ABOUT RIGHTS OF WOMEN<br />

<strong>Rights</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> works to atta<strong>in</strong> justice and equality by <strong>in</strong>form<strong>in</strong>g, educat<strong>in</strong>g and empower<strong>in</strong>g<br />

women on their legal rights. Founded <strong>in</strong> 1975, we are a not for pr<strong>of</strong>it voluntary organisation. Our<br />

core service is our advice l<strong>in</strong>e which <strong>of</strong>fers free, confidential legal advice to women. We also<br />

specialise <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g high quality, practical and accredited tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the area <strong>of</strong> women’s rights.<br />

Our <strong>courses</strong> are especially popular with community and voluntary organisations work<strong>in</strong>g directly<br />

with women. Our tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes are valued for mak<strong>in</strong>g the law transparent, accessible<br />

and user friendly, giv<strong>in</strong>g you the knowledge and skills to enable your service users to access<br />

justice.<br />

This tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is provided by women and is for women only. If you cannot attend on these dates or<br />

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND THE LAW<br />

● an overview <strong>of</strong> the civil law on domestic violence <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the new Domestic Violence Crime<br />

and Victims Act 2004<br />

● non-molestation and occupation orders<br />

for adult survivors <strong>of</strong> sexual violence provides:<br />

● an overview <strong>of</strong> the crim<strong>in</strong>al law particularly the Sexual Offences Act 2003<br />

● what is the def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>of</strong> rape and sexual assault?<br />

● what is the def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>of</strong> consent?<br />

● what happens when a sexual <strong>of</strong>fence is reported to the police?<br />

● how can you support a woman go<strong>in</strong>g through the crim<strong>in</strong>al justice system?<br />

● other routes – civil claims and compensation<br />

TRAINERS<br />

All our tra<strong>in</strong>ers are women solicitors or barristers who are specialists <strong>in</strong> the area <strong>of</strong><br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Anjula Joshi is Legal Officer for Family Law at <strong>Rights</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong>. She has practised law for over ten<br />

years specialis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> both public and private family law cases as a member <strong>of</strong> the Law Society’s<br />

Family Law Panel and Children Panel. She has also been a member <strong>of</strong> the Solicitors Family Law<br />

Association’s Children Committee.<br />

Emma Scott is Senior Legal Officer at <strong>Rights</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong>. She has practised law for over seven years<br />

specialis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> family law <strong>in</strong> particular <strong>in</strong> relation to divorce, separation and disputes <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

children. She has a particular <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> domestic violence and is Chair <strong>of</strong> the nia project (formerly<br />

Hackney <strong>Women</strong>’s Aid).<br />

Nad<strong>in</strong>e Sime is Legal Officer for Sexual Violence at <strong>Rights</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong>. She advises <strong>in</strong> relation to<br />

rape, sexual assault and the crim<strong>in</strong>al process on the dedicated Sexual Violence Advice L<strong>in</strong>e. She<br />

previously worked <strong>in</strong> private practice as a solicitor represent<strong>in</strong>g clients <strong>in</strong> civil and crim<strong>in</strong>al law<br />

proceed<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Restrictions for attendance at our <strong>courses</strong> are a m<strong>in</strong>imum <strong>of</strong> 6 participants and a maximum <strong>of</strong> 20.<br />

Venue for all <strong>courses</strong> is the Britannia Conference Centre, 27 Britannia Street, London WC1X 9JP.<br />

Nearest tube: K<strong>in</strong>gs Cross, nearest station K<strong>in</strong>g’s Cross and K<strong>in</strong>gs Cross Thamesl<strong>in</strong>k. The Britannia<br />

Conference Centre is <strong>in</strong> the congestion charge zone and park<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>available</strong> at car parks <strong>in</strong> the area.<br />

Refreshments will be provided. Lunch will be provided for those attend<strong>in</strong>g both the Domestic<br />

Violence and Child Contact Courses on 16th May and to those attend<strong>in</strong>g the Sexual Violence course<br />

on 18th May.<br />

Accessibility is key to us reach<strong>in</strong>g as wide a group <strong>of</strong> participants as possible. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g venue<br />

is fully accessible to wheelchair users; there is only one park<strong>in</strong>g space for disabled drivers; an<br />

<strong>in</strong>duction loop is <strong>available</strong>. If you require an <strong>in</strong>duction loop or park<strong>in</strong>g space for disabled drivers or if<br />

you have any other requirements (eg: written materials <strong>in</strong> different formats) please give details on<br />

your application form.<br />

Accreditation (CPD): <strong>Rights</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong>’s tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>courses</strong> have been accredited by the Law Society<br />
