and Development
Framework. We have been approached to share these nationally
to stimulate engagement and inform national consultation.
In terms of direct funding initiatives in the 2012 State Budget
there is little to report to the community. Capital funding has
been limited to a small number of specific projects and completion
of previously announced work. There will be changes to the
EMA payments and their administration in 2013 and the school
start bonus for Year 7 has been abolished.
UNIFORM
Overall the uniform is looking very good and we congratulate students
on their appearance.
A reminder that with the cooler weather, girls should be wearing
either white socks with their winter uniform OR grey tights. Wearing
white socks with grey or black tights is not allowed. Students may
wear a plain black scarf for added warmth as outlined in the Uniform
section in the Student Diary. Other colours are not allowed.
We seek parental support to ensure students are wearing the correct
uniform.
Mrs J. Hughes
Assistant Principal
Next week I will be travelling with a delegation of Victorians to
Canberra to lobby the Federal Government to ensure the funding
from the recommendations of the Gonski report start flowing to
schools as soon as possible. Meetings are planned with both local
members and the Minister and Shadow Minister of Education.
From Mrs Hughes ..
SEMESTER 1 REPORTS
Michael Phillips
Principal
Term 2 is a very busy time and teachers will commence the process
of writing Semester 1 reports shortly. It’s important that students
keep on top of the work that is given to them and ensure
they submit all work on time to enable their teachers to assess it.
Please note that a pupil free day has been designated for Report
Writing Day on Friday, 15 June.
Distribution of semester reports for students in Years 11 and 12
will be at the end of the day on Friday, 29 June. Students in Years
7-10 will receive their reports in Week 1 of Term 3 on Friday, 20
July. Reports will not be available earlier.
TRANSITION
Over the past nine weeks the college has conducted many transition
tours for prospective families of Grade 5 and 6 students. On
each of these tours, student leaders have participated and spoken
of their experiences in moving from primary to secondary
school as well as the extra-curricula programs they have joined.
Their conduct has been exemplary and the Junior School Ambassadors
and Prefects are to be congratulated on their valuable
contribution towards the success of these tours.
YEAR 10 REVIEW
A working party is currently undertaking a review of the Year 10
program with a view to a possible change for implementation in
2013. To cater for individual differences we are exploring options
that will allow students greater choice of the subjects they undertake
and also a structure that aligns more with the Year 11 and 12
program. The working group is consulting with Curriculum Committee
and has sought feedback from the wider staff regarding
the current program. Any changes will accommodate Australian
Curriculum requirements. We would welcome feedback from
parents regarding the Year 10 program and would appreciate any
responses by Friday, 1 June. If you have any queries please contact
Julie Hughes, Eleni Stathatos or Annette Niven.
From Mr Salisbury ..
WORKING BEE
Last Saturday’s working bee was
a great success! A dedicated
group of parents and students
planted many plants and spread
two large loads of mulch at the
front of school, beautifying the
large area between rooms 1-5
and the front fence. Enjoy the
photos.
EXAMS AND REPORT WRITING ARE IMMINENT
Now is time for all students to be working to their fullest potential.
Students should be setting aside study time, appropriate to their
year level, preparing for exams and ensuring all set work has been
completed. For those struggling, communicate with your teachers
and find out what needs to be done to improve your chances of
gaining a satisfactory semester results.
HUB COMPLETION
The Hub is moving steadily towards
completion. Last weekend
the final sections for asphalting
were prepared and hopefully
this will be finished in the next
few days. We look forward to
beautifying the surrounding gardens
and building outdoor furniture
to create a highly functional
covered outdoor learning area.
TECHNOLOGY CENTRE
Currently the college is undertaking preliminary planning to increase
the size of the technology room to accommodate more staff
and centralise all issues relating to college technologies. The centre
will cater for all laptop and ipad issues and provide service to both
students and staff.
ATTITUDE TO SCHOOL SURVEY
During the past couple of weeks all students have completed the
very important, Attitude to School Survey. The results provide valuable
feedback to the college administration and staff and strongly
influence the future directions and goals of the college.
MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
YOUNG LEADERS PROGRAM
I was privileged to attend the presentation of certificates by the
Mayor of Maroondah to five of our Year 10 students : Cory, Freya,
Ashley, Kate and Teghan for their participation in a week long
Young Leaders program
which was run
across schools in the
region. The presentation
evening was
hosted by the Young
Leaders themselves
where they presented
some of the
skills they have developed
throughout
the week.
It was wonderful to hear students speak so confidently in front of
an enthusiastic and supportive crowd.
We will hear more of their exploits over the coming weeks as they
are keen to share their experiences with students across all year
levels.
Thank you to Sharlene for helping to involve students in the program.
MIDDLE SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS
This past fortnight we had celebratory morning teas for Year 9 and
10 students who received an excellent result on their Interim reports.
Congratulations to students and best wished on your continued
success. It is a timely reminder for all students in the Middle School
to put
in their best effort to complete and submit work as we come close
to the report writing period.
EDUCATION WEEK
On Friday 25th May during Education week in periods 3&4 all students
will take part in the forum ‘Dazzling at Year 10’ which promises
to be interesting, motivational and practical for students at this
stage of their learning.
From Mrs McGoldrick..
JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS
On April 30th and
May 1st, Year 7 and
8 students participated
in an Elevate
Education workshop
on Time Management.
During the session, each student
worked through a booklet that covered four
elements:
1.Finding time for homework and outside school activities.
2.Revision
3.Homework
4.Exams and Assignments
Finding the time to get the work done
Students calculated how much time they spent on socialising (including
Facebook), watching TV, playing sport and doing hobbies,
with a view to constructing a flexible weekly timetable that highlighted
blocks of time that could be used for homework and revision.
The process also revealed if students were spending too much
time on any particular outside school activity.
Handy hints for getting homework and revision completed
The presenters discussed the Number 1 homework enemy – ‘procrastination’
and encouraged students to do their least favourite
task first, and to do homework promptly, even if they have all
week.
Homework – handy hints:
1. Use your diary. (When the homework was given out, when it is
due and a reminder between the two dates if needed)
2. Speak to your teacher regularly (have we got anything due?
When’s the next test?)
3. Use your weekends. (Do your homework first, then you can enjoy
the rest of the weekend).
The reason why regular revision of class work is very important was
also stressed to students.
Here are the facts:
5 minutes after a class – you will have forgotten 20%
Tomorrow – you will have forgotten 50%
After 7 days – you will have forgotten 95%
Page 4
How to revise:
Re-read notes from class.
Explain what you have learnt to someone else (eg. family member).

Newsletter Number 5 May 18, 2012
How much revision should you be doing?
If you have homework: 15 minutes revision.
If you have no homework: At least 30 minutes revision.
What a noise! The sessions were full of laughing and smiles, everyone
had a ball!
”It was fun and entertaining” Trey 7C
The 4 steps for managing assignment deadlines
Many students find this difficult so they were encouraged to break
down assignments into bite sized bits and to make a list of all the
things that they needed to do in order to complete the task.
The 4 major components of assignments were discussed in some
detail.
1. Research – Library, Internet, newspaper etc
2. Organise – organise your information. Plan; create paragraphs,
plan each paragraph,
3. Write your research in your own words
4. Present – things you can do to add to the presentation of the assignment,
pictures, labeled diagrams, formatting, use of iPad Apps
to present your assignment or project
Students were also encouraged to estimate the number of days it
would take them to do each step so they could ensure that they
completed the task on time.
It is anticipated that the ideas covered in the Time Management
session will be reinforced in class and the activity on constructing
a weekly timetable, will be revised during the next pastoral care
session.
Initial student feedback of the Time Management session was positive,
and the Elevate Education presenters also commented on the
responsiveness and cooperation of our junior students during the
sessions.
”Our supportive friends made boring things fun!” Jasmine 7C
VCE Exam Schedule
Natasha Giardino and Sam Read
With term two fast drawing to a close, exam season will soon be
upon us. Please see the dates for the Year 11 and 12 June exam
schedule on the following two pages.
