Edinburgh is pleased to be the first Scottish host of Britain
from the Air, a free Street Gallery of more than 100 stunning
aerial landscape photographs from around the UK.
"We are extremely proud to be chosen as a location for the
exhibition’s national tour. Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site will
provide the perfect setting for these breathtaking images".

The Street Gallery also features eleven aerial photographs of
striking locations in and around Edinburgh, illustrating why
Edinburgh is such a distinctive and beautiful city. Specially
selected by the City of Edinburgh Council, Marketing
Edinburgh, Essential Edinburgh and Edinburgh World
Heritage.
The Edinburgh images reveal the city’s dramatic landscape
setting, from Castle Rock to Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags.
They also show the striking contrast between the medieval
Old Town and the Georgian New Towns, and imposing
architectural landmarks such as the Scottish Parliament and
St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral.
A large-scale, walk-on Ordnance Survey map is located in
Festival Square. Join the walking trail through the city centre
at any point and at any time you like and enjoy the many
local sights, shops, restaurants and cafés en route.

‘I am delighted, as President of the Royal Geographical
Society (with IBG), to offer my enthusiastic support
for this exciting new joint project between the Society
and Wecommunic8, combining the Society’s leading
geographical knowledge with Wecommunic8¹s expertise in
street galleries.
The landscapes of Britain tell stories of our heritage, bring
alive the beauty of our environment, and challenge us all
to understand the changes taking place today in our towns
and cities. All too often, chasing far away places, we forget
just what beauty we have on our doorstep and just how rich
and diverse a country we live in.
I can think of no better time to celebrate Britain’s built
and natural landscapes. And the size and scale of Britain
from the Air will, I’m sure, appeal to the widest possible

Britain’s wonderful natural and man made landscapes, and to
see our changing environments and society in new ways. It
will enable all who see it to re-consider their perception of our
country’s landscape and to better grasp the impact of people
and nature on its geographical evolution.
From the physical impact of coastal erosion to rural
depopulation and from the development of transport networks
to the future of our cities, Britain from the Air will provide a
source of inspiration, pride and wonder.

The walk on map in Festival Square
A key feature of the Britain from the Air street gallery, a giant
walk on map of Britain offers visitors the unique opportunity
to truly view Britain from the air.
Created in precise detail by the Ordnance Survey, visitors
can walk the length and breadth of Britain, literally walking
over their home town and pinpointing the precise location of
each of the 100 images from the exhibition.
The map surround features a fascinating time line detailing
the history of Britain illustrated with images from the
exhibition. In addition, a history of maps drawing on rare
RGS archive material completes an engaging and educational
experience.

Britain from the Air is actively supported by online education
materials created by the Royal Geographical Society (with
the IBG). In addition there are teacher cards and other
merchandise available online and our retail shop.
