Exist<strong>in</strong>g fieldwork resources<br />

The <strong>Bristol</strong> <strong>Harbourside</strong> Fieldwork Resource was developed by local teachers and funded by<br />

the <strong>Royal</strong> Institute of Chartered Surveyors (South West). It conta<strong>in</strong>s ideas for potential fieldwork<br />

opportunities alongside Key Stage 4 and 5 curriculum l<strong>in</strong>ks and teacher’s notes. It has a<br />

particular focus on susta<strong>in</strong>able development.<br />

The <strong>Royal</strong> Town Plann<strong>in</strong>g Institute (RTPI), South West Branch has produced a series of case<br />

studies for school teachers and students called Plann<strong>in</strong>g for Susta<strong>in</strong>ability on recent plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and environmental issues <strong>in</strong> the region. The packs, available onl<strong>in</strong>e, are ma<strong>in</strong>ly aimed at<br />

teachers and students aged from 14 to 18, particularly those study<strong>in</strong>g geography. Case Study 13<br />

The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) has a Gett<strong>in</strong>g out there<br />

programme designed to support and <strong>in</strong>spire trips <strong>in</strong>to the local built environment. One of their<br />

resources is The <strong>Urban</strong> Design Trail which is a one to two-hour walk<strong>in</strong>g tour <strong>in</strong> central <strong>Bristol</strong><br />

which can be used to generate ideas about the local environment and local history. Suitable for<br />

both primary and secondary age, it can be tailored to suit all Key Stages and covers citizenship,<br />

geography, history, art and design.<br />

Educational centres and support<br />

At-<strong>Bristol</strong> offers a variety of possibilities for educational visits. The Education Team at offers<br />

free admission for teachers to plan a visit, teacher preview even<strong>in</strong>gs, brief<strong>in</strong>g sessions and<br />

it<strong>in</strong>eraries to structure group visits, suggested activities to focus student visits, on-l<strong>in</strong>e and<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ted plann<strong>in</strong>g materials and post-visit follow up activities, a full programme of workshops, and<br />

themed events and specialist resources support<strong>in</strong>g curriculum requirements. Contact details: Tel<br />

The new Science Learn<strong>in</strong>g Centre South West, part of a national network, is a partnership<br />

between At-<strong>Bristol</strong>, the University of <strong>Bristol</strong> and the University of Plymouth. It provides<br />

Cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g Professional Development for everyone <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> science education at all levels<br />

and also acts as a focus for all the science learn<strong>in</strong>g activities <strong>in</strong> the region. There is a state-ofthe-art<br />
