ABOUT RIGHTS OF WOMEN
Rights of Women works to attain justice and equality by informing, educating and empowering
women on their legal rights. Founded in 1975, we are a not for profit voluntary organisation. Our
core service is our advice line which offers free, confidential legal advice to women. We also
specialise in providing high quality, practical and accredited training in the area of women’s rights.
Our courses are especially popular with community and voluntary organisations working directly
with women. Our training programmes are valued for making the law transparent, accessible
and user friendly, giving you the knowledge and skills to enable your service users to access
justice.
This training is provided by women and is for women only. If you cannot attend on these dates or
would like customised training for your organisation, please contact us.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND THE LAW
Do you offer support to women affected by domestic violence?
This updated course to accompany Rights of Women’s highly acclaimed Domestic Violence DIY
Injunction Handbook provides:
● an overview of the civil law on domestic violence including the new Domestic Violence Crime
and Victims Act 2004
● non-molestation and occupation orders
● who can apply for an order?
● how to apply for an order
● court practice and procedure – including filling in the forms and serving the order
● how the new law will affect the enforcement of orders

CHILD CONTACT AND THE LAW

This updated course to accompany Rights of Women’s popular Child Contact Handbook provides:
● an overview of the law relating to contact including an update on the Adoption and Children Act
2002 and the Government’s proposed legislation following the “Parental Separation”
consultation
● what is contact?
● who can apply for contact?

LIVING TOGETHER AND THE LAW
Do you work with women who need advice on relationship breakdown?
This new half-day introductory course provides:
● an overview of the law relating to living together and property rights
● what is a common law wife?
● who can make claims against property or assets on separation?
● how can women protect their interest in property?
● what claims can be made on behalf of children?
● how will the Civil Partnership Act 2004 affect the rights of lesbians in respect of property and
assets?

SEXUAL VIOLENCE AND THE LAW
This new course to accompany Rights of Women’s new handbook From Report to Court: A handbook
for adult survivors of sexual violence provides:
● an overview of the criminal law particularly the Sexual Offences Act 2003
● what is the definition of rape and sexual assault?
● what is the definition of consent?
● what happens when a sexual offence is reported to the police?
● how can you support a woman going through the criminal justice system?
● other routes – civil claims and compensation

adult survivors of sexual violence

TRAINERS
All our trainers are women solicitors or barristers who are specialists in the area of
training.
Anjula Joshi is Legal Officer for Family Law at Rights of Women. She has practised law for over ten
years specialising in both public and private family law cases as a member of the Law Society’s
Family Law Panel and Children Panel. She has also been a member of the Solicitors Family Law
Association’s Children Committee.
Emma Scott is Senior Legal Officer at Rights of Women. She has practised law for over seven years
specialising in family law in particular in relation to divorce, separation and disputes involving
children. She has a particular interest in domestic violence and is Chair of the nia project (formerly
Hackney Women’s Aid).
Nadine Sime is Legal Officer for Sexual Violence at Rights of Women. She advises in relation to
rape, sexual assault and the criminal process on the dedicated Sexual Violence Advice Line. She
previously worked in private practice as a solicitor representing clients in civil and criminal law
proceedings.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT OUR COURSES
Book your place by completing the application form on the back of this booklet or downloading it
from our website at www.rightsofwomen.org.uk.
Free places may be available for organisations with a low income. Please contact us for details.
Confirmation of your place will be sent to you only when payment in full has been received.
Restrictions for attendance at our courses are a minimum of 6 participants and a maximum of 20.
Venue for all courses is the Britannia Conference Centre, 27 Britannia Street, London WC1X 9JP.
Nearest tube: Kings Cross, nearest station King’s Cross and Kings Cross Thameslink. The Britannia
Conference Centre is in the congestion charge zone and parking is available at car parks in the area.
Refreshments will be provided. Lunch will be provided for those attending both the Domestic
Violence and Child Contact Courses on 16th May and to those attending the Sexual Violence course
on 18th May.
Accessibility is key to us reaching as wide a group of participants as possible. The training venue
is fully accessible to wheelchair users; there is only one parking space for disabled drivers; an
induction loop is available. If you require an induction loop or parking space for disabled drivers or if
you have any other requirements (eg: written materials in different formats) please give details on
your application form.
Accreditation (CPD): Rights of Women’s training courses have been accredited by the Law Society
and Bar Council. All course grades are introductory, updating or for those returning to practice.
