The three blocks of project V111 on Max-Halle Strasse, also to a Passivhaus design, are already complete (right).
The largest residential development to Passivhaus standards in Vorarlberg V110/112 is being built on Arlbergstrasse in Bregenz (left).
Architects in conversation
Interview with architect Christian Matt from architects Dorner/Matt Bregenz/AUT
Is the outlook good for the success of the Passivhaus concept
in multiple-occupancy buildings?
Christian Matt: We can see changes in attitude to the way we use resources at all
levels of society. The subjects of energy generation and consumption are considered
on a much more scientific basis today than they were ten years ago. This has major
effects on multiple-occupancy buildings. I see the Passivhaus as part of a longer
term development within the framework of a universal Darwinian evolution and
certainly not as an end point.
Today we have adopted technology which is focused on achieving airtightness and
optimising insulation. In the medium term, we are certain to leave this path again and
concern ourselves with new technologies. I believe in the inventiveness of mankind.
Architect Christian Matt discusses
the future for the Passivhaus
and the requirements of his construction
partners.
What makes a construction project is a success or not?
Christian Matt: A successful project can only result if all the participants are treated as
equal partners. That means, everyone from the architect to the main contractor to the
craftsman must take the interests of the other stakeholders seriously. The way they
interact and how they communicate with one another play a critical role.
How do you find working with Rhomberg?
Christian Matt: The equal partnership approach I mentioned earlier worked very well
in our last cooperative project “Arlbergstrasse – Wohnen im Park”. And the Alpenländische
Heimstätte went well from the point of view of the client.
As an architect, what advantages do you see from having a
general contractor as a partner?
Christian Matt: Short communication channels, a single point of contact and last but not
least the ease of discussing technical matters are the crucial factors. We have also
found that by forming an expert team we can complete processes quicker without
the quality of the work and architecture suffering as a result.
Thank you for speaking to us!
