End Of Year Reports:
As a result of the industrial bans put in place during the ongoing
dispute between the education sector union and the state government,
many of the end of year reports for 2012 will not contain
comments or grades.
Many reports will consist of the report template as per the current
report format and include VELS progression points for each study
in years 7 to 10 and the overall unit result for year 11. Attendance
information will also be provided.
Reports for years 7 to 10 will be available following assemblies,
on Wednesday December 20 and teachers will be contactable on
Thursday December 20 to discuss your child’s report, if required.
We regret having to make these changes but given that no agreement
has been reached and the industrial bans have not been lifted
in time, many staff are unable to prepare considered, quality, individual
comments for students this year.
The awards for College Presentation night will not be impacted by
the report writing bans.
The local Ringwood Secondary College Branch of the AEU has prepared
a letter that explains its position in relation to the action currently
being undertaken and a copy is included with this edition of
the newsletter for your information.
SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS
What a night!
Our Valedictorians of 2012
celebrated their achievements,
friendships and
thirteen years of schooling
at a gala event at the iconic
MCG. Looking every bit of
the adults that they will become,
the stunning night
was laced with speeches,
awards and accolades.
Whilst the night will forever be etched into our memories for the
path that has been travelled thus far, it also becomes symbolic of
the possibilities and opportunities to follow.
Staff, parents and students mingled to share anecdotes, reflect
with good humour on the trials and tribulations that is Year 12
and discuss plans and wishes for 2013 and beyond. Warmth and
genuine affection provided the backdrop of the night.
Transition classes
Transition into VCE for all our current Year 10 students starts on the
4th of December and concludes on the 5th of December.
Students are to report to the College Hall @ 9.00 sharp. At this assembly,
there will be important information and timetables distributed.
The College expectations are that students are to arrive in full
school uniform for all their classes.
Year 11 Formal
A reminder that the Year 11 Formal will be held at Alfred’s Homestead
on Thursday the 6th of December starting at 7.00pm, concluding
Class of 2012.
From Mrs Stathatos ..
MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
The examination period is over as Year 10 students and Year 9 students
sat for their examinations in core subjects and the Maths
Common test respectively. While the exams showcase one component
of their efforts, students can reflect upon how they have
approached the semester and where to make improvements in the
future.
Final arrangement for Year 10 students
The Transition program for Year 10 students entering Year 11 in
2013 takes place on Tuesday 4th December and Wednesday 5th
December.
All students are required to attend school on Wednesday 19th December
for a final assembly and report collection.
The Honorable Minister of Education, Mr Peter Garrett, visited our
college last week and spoke about funding to schools. Six of our
Middle School students were
fortunate to meet and greet
him and listen to his presentation.
Mr Garrett was certainly
impressed by the variety
of programs on offer for
our students. A big thank you
Junior School Community Competition:
This year, the Junior School Team implemented a community competition
to foster positive behaviours and pro social values. The
winning communities (groups of 3 forms) at Year 7 and Year 8, are
to be rewarded for their consistent adherence to our College dress
code and random acts of kindness to others, by participating in an
event of their choice. The Junior Leaders voted to participate in a
movie afternoon as the prize for winning the community competition.
Congratulations to Mr Tucker’s Year 7 community and Mr Mckay’s
Year 8 community for showing respect for our College rules and
values. Students from 7B, 7E, 7F, 8C, 8D and 8F will be attending a
movie afternoon at Hoyts Eastland on December 7, leaving school
at 12 Noon and returning at 3.15pm.
Cyberbullying Presentation:
All Year 7 and 8 students will
be attending a Cyberbullying
presentation facilitated
by Leading Senior Constable
Natalie Dean from Victoria
Police and Ringwood SC
Year 8 student Kira Corstorphan.
The presentation was
in response to an incident
experienced by Kira and she
has worked with Constable
Dean in order to share her
experience with her peers, with the view to improving the safety
of young people at her school.
Kira’s speech to the Year 7 students
evoked a silence across
the cohort while they listened
intently to her story, while
constable Dean concluded
with some sobering facts regarding
the consequences
for individuals who use digital
media to stalk or distribute
illegal material. The Junior
Thank You From Jenny Ward..
To all the staff who came on the 15th November to share my
‘Retirement Event’ – a special note of gratitude. Midst a sea of grey
wisdom a few young faces popped along and I felt very humbled,
a wee bit melancholy but ever so grateful. Thank you to the current
class of RSC who joined the parents, former staff and principals.
I am delighted to have been part of this culture for so long
and cherish many memories. My gift is super and the book simply
stunning. Much appreciation.
Mrs . Jenny Ward
School Council Report..
The college council meeting for October was held at the college on
the 17th at 7.30pm and 14 members were in attendance.
The RTTF reported that student enrolment numbers had doubled
since last report. This says a lot about the quality of programs delivered
by RTTF and that word is finally spreading to the community
and industry regarding the high standard of programs and quality
outcomes produced by RTTF.
