Construction and maintenance of heavy haul railways
Australia is renowned for its high capacity
freight trains and Track Australia
has not only finished the heaviest haul
railway in the world on behalf of Fortescue
Metals Group in Western Australia
(270 km, 40 t axle load), but has also
established itself to upgrade the freight
network of the Hunter Valley in New
South Wales. Whilst the company has
been able to continually strengthen its
market positioning in mechanised track
maintenance (tamping, lining, stabilizing,
ballast regulating), Track Australia
in partnership with Delkor Rail got
awarded a major periodic maintenance
contract by the Australian Rail Track
Corporation (ARTC) in 2008. Scope of
works include work planning, project
management, safety management and
delivery of track activities such as resleepering,
re-railing, turnout renewals,
track reconditioning, etc. Most activities
must be carried out in between trains
in very short track possessions.
Moreover, Track Australia commenced
the management of ballast cleaning
activities in the Hunter Valley one year
ago and has delivered five projects
which included all track and turnout
works for constructing new and
extending existing passing loops as
well as several rail bridges and level
crossing renewals. All projects are part
of the capacity increase and upgrade
programme in the Hunter Valley.

The Hunter Valley commences approx. 2 car
hours north of Sydney and comprises 700 km
of plain line track and 610 turnouts which are
designed for heavy haul railway.
