Crossing the Alps by train
Work is progressing rapidly on the Brenner feeder line
Berlin – Verona / Milan – Bologna – Naples –
Messina – Palermo rail link
1 OCtober 2008
The Alptransit Brenner consortium,
Rhomberg Bahntechnik GmbH and
Alpine Bau AG were awarded the – to
date – largest contract for a railway
construction project in Austria. The
beneficiary of the euro 260 million
project is ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG,
business division Unterinntal.
The task is to supply and install the
railway technology required for the
newly constructed 41 km section of
line in Unterinntal. This line from Kundl
to Baumkirchen runs predominantly in
2-track tunnels, troughs and subsurface
routes. It represents the central
link to the future Brenner Base Tunnel
and is a section of the railway axis
between Munich and Verona, which
will thus also make it a key part of
the “TEN 1” project from Berlin to
Palermo.
The new line at Unterinntal will
shorten travel times between Munich
and Innsbruck by 55 minutes and take
the strain off the existing line and
therefore also reduce noise pollution.
Goods and passengers will be transported
at speeds of up to 250 km/h.
NOVEMBER 2008
From the outset, time pressure is very
high. Regular, scheduled rail traffic is
already set to start in 2012. In order
to meet the tight schedule and the
quality challenges, the consortium
team headed by Robert Kumpusch
relocated from Bregenz to Terfen in
Tyrol just a few weeks after the project
was awarded.
RAILWAY TECHNOLOGY
REQUIREMENTS
In this project, the challenges take the
form of the high safety demands, the
required durability and – of course –
the cost-effectiveness of the project.
The consortium team headed by
Project Manager Robert Kumpusch
is responsible for coordination and
performance of the 13 different areas
of the contract work for the A1 part of
the project, as well as for the planning
of six further areas of the contract
work.