The last day for submission of Unit 1 work is Friday the 1st of June
and the last day for submission of Unit 3 work is Friday the 8th of
June.
Year 11 students will not be required at school during their exam
week unless they have an Exam or a Year 12 class, who will be revising
for their exams in the following week.
Likewise Year 12 classes will not run during their exam week from
Tuesday 12th to Thursday 14th of June. All students studying a Unit
3 and 4 subject in 2012 must sit the GAT exam on Thursday 14th of
June
Semester 2 classes will resume following the conclusion of the exams,
Tuesday 12th of June for Year 11 and Monday 18th of June for
Year 12.
Any student who has an exam clash or is concerned about their
schedule during this time should contact their relevant Community
Head.
Please see the 10 tips below for successful exam performance.
Good Luck.
Promoting a positive culture of respect and cooperation.
To acknowledge the students who consistently wear correct school
uniform and who treat others with respect and thoughtfulness, the
Junior School is running a competition where points are allocated
to communities for correct uniform and random acts of kindness.
At the end of Term 2, the winning community will receive a reward,
decided by the Year 7 and 8 Form Captains and the Junior School
team.
SENIOR NEWS:
Year 11 Supportive Friends
SESSION 2 WENT OFF WITH A BANG!!
The session in the year seven classrooms focused on improving
social cohesion and
inclusiveness within
each form. The activities
included reflective
discussions, brainstorming
and balloon
popping on mass. Each
balloon had a message
inside and the only way
to get it out was to pop
them all!
Page 5
1. Find out about the exam – consult the relevant Study Design and
understand the learning outcomes that will be assessed.
2. Ask for help – who is available to assist you? Teachers, parent,
siblings, friends or tutors
3. Sort out your subject material – what resources do you need, formula
sheets, calculators and other approved materials.
4. Check out past exam papers - All previous exam papers and assessors
reports are available on the VCAA website or from your
teacher.
5. Know where to go – Know your venue, start time, designated
seat, etc.
6. Don’t cram – Avoid trying to learn new information the night before
or the morning of an exam, prepare well in advance.
7. Keep your cool – be prepared, arrive with enough time to spare,
get a good nights sleep beforehand and work in and sit down with
confidence.
8. Use your reading time – Identify exactly what the questions are
asking for, look for hints; information in a multiple-choice question
may help with one of the short answers later on.
9. Break the questions down – what have you been asked to do?
Describe, explain, compare, analyse, etc.
10. Review your performance – Reflect on how you prepared for
and performed in the exam, what worked, what didn’t and what
could you do differently next time.
National Electric Wheelchair
Sports Competition
Hi,
I went up to Sydney for one week participating in the National Electric
Wheelchair Sports Competition representing Victoria. We came
1st in Hockey, 2nd in Soccer and 4th in Rugby. We also received the
Roger Melnyk Trophy, which means that we were the best team
overall in the round robin matches over the 3 sports. On the hockey
round robin day I had an accident, my chair with me in it tipped
over sideways. The good thing was that I did not get injured. I drove
over someone’s back wheel and tipped over in slow motion or thats
what it felt like anyway.
a lot with our English, especially
reading and writing.
In this class, we are gaining
more confidence every lesson
because we are a small
group and our teacher cares
about us and helps us. At the
moment, we have a student
teacher, Ms Mckernan, and she is very lovely, helpful, patient and kind.
We do a lot of activities with
her. The recent one was on
ANZAC Day. She taught
us about the history of the
ANZACS and also brought in
some delicious anzac biscuits
for us to sample. Everyone
loves Ms Mckernan.
I had lots of fun this year, talking to all the other players from different
states and the best thing was that my brother also represented
Victoria for the first time. In the rugby 3rd place playoff final I conceded
a yellow card for supposably tackling someone in reverse too
hard. I thought that it was funny because it was a very soft yellow
card, a bad call by the referee.
This year in ESL, we are looking
forward to improving our
language and understanding
of the Australian culture.
We are really having fun and
enjoying our classes. ESL is
our favourite class.
