RIFM AND IFRA TOGETHER PROTECT THE
CONSUMER AND THE ENVIRONMENT
RIFM and the International Fragrance Association (IFRA)
are two global organizations that work together for
fragrance ingredient safety. IFRA Standards are based on
RIFM peer-reviewed science, validated by independent
experts, and determine how fragrance ingredients can
safely interact with humans and the environment.
The RIFM/IFRA relationship allows for efficient
coordination of data from the science arena to action
(IFRA Standard) and the advocacy needs of the fragrance
industry. This special relationship between RIFM and IFRA
facilitates communication of informed scientific data on
the safe use of fragrance raw materials throughout the
global fragrance industry and to official agencies and
other interested parties around the world.
The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials
(RIFM), founded in 1966, is the international
scientific authority for the safe use of fragrance
materials. RIFM generates, evaluates and distributes
scientific data on the safety assessment of fragrance
raw materials found in fine fragrances, and other
personal and household care products. Through
extensive research, testing and constant monitoring
of pertinent scientific literature, RIFM performs
fragrance ingredient safety evaluations. All resulting
toxicological, environmental data, physical-chemical
properties, literature and information is maintained
in the most comprehensive Database, worldwide, of
known fragrance and flavor materials.

The RIFM Database: The most comprehensive database
of fragrance and flavor materials in the world.
RIFM SCIENCE
RIFM’s extensive scientific program provides the
most complete evaluations on the safe use of
fragrance raw materials and includes Human
Health, Respiratory, and Environmental endpoints.
All data collected by RIFM for their evaluations are
housed in the RIFM Database.
The Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA)
determines safe use levels of fragrance ingredients
in a variety of consumer product types to prevent
dermal sensitization.
The EDEN Project – the European Dermato-
Epidemiology Network (EDEN) under the guidance
of the Expert Panel designed an original study to
determine the prevalence of contact allergy in the
general population.
Aggregate Exposure Model – assesses
aggregated consumer exposure to fragrance
ingredients from various products in use daily by
the typical consumer.
RIFM is developing alternative methods for testing
fragrance materials for Human Health, Respiratory
and Environmental endpoints. A number of models
are available to RIFM Database subscribers.
RIFM Respiratory Models
▲ 2-Box Indoor Air Dispersion Model assesses
inhalation exposure.
▲ Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and
Multiple Path Particle Deposition (MPPD)
are in silico predictive dosimetry profilers that
locate and quantify materials deposited in the
respiratory tract to assess potential biological
effects following inhalation exposure.
AN EXPERT PANEL REVIEWS
RIFM SCIENCE
All of RIFM's scientific findings are reviewed by an
Expert Panel – internationally renowned
dermatologists, pathologists, toxicologists,
respiratory, reproduction and environmental
scientists. And, additional expertise is provided by
adjunct groups when needed. The Expert Panel
evaluates the safety of fragrance ingredients under
conditions of intended use and their independent
evaluations are published in peer-reviewed
scientific journals. The decisions of the Expert Panel
regarding restrictions of fragrance ingredient use
are also published as an IFRA Standard, available
to the public at www.ifraorg.org.
RIFM’s well-documented conclusions from
comprehensive analysis translate to enhanced
product management – resulting in safer
and more life-enriching products for the
consumer.
