A clever combination of working and living ‘lineAAR’ development in the centre of Aarau, Switzerland The development comprises 48 apartments, space for service and retail businesses as well as an underground car park. At the heart of the property is an attractive inner courtyard which forms the centre of this perimeter block development. The facade design underscores the homogeneous appearance of the building structure. The project was the winning entry of an investor competition and was developed by Rhomberg Bau AG in collaboration with architects Dietrich Untertrifaller. The solution has tremendous appeal. A new neighbourhood with about 800 apartments for rent and sale is being developed in Bern-Brünnen over the next few years. On behalf of the Publica Pension Fund, Rhomberg is acting as design and build contractor for the development of 47 rental properties by February/March 2010. The Westside shopping centre, which is in close proximity to the project, was also constructed by Rhomberg. This development comprises two four-storey apartment blocks with commercial space and an underground car park. The two blocks run parallel to each other on both sides of a courtyard, which is open to one side, and are adapted to the contours of the sloping terrain. The apartments appeal through their generous and modern design layout. Some of the living-rooms are one and a half storeys high. These features give the apartments a ‘loft’ feel. This commercial and residential property in Lucerne, Switzerland, other than the Säntispark in Abtwil, is the largest project in Switzerland which successfully uses Rieder facade elements. «Concrete Skin» A second skin made of glass fibre reinforced concrete Sustainable building envelopes are more and more in demand. Proof of that is the impressive refurbishment of a commercial and residential property in Lucerne which features glass fibre reinforced elements (Concrete Skin fibreC). The new facade consists of prefabricated storey-high elements which are quick to install and allow the continuing use of the building during refurbishment. The project features 1,800 m 2 of ivory coloured facade elements which have been fitted using an invisible preinstalled aluminium support system. Rubin Architekten AG in Bern-Worblaufen has been successfully working on the design and construction of residential, industrial, commercial and service sector buildings for about 30 years. Rhomberg Bau AG, which is a family-owned company, has established itself in the Bern region with the development of the high-profile ‘Westside’ leisure and adventure centre. Today these two companies together form a strong team. As of the 1 st of July 2009, Rhomberg Bau AG acquired the shareholdings of company founder Hans Rubin and co-owner Stefan Schärer. Rubin Architekten AG is now a fully owned subsidiary of Rhomberg and will continue trading under its existing name at its current location. At the same time, Rhomberg will relocate its Bern branch to the address of Rubin in Bern-Worblaufen. By using the synergies of the two experienced teams it is hoped to increase the group’s capacity in the Bern region.