I have attached a picture of my team with me holding up a yellow
card.
National Schools Constitutional
Convention 2012
AUSTRALIAN FEDERALISM: A QUESTION OF BALANCE
I thought I looked the part of a model teen, standing in a school
blazer two sizes too large, my shoes polished to a pristine shine and
my tie so high it was restricting my normal breathing patterns. I
looked around the around the small circle of several other students
all dressed similarly, looking ready for school photos or a trip to Canberra.
This group of twenty-five made up the Victorian delegates
for the 2012 National Schools Constitutional Convention. This small
circle of students was situated in the domestic departures lounge
at Melbourne Airport far too early in the morning. In less then two
hours I would be on my way to Canberra sitting on a plane with the
24 other Victorian Delegates a handful of teachers and anyone else
lucky enough to be sharing the plane with us. There I sat amongst
a group of people roughly my age I’d never meet before, reflecting
on the fact I would be meeting, socialising and working with another
hundred or so students who were complete strangers to me.
When we arrived in Canberra I was both excited and daunted by the
task ahead of me. For the next three days I was to partake in a convention
that addressed the issues of federalism, the constitution
and their relevance to Australia today. My knowledge on both of
these topics at that point in time was limited but now it’s fair to say I
know a thing or two about them after the convention. I was glad to
discover that there
were other students
that shared
my lack of knowledge
and I was
also impressed
by many of the
other delegate’s
knowledge on
politics, federalism
and the constitution.
The convention itself would be held in the Old Parliament
House and throughout the convention we were lucky enough to
visit Parliament House, the High Court of Australia, the Aboriginal
Tent Embassy and the National Archives of Australia. Even just to
visit these iconic Australian places was a fantastic prospect let alone
being able to sit in on Question time at Parliament House and to
spend time working in Old Parliament’s House of Representatives.
Once our Victorian Delegation convened with the other state and
Territory’s delegates at Parliament House, the convention had officially
started. Our first duty as delegates was to sit in on a question
time, an informative, entertaining and at some points humorous
experience. Some of the matter discussed by the politicians was
classed as too controversial for Parliament, resulting in more than a
Page 9
few members being evicted by the equally controversial speaker of
the house. It was fascinating to watch our politicians working and
arguing amongst themselves in a process that is intended to benefit
the greater good of our nation. After this exciting experience
we then were welcomed to the convention by none other than the
Hon Peter Garret AM MP, Minister for School Education, Early Childhood
and Youth who was representing the Prime Minister. After this
incredibly warm and over gesticulated welcome the intense political
discussion and consumption of food began.
Over the next two days the delegates participated in various workshops
and discussions each focussing on different aspects of the
constitution and federalism. Many of the quest speakers and facilitators
included Economists, law experts and other professors with
shiny PhDs. One particular workshop involved learning about the
process of referendums and then participating in our own mock
referendum.
Other highlights of the Convention were the endless soapboxes session,
which allowed delegates to speak their mind on any relevant
or current issues. Other delegates
could then respond
to the ideas put forward.
The two most prominent issues
that came up in these
sessions was Australia becoming
a republic and gay
marriage. Both sides of
these topics were argued
fiercely and at some points
many different people’s beliefs
conflicted. Another highlight of the Convention was the tour
and dinner held at the High Court of Australia. These was a great
chance to social with one another and relax after a long day of political
discussion and enjoy the literally awesome building the High
Court is.
From the convention I learn a lot about the constitution and about
it’s application to Australia’s
society today. I learnt the
many complications that
are brought up when addressing
an issue that is
dealt with in the constitution
and how it applies today.
I also learnt a lot about
the concepts of federalism
and it’s benefits and disadvantages
in Australia today.
From attending the convention
I feel empowered and believe that I can have a voice on issues
that both Australia and the global community have to face. I feel
that I know understand the delicate and sometimes difficult system
that government is but I also discovered its effective and thorough
functionality.