The principal reported on the effects of the change to the SRP [student
resource package] for 2013. This is the income received from
the government to deliver programs to students for the coming
year. The effect was practically neutral as the amount extra was $4
per student.
The principal gave an extensive outline of the differences in education
deliveries between Australia and Finland. An interesting and
enlightening discussion occurred as a result.
The request for traffic lights to the intersection of Great Ryrie and
Bedford Road be installed is still active and a response from Vic
Roads was received. Vic Roads advised that Maroondah Council is
to be approached. The request is ongoing and will be vigorously
pursued.
Two new projects commenced in the holiday break. The new tech
office is near completion and will enable the consolidation of all IT
services into one location. This is the result of funding received from
National Secondary Schools Computer Funding received in 2011.
The other new project is the disabled change and support area as
part of our sick bay. The department has provided the funding for
this important facility.
The meeting concluded at 9.15pm and resolved to meet again in
December 2012.
Chaplain Spot..
Christmas can mean many things to many different people. Depending
on the year you have had can also influence how you feel
heading into the Christmas season.
No matter what type of year you have had, however, this season can
bring something new if we concentrate on the things that it is supposed
to signify. The focus should be on peace and joy along with
forgiveness and ultimately, love.
The following quote talks about the kind of love it endeavours to
encourage “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does
not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not selfseeking,
it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love
does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects,
always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
If we make this our main focus this Christmas it may give us a whole
new perspective as we head into 2013.
Stay safe.
Wellbeing Days..
Year 8 Wellbeing Days
On Wednesday 21st, Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd November our
Year 8 students enjoyed a full day of activities as part of RSC’s Wellbeing
program. The themes that were explored included Respectful
Relationships, Mindfulness
and Mental Health and Wellbeing.
Throughout the day students
experienced a Martial Arts
self-defense course, a Yoga
class, a Wellbeing session,
morning or afternoon tea at
either Spot n Nosh or Barclays
and lunch at La Porchetta in
Heathmont.
The students’ response to the day was especially pleasing as seen
in some of their comments below. I was particularly impressed by
their behaviour as they represented our College and I received a lot
of positive feedback from staff, parents, students and members of
the local community.
Thank you for today... It was a lot of fun!
Sinead Lumsden
I had such a great time today; it was SUPER
great fun :)
Josh Giardino
The owner of Ultimate Martial Arts was
so impressed by our students that he has offered to provide two
scholarships for a full year of all expenses paid training at UMA. Applications
closed this week and the winners will be announced in
the coming weeks.
Year 10 Wellbeing afternoon
Year 10 students were given the opportunity to experience a whole
range of Stress Less activities during their wellbeing afternoon last
Tuesday 20th November. Activities included African drumming, Tai
Chi, Yoga, Meditation, Kick boxing, Dodge ball, Hip Hop and Henna
Tattooing. Students could also attend information sessions about
Leadership initiatives in Maroondah, Supportive Friends at RSC and
World Vision. The day concluded with a presentation by Hugh Van
Cuylenburg from Project Resilience about Positive Psychology.
Christmas Hampers..
On Wednesday 28th November the Yr 11
students packaged donated items into
Christmas Hampers to be distributed to
families in our local community. Many students
donated items, others donated their
time to create the hampers. The study
centre was a hive of activity at lunchtime
as many hampers were created.
Much thought went into the grouping
of items, and the wrapping of hampers
was called,
“Christmas
preseason”
by some of the boys who
perhaps weren’t as skilled at wrapping!
Many thanks to the school
community who donated items. The
hampers will be distributed to local
families in need by the Migrant
Information Centre and other local
charities.
Work Experience 2013 - Time to apply for jobs!
Students interested in work placements should visit the Careers
Room to obtain information on applying for Work Experience in
2013. All students should have a Work Experience booklet distributed
at a combined form assembly in October.
Congratulations to those Year 9 students who have been successful
in obtaining employment for 2013. Training and testing sessions
for O H & S have been delivered and any students who may have
missed the day will need to access the safe@work website and sit
The Reporters’ Academy..
The Pacific Youth Basketball Championships
RTTF Hosts launch of the Victorian
Skills Gateway..
The Hon. Peter Hall MLC, Minister for Higher Education and Skills,
launched the Victorian Skills Gateway* on Sunday 2 December
2012 at the Ringwood Trade Training Facility.
Minister Hall gave an overview of the new site, followed by students
of the Facility giving demonstrations of trade skills.
This week 6 of our young reporters from three MEC schools (Ringwood,
Croydon and Norwood) are in Churchill, Gippsland reporting
on the 9th Pacific Youth Basketball Championships. Arriving
on Sunday their first assignment was to video and report on the
Cultural performances by the 8 participating teams. The Samoans
were the highlight with a 25-minute display making up for the
12 years missing from the event. The Australians, unfortunately,
were probably the worst highlighting our need to develop some
better cultural singing and dancing. The islands really do put us to
shame. It is just as well they dominate on the courts.
