coaching specific to your needs.

Beacon Site 

The six tennis sites are all 

accredited Beacon Tennis Sites. 

This means that the site is committed 

to delivering and promoting an 

accessible and affordable tennis 

programme for all.

Adults 

First time beginners - First time beginners 

is a new course for 2011. For adults who have 

little or no experience of playing tennis and 

would like to get into tennis, this course is an 

ideal introduction to the basics. 

Beginners - For players who are new to the 

game and have had no formal coaching in 

the past. The course will cover all of the basics 

including racquet skills, positioning and short 

matches to enable you to practise your newly 

acquired skills. Adults who haven’t played in 

years may want to take this course to brush 

up on their skills before moving onto the 

improver’s class. 

Tennis and fitness - Using tennis based 

exercises and drills this course is for those who 

would like to specifically improve their general 

fitness within a tennis environment. 

Juniors 

Mini tennis tots - Focusing on basic skills, 

tots tennis will help to increase confidence and 

develop social interaction skill, but more 

importantly the session will be great fun. 

There are courses for those aged 3 to 4 years 

and those aged 4 to 5 years. 

Mini tennis red - Mini tennis red is very 

important for building skills and confidence. 

The emphasis is on fundamental sporting skills 

such as movement and co-ordination, and an 

introduction to rallying and playing the game. 

Played on a smaller court with small tennis 

racquets and low bounce red balls, this is the 

easiest way for young children, primarily aged 

5 to 7 years, to play the game of tennis. 

Mini tennis orange - Mini tennis orange 

introduces children to playing on a ¾ length 

tennis court. The low bounce orange ball slows 

the game down to a speed that gives players 

time to play good basic tennis shots and have 

maximum fun playing the game. This is the next 

development stage in playing the full sized 

game. Normally 8 to 9 years depending on 

ability and the age at which a child started to 

play. 

Individual lessons 

Improvers - For those who have played the game before. 

The course will build on fundamental skills to develop your 

game through volleys, spin and tactics. An ability to play to 

a competent standard and serve from the baseline is 

required at this level. 

Intermediates - The courses will develop advanced strokes 

and serves for people who have been playing for a while. 

They will focus on the technique of tennis shots, while 

giving explanations on why you would want to hit the ball 

in a certain way and more importantly, where are the best 

places to hit and what are the best court positions to stand 

in. Singles and doubles tactics are also taught through a 

series of drills, games and structured practice, which will 

enable players to understand tactics and how to apply 

them in matches. 

Doubles - The focus of this course is doubles play, working 

on communication, strategy, tactics and court positioning 

while also building on defensive and attacking play. 

Mini tennis green - Mini tennis green is the final stage 

before children move to tennis. Played on a full size 

tennis court, the green ball is slightly lower bouncing than 

a normal tennis ball and helps the children to use good 

technique and rally consistently. Physical skills continue to 

be an important part of lessons. Normally age 9 and 10 years 

upwards depending on ability and the age at which a child 

started. 

Junior tennis beginners - Junior tennis beginners is a new 

course for this year and is for young people over the age of 

11 years who are new to tennis. 

Junior tennis improvers - Junior tennis improvers is 

specifically for young people over the age of 11 years who 

have played tennis before and wish to continue to improve 

their game. There will be a combination of learning the 

technique of all tennis strokes, improving players’ 

weaknesses and lots of match play. 

Teenage tennis - The next stage of development from 

junior improvers, for teenagers who have mastered the 

basic strokes of the game and can apply them in match 

play situations. This course will combine enhanced used 

of spin with singles and doubles tactics. 

Family tennis - This new course provides the opportunity 

for parents and carers to play tennis alongside their children 

with coaching to help both parties have fun and improve.

Terms and conditions 

Places for each course are booked on a first come first served basis. Late bookings will be 

accepted before the second session of a course, provided places are available and full 

payment is made. 

Please do not assume that you are automatically enrolled on subsequent courses. 

Payment must be made in full when booking and in advance of the course start date. 

Confirmation of a course is sent once a course is financially viable. 

Once payment has been made you have agreed to our terms and conditions. 

Payments cannot be made on a session by session basis. 

Late bookings will be accepted for a course provided places are available and full payment is 

received before the second session of a given course takes place. 

Cancellation of a booking. A minimum of 10 working days is required for the cancellation 

of a booking. After this period no refund will be made except in exceptional circumstances. 

If there are an insufficient number of bookings for a given course, the Sports Development 

Team reserves the right to cancel the course. Should this be necessary you will be informed 

a week before the course start date. 

If you are unsure whether the course will go ahead due to bad weather please contact the 

coach direct. 

In case of bad weather, time will be made up if possible, but refunds will only be issued if more 

than 50% of the course is cancelled. No credit notes will be issued. 

In any other circumstances when a session is cancelled refunds will be issued on an individual 

case basis. 

Suitable clothing and footwear (for example, trainers) must be worn. A coach has the right to 

refuse participants taking part where there is a health and safety issue. 

The Sports Development Team will not accept any responsibility for any persons where the 

relevant information has not been declared in order for them to participate fully in the course.