For me the most interesting parts of the program were listing to
other people’s opinions, beliefs and discoveries. Whether it was a
fellow student or an expert talking, I found myself listening to their
stance on a certain topic. I found it fascinating to hear the vast diversity
of people’s ideas. It was great to see that people shared the
same views as you or that there were people that defended their
beliefs as strongly as you defended your own
Legal Studies Court Visit
Unit 1 VCE students had an exciting and informative visit to the
County and Supreme Courts. We had Justice O’Neill speak to the
group about the importance
of the court hierarchy. We
were able to walk around the
court and sit at the judge’s
bench, the dock and where
the jury sits. We then saw
the beginnings of a criminal
fraud case.
After lunch the groups
changed courts. Mr Moody’s
class saw the prosecution examine
their first witness. This
was of interest to the group
because it involved an assault
at Ringwood’s Orange
Whip nightclub.
Mrs Harris’ group heard the
judge summing up the defence’s
case to the jury. This was a very complicated murder trial
and the jury was charged with deciding if it was murder, defensive
homicide, or manslaughter. They had to do this for each of the three
accused and then decide on any defences that applied to the case.
The day was extremely relevant to the VCE course. The students
were well behaved and good representatives for the school.
Performing Arts..
REPORT GIVEN TO SCHOOL COUNCIL:
The beginning of 2012 has seen a continuing development of the
Performing Arts programs of the college.
The final itinerary is currently being pieced together, but 6 out of
7 legs are now locked in. A proposition to council will follow in the
near future.
Music ensembles
Last weekend saw all of our stage bands and the male vocal quartet,
“No Sense Of Direction”, perform at the Generations in Jazz festival
in Mt Gambier. All ensembles equipped themselves admirably
and did the College proud.
Special acclaim is reserved for:
• No Sense Of Direction (Mitch Roberts, Ryan Smedley, Joel Kitching,
Stephen Amos) finished third in Vocal Division 2 – an amazing effort
• Ryan Leggett (Bass Trombone) and Sam Rash (Percussion) were
selected for the Division 2 Superband and performed in the finale
concert.
Extra p.Arts
This parent support group was convened again for 2012 at an informal
gathering on Tuesday night. Many thanks to Viv Amos and
Densie Rash for creating such a great vibe among the parents who
were there.
Many great ideas were shared and we look forward to the fabulous
support of this group through the run of production.
Drama and Dance
These programs continue to thrive and showcases are fast approaching.
Last week saw a drama excursion to Top Acts to see Zak Marrinan
perform his VCE Drama piece form 2011. The Middle School
Play is locked in for its second year in October and Flash Mobs are
soon to be unleashed once more as part of Education Week.
Other key events of the year so far include:
• Symphonic Band performing at BMW edge as part of the EMR concert
series
• Jazz Night at Spencerslive – the prelude to Mt Gambier for our jazz
ensembles
• A range of day camps and master classes with visiting tutors
Production:
Despite a false start with a rights issue, we have now made strong
inroads into the rehearsal program for this year’s musical, Sweet
Charity, to be performed between August 9 and 18.
A record number of students auditioned and we ultimately accepted
a cast of just over 80, unfortunately being unable to accommodate
another 55. The conceptual design for the show is well underway
and there are a range of new marketing initiatives that are
sure to get people excited. Some highlights surrounding this year’s
show will include:
• A company tshirt for every member of the cast, crew, orchestra
and staff involved
• The revamped production jacket, vest and/or beanie – half the
cost of previous year’s with a more contemporary feel
• An incredible staging design with sky-high rolling truck sets, and
elevated orchestra and “the lake”
• A shift to a Saturday twilight performance to replace the poorselling
first Friday night. This will be followed by a reunion function
for all past RSC show paricipants
• The unveiling of a new RSC Production website for ease of communication
and documentation of the production
A number of our students have also received significant roles in this
year’s Victorian State Schools’ Spectacular.
Williamstown and involved a
variety of events with a focus
on swimming, sprinting
and board paddling. Some
of the highlights included
Khy and Tristian Blizzard’s
1st placing in their age
RSC Equestrian Team
RIDING HIGH
Students from the Ringwood
Secondary College Equestrian
team competed at the
12th annual Victorian Inter-
School Horse Trials Championship
held by Tintern Grammar
at Wandin Park on the
28th and 29th of April. The
competition hosts hundreds
of riders from all across Victoria,
with mainly private colleges competing for the coveted award.