Our reporters have excelled in every way this week. Their content
has not only been exceptionally well written it has been produced
to very tight deadlines. There are 8 matches a day and 30 minutes
after each one an article is published on the official tournament
website with an accompanying photo gallery. Some matches they
have been responsible for live video streaming and this is being
watched all over the world.
We have had many positive comments about their writing as
some of the matches, especially those involving Australia, have
been one-sided affairs. The writing has been culturally sensitive
highlighting that this event is more than just the sport. Our team
are the official media and I doubt that a team as young as this has
ever been solely responsible for content. The team finishes on
Sunday and will have by then completed 60 articles, over 10,000
photos and conducted many interviews. They have learnt about
themselves, other cultures and most importantly how to work as
a team. We are so proud of the quality and level of work output
from our reporters. They have received many accolades, none
more satisfying than the general public who could not be at the
event but have relived it through the stories and images produced
by our TRA team. They have created the web traffic, which for
the last three days, was 40,000 page views from over 20 different
countries.
Dear Parent/Guardian,
We are writing to explain why the report you will receive in the next few weeks for your child will be
less detailed than you would normally expect.
On behalf of teachers, principals and support staff, the Australian Education Union has been
negotiating with the Baillieu Government for a new enterprise agreement for over a year. Still we
have no agreement.
The Premier promised to make Victorian teachers the highest paid in the nation, but now offers only
2.5% while seeking to introduce performance pay which will break down the teamwork and
collaboration which are so important in our schools. He also seeks to sack 5% of our teachers — a
move that would lead to higher class sizes and less individual attention for our students.
This term, therefore, AEU members have begun a ban on providing written comments and
numerical assessments in student reports.
The purpose of the ban is to highlight the significant amount of unpaid work school staff complete to
provide written reports about student achievement.
Parents and guardians will receive a written assessment of their child’s achievement against the
Victorian Essential Learning Standards, VCE, VCAL, VET or other equivalent standard and a record
of attendance (if applicable). AEU members will not provide any other written information or
comments.
Teachers will of course be available to meet should you wish to discuss your child’s progress.
Our teachers, principals and education support staff are committed to providing the best education
for your children. Our goal is to improve conditions across the government system so that we not
only maintain but improve the quality of education we provide your children.
To show your support, we ask you to send your own message to Premier Baillieu and his
government via our campaign website, www.keepthepromise.com.au. Please encourage other
members of the school community to do likewise.
Once again, we thank you for your continued support.
Yours sincerely,
EMA - Newsletter
Information 2013
Education Maintenance Allowance - information for parents currently receiving EMA
Changes to the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for 2013:
The EMA continues to help families on lower incomes with financial assistance to cover the cost of educational expenses
including textbooks, stationery, uniforms and excursions for their child up until the age of 16.
From 2013, the Victorian Government is restructuring the EMA to better target financial support to families on lower incomes.
Payments made direct to parents will be increased for eligible recipients at all year levels up to age 16, with an additional
increase for parents with students in Years Prep and 7 in recognition of the additional costs at these transition points.
In 2013 the annual EMA payment for families with children in primary school (years 1-6) will receive a payment of $150. Families
with children in secondary school (Year 8 up until the age of 16) will receive $250.
The School Start Bonus which was previously received by EMA families has been discontinued as a separate payment from 2013
and added to the EMA. As a result, parents of children in Prep and Year 7 will receive boosted EMA payments of $200 and $300
respectively in those years.
From 2013, schools will no longer receive EMA payments on behalf of parents. However, $62 million over four years will be
redirected to the State’s most needy schools to assist families on lower incomes. These funds will form part of the school Student
Resource Packages to be allocated at the local level.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for the EMA in 2013, you must:

be either a parent or guardian of a primary or secondary school student up to the age of sixteen; and
be an eligible beneficiary of a Centrelink pension, allowance or benefit within the meaning of the State Concessions Act
2004* or be a Veterans Affairs (TPI) pensioner or be a temporary foster parent.
* i.e – the parent/guardian must be the holder of a valid Health Care Card or valid Pension Card.
The eligibility criteria must be met as at 29 January 2013 (Instalment One) and 15 July 2013 (Instalment Two).
The EMA application form must be submitted to the school by 28 February 2013.
You can receive the EMA by direct deposit into your nominated bank account or by individual cheque which will be posted to the
school for collection. You may also redirect your payment directly to the College which you can use towards educational
expenses for your child.
Contact: EMA application forms for 2013 are available from the General Office .
Schoolkids Bonus:
From January 2013, a new payment called the 'Schoolkids Bonus' will be introduced by the Commonwealth Government. The
Schoolkids Bonus will be paid by Centrelink in January and July each year to help families with school costs.
Families receiving Family Tax Benefit Part A will receive:up to $410 for each child in primary school
• up to $820 for each child in secondary school.
