Observations<br />

The <strong>regeneration</strong> of cities usually <strong>in</strong>volves renovat<strong>in</strong>g old build<strong>in</strong>gs and warehouses as well as<br />

construct<strong>in</strong>g new build<strong>in</strong>gs and features. This topic has obvious l<strong>in</strong>ks to History, Geography,<br />

Citizenship, Art & Design. Key questions for observation dur<strong>in</strong>g and after a site visit <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

• Which build<strong>in</strong>gs are <strong>in</strong>trest<strong>in</strong>g and why?<br />

• Which build<strong>in</strong>gs are the oldest and which are the newest?<br />

• Have any build<strong>in</strong>gs been altered?<br />

• Are any build<strong>in</strong>gs decorated to look old?<br />

• What image is be<strong>in</strong>g projected by the build<strong>in</strong>gs?<br />

• What build<strong>in</strong>g materials have been used?<br />

Local historic build<strong>in</strong>gs make an excellent study for schools because they l<strong>in</strong>k the present, past and<br />

future, and fall with<strong>in</strong> the firsthand experience of pupils. Some of the <strong>Bristol</strong> attractions <strong>in</strong> located <strong>in</strong><br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g heritage build<strong>in</strong>gs are:<br />

• The At-<strong>Bristol</strong> Explore build<strong>in</strong>g – conta<strong>in</strong>s a listed railway goods shed built at the turn of the<br />

century.<br />

• The At-<strong>Bristol</strong> Wildscreen – <strong>in</strong>corporates an attractive Victorian leadworks.<br />

• The <strong>Bristol</strong> Industrial Museum – situated <strong>in</strong> a large old transit shed on the Float<strong>in</strong>g Harbour near<br />

Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Street bridge.<br />

• The British Empire and Commonwealth Museum – located <strong>in</strong> Brunel's historic Grade 1 listed<br />

Old <strong>Bristol</strong> Station at Temple Meads.<br />

• The <strong>Bristol</strong> Record Office and the CREATE Centre – occupy some of the n<strong>in</strong>e storeys of a<br />

former bonded warehouse <strong>in</strong> Cumberland Bas<strong>in</strong> at the entrance to <strong>Bristol</strong>'s Float<strong>in</strong>g Harbour,<br />

built <strong>in</strong> 1908 dur<strong>in</strong>g the boom <strong>in</strong> the tobacco import trade.<br />

Visitor questionnaires<br />

An area of urban <strong>regeneration</strong> which <strong>in</strong>cludes tourist attractions, sport and leisure facilities,<br />

shopp<strong>in</strong>g outlets, and eat<strong>in</strong>g and dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g venues is likely to attract a variety of visitors and<br />

therefore be a suitable place for conduct<strong>in</strong>g questionnaires. The questions can be tailored to focus<br />

more on the leisure and tourism topic or on the urban <strong>regeneration</strong> topic. A sample questionnaire is<br />

below.<br />