Students compete Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country
across the 2 days.
This year the RSC Equestrian
Team won the Championship
by 1 point, becoming the 1st
government school to win
in the competitions history!
The team members included
Chloe Tan Sing (9), Ellie
Symes (10), Celene Buttress
(11) and Elisha Laukart (12).
All of the girls were presented
with a sash, rosette, an embroidered
rug and a huge
cheer from the crowd for
their efforts, as well as securing
the perpetual trophy for
1 year. This is an amazing effort
from a wonderful group
of students where were so
humble in their victory. Not
only was the team victorious,
notably Ellie Symes and Celene Buttress were both awarded individual
victories in their respective grades. Thank you to all four students
who rode with courage, competed with a smile on their face
and who supported each other to secure Equestrian Gold
Sharing in the victory were also the parent team who support the
RSC Equestrian Team. Their time, support and work is much appreciate
and no doubt contributed to the success of the team – Thank
you!
Congratulations to all involved – a remarkable effort!
Out of Uniform day – 22nd May
Double Day!
In Australia today, cancer touches the lives of one in two people.
Pretty much everyone knows one person who has been diagnosed
with cancer. Ringwood Secondary College would like to offer its
help and support by holding a fund raising day, on the 22nd of May
called Double Day.
On Double Day students and staff are encouraged to dress as a double
with a friend. This means, they should come dressed exactly the
same as someone else, whether that be in standard clothes or an
exciting costume! Dressing up is obviously optional, however, a $2
dollar donation will be required from all who come out of uniform
on the day. Throughout the day there will be many activities such
as three legged races (with your double of course!), a best costume
competition, sweets for sale and many more things to help raise
Page 13
money. So help us raise money for the Peter Mac Foundation and
the Cancer Council, by supporting this day.
Youth in Philanthropy update
Our group of six youth philanthropists (Hannah Brown, Leanne Fifita,
Megan Williams, Holly Tregenza, Samantha White and Miranda
Boyle) have been allocated their three charities. The three charities
that the girls will be working with and allocating funds to are
Brenda House (currently in
the process of merging with
Maroondah Halfway House),
The Wilderness Society and
Heathmont Interchurch.
Each of these charities completed
the application for
grants to the Lord Mayor’s
Charitable Foundation, and
were selected for consideration
of allocation of the
$12,000 grant money the girls have to distribute.
In the coming months the girls will visit all three charities to view
a presentation from each focusing on why they deserve the grants.
They will be working closely with their professional mentor, Stephanie
Orr, throughout this process.
Nepal Ice Cream Fundraiser
There are kids and families all around the world who don’t have
what we have. There is a village in Nepal, which needs help. We are
going to help them. We need to raise as much money as we can
so that we can construct a classroom for them in March/April next
year.
Last Tuesday, students and teachers were selling ice cream at
the junior school barbeque area. We were fortunate for the good
weather and the sunshine.
The ice cream proved to be
very popular. We will be having
another ice cream day later
this term with even more
flavours to choose from!
All of the money raised last
week and in the future will
be put towards building materials
and supplied to build a
classroom in Nepal. It is a great cause and helps out younger children
and also kids just like us who aren’t as fortunate as we are.
Raised last week was a total of about $230, which is a fantastic starting
point!
Our next fundraiser won’t be
far away and all donations
are welcome too. For more
information or to make a donation,
please see Mrs Ross
or Miss Bennett.

LOTE NEWS
Last Friday some members of the LOTE faculty attended the annual
MLTAV Conference in the city. This day is worthwhile for our staff in
that they attend sessions which cover many new and valuable areas
surrounding the teaching and ever-changing face of LOTE in the
classroom and in our lives. Many teachers and professionals from
all over Victoria present the sessions and this year we were very
fortunate to have one of our own, Ms Simone Hobbs, present a session
on the use of iPads in the classroom. This was a most valuable
presentation given by Simone and it was clear that many teachers
gained some very useful information from her presentation.
