Planning for Tourism<br />

Agri<strong>tourism</strong>: Build on the County’s Rich Agricultural Heritage - Expanding Family Farm Revenue Sources<br />

First Six months<br />

Work with Farm Bureau and USDA to create an Agri<strong>tourism</strong> advisory group made up <strong>of</strong> farmers and agribusiness<br />

owners to provide realistic input on the community’s Agri<strong>tourism</strong> opportunities and initiatives.<br />

Take farmers and community development stakeholders on a field trip to McMinnville, Tennessee to study the economic<br />

impact and marketing strategies <strong>of</strong> a successful container nursery industry cluster.<br />

Second Six Months<br />

Designate, and begin to develop and market a Horticultural Heritage Corridor bringing gAgri<strong>tourism</strong> products to a<br />

centralized location and showcasing “green”.<br />

Components might include:<br />

An expanded tourist friendly farmers market site<br />

Accessible centralized showcase for more scattered or remote Agri<strong>tourism</strong> attractions<br />

Specialty Nursery Businesses (Camellias, heritage produce, daylilies, native plants, wildlife habitat and birding<br />

plants and supplies)<br />

An FDA Approved Community Kitchen for small businesses wishing to package and market family recipe food<br />

items and local delicacies<br />

Demonstration Organic Greenhouses, a food co-op and free community garden plots (raised beds on vacant<br />

parking lot)<br />

Horticulture and floriculture-related training facilities expanded in partnership with Wiregrass Tech<br />

reorganization.<br />

Art market and outdoor performance space to showcase local musicians and artists...<br />

Third Six Months:<br />

Begin planning to create a Summer Ag Camp to educate urban youth and other tourists t on farming and where their food<br />

comes from.<br />
