preferred economic development strategy within a<br />

community, and it plays a significant role in most<br />

communities across the state.<br />

Special interest <strong>tourism</strong> like nature based <strong>tourism</strong><br />

and heritage <strong>tourism</strong> create opportunity for<br />

communities to identify, package and market their<br />

existing assets.<br />

Communities throughout the state have<br />

substantial assets that need to be identified and<br />

incorporated into their overall economic<br />

development efforts. Increased <strong>tourism</strong> product<br />

can translate into local job creation and additional<br />

revenue in the form <strong>of</strong> property tax, bed tax and<br />

sales tax. The state ultimately benefits as well<br />

from additional revenues.<br />

Limited resources means collaboration among<br />

various local groups and agencies is essential to<br />

enhancing and developing local <strong>tourism</strong> product.<br />