We were also able to renew
contacts with colleagues
from other schools and exchange
email addresses for
further correspondence.
Many book sellers were
present with their new merchandise
and ever ending
knowledge of what’s new in
our classrooms.
All in all, we came away feeling on top of our teaching with all the
knowledge we gained from each session.
To launch the transition into Year 11, all Year 10 students and parents
are invited to attend our Future Options Evening on Tuesday
from our college detailing the Victorian Certificate of Applied
Learning (VCAL). Letters will be sent home outlining the evening
program within the next few weeks.
Work Experience
Many students are yet to obtain employment and they are now
very late in doing so. These students must see Mrs Allison urgently.
Congratulations to the keen and conscientious students who have
secured a placement. In the next month a Year 10 Work Experience
assembly will be held and student/employer expectations will e
covered. A booklet will be distributed outlining all details.
TAFE Semester Two Opportunities.
All Year 10 students interested in the GAP-Growth and Pathways
for Box Hill Institute are reminded online applications for Semester
2 have opened. Courses run for one afternoon (3.00-6.00pm) a
week for Semester 2. They provide a vocational taster for a range
of programs which are in high demand, therefore some urgency
is required if you wish to secure a placement. Students must be 15
Page 14
years or older and must visit Mrs Allison soon to apply as positions
fill up very quickly.
YEAR 11
MIPs (Managing Individual Pathways’) interviews are underway and
guest speakers and have some time to explore the campus. Details
will be distributed via a school notice within the next week.
VTAC 2013 Guides
All year 12 students who wish to apply for Tertiary Institutions in
2013 will need to purchase a VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admission
and tradition and these trips allow all our students the opportunity
to visit Thailand as part of a reciprocal arrangement.
A huge thanks must go
to all the Year 7 teachers
who so graciously
included our visitors
into their learning
environment, Mrs
Fay Maloney and our
homestay families.
Hi Marie,
The homestay for us was an opportunity to open our house to a
complete stranger. It was an incredible learning experience for my
children to allow another child into their family as sometimes we
do become self absorbed.
The journey for the 3 weeks was learning and teaching two
very different cultures to unite as one under the same roof. My
children adopted things from Thailand where here they have taken
for granted
With our lifestyles so busy we very rarely eat dinner as a
family or attend outings as a whole. Having Prin we all made the
effort to sit around the table to eat our dinner where we shared so
many wonderful stories and experiences. We did many day trips
which each of my children made the effort to be a part of. Having
my family as a whole was a reminder that we can make time for
each other and should do it more often. The experience was short
but definitely life changing for us. We would like to thank you for
allowing us to be a part of this amazing program.
Education Week - 50 Word Story
As part of education week we would like to get all Year 7 and 8 students to write a 50 word story on the
theme of EDUCATION!
A 50 word story is exactly 50 words – not one more or less. It aims to make you a
succinct writer using every word for full effect. Include a beginning, a middle
and an end.
Here are a few (taken from http://fiftywordstories.com/) to get you thinking:
Slug Face
When the new girl entered, my face was covered in slugs.
I’d done it to get Kayley’s attention, and she was suitably grossed out, but as soon as I
saw the new girl, Kayley didn’t matter.
By then, unfortunately, it was too late.
I live alone, now, with my slugs.
On Problematic Road
“Are we there yet?”
“No,” Mary snapped. Two of the kids started crying.
Ben ignored them.
Mary groaned. “Why do we even go for these drives? We don’t like it. The kids don’t
like it. Nobody likes it.”
“Fine.” Ben turned the car around.
Beneath them, the road sighed sadly.
New Shoes
Mommy bought me a new pair of shoes. I am not allowed to get them dirty at all. New shoes are extra
special, Mommy says.
A mean man stepped in a puddle and splashed my shoes today. I punched his face.
Mommy says faces are even specialer than new shoes.
When you have written your 50 words story, click on the following link and
post it here:
HAPPY WRITING!!
