From <strong>the</strong> Pilothouse<br />

Some might think th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> mid-winter m<strong>on</strong>ths here <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reedville Fishermen’s Museum<br />

might provide us with m<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>e quiet times, but th<strong>at</strong> is far from <strong>the</strong> truth. January and February<br />

provide both <strong>the</strong> staff and volunteers <strong>the</strong> time to c<strong>at</strong>ch up <strong>on</strong> everything from paperw<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>k to building<br />

maintenance to lots of activity in both <strong>the</strong> bo<strong>at</strong> shop and <strong>the</strong> model shop.<br />

While going through some old files, staff member Karen Rogers found a letter to <strong>the</strong> membership<br />

d<strong>at</strong>ed January, 1990 from Alice Butler, <strong>the</strong> President of <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>at</strong> th<strong>at</strong> time. Acc<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ding to this<br />

letter, f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> first time <strong>the</strong> Museum was instituting a membership fee. Annual dues were set <strong>at</strong> $10.00.<br />

At this time <strong>the</strong> Museum had approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 250 c<strong>on</strong>tribut<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>s whose d<strong>on</strong><strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>s, combined with a modest<br />

st<strong>at</strong>e grant and d<strong>on</strong><strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>s from industries rel<strong>at</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong> menhaden industry, had allowed <strong>the</strong> Walker<br />

House to be purchased and rest<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed. The museum’s leaders were ready to display artifacts in <strong>the</strong> two<br />

lower rooms of <strong>the</strong> Walker House and have <strong>the</strong> Museum opening to <strong>the</strong> public in April, 1990. The entire<br />

budget f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1990 was $39,603.<br />

Why this hist<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>y less<strong>on</strong>? I feel th<strong>at</strong> we need to keep in mind just how far <strong>the</strong> Museum has come<br />

since its early days and <strong>the</strong> tremendous debt of gr<strong>at</strong>itude th<strong>at</strong> is owed to <strong>the</strong> founders and early supp<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ters<br />

of this w<strong>on</strong>derful instituti<strong>on</strong>. When I walk around <strong>the</strong> Museum campus and see all th<strong>at</strong> is going <strong>on</strong><br />

and <strong>the</strong> interest th<strong>at</strong> we cre<strong>at</strong>e in our visit<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>s and volunteers alike, I am very gr<strong>at</strong>eful f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> visi<strong>on</strong> th<strong>at</strong><br />

brought <strong>the</strong> Reedville Fishermen’s Museum to life and has sustained its phenomenal growth over a rel<strong>at</strong>ively<br />

sh<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>t period of time.<br />

On to <strong>the</strong> future: <strong>the</strong> Board is quite excited to announce th<strong>at</strong> Mary Lou Hann who was <strong>the</strong> winner<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Osprey raffle last fall to raise m<strong>on</strong>ey f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> Save The Stack, has d<strong>on</strong><strong>at</strong>ed this beautiful carving to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Museum as a permanent exhibit. Carved by Herb Lewis of Fleet<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> life-size osprey perched <strong>on</strong><br />

an <str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>iginal brick from <strong>the</strong> Stack and complete with a carved menhaden <strong>at</strong> its feet is a spectacular example<br />

of <strong>the</strong> woodcarver’s artistry. We are looking f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ward to having it in <strong>the</strong> Museum where it will welcome<br />

our visit<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>s. The Museum is very appreci<strong>at</strong>ive of Ms. Hann’s generous d<strong>on</strong><strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> and is thrilled<br />

with this new additi<strong>on</strong> to our exhibits.<br />

Make plans now to join us f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> some <str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> all of <strong>the</strong> many activities menti<strong>on</strong>ed in this newsletter<br />

th<strong>at</strong> will be taking place throughout <strong>the</strong> spring and summer. As has always been <strong>the</strong> case f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> this museum,<br />

your c<strong>on</strong>tinuing supp<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>t and p<strong>at</strong>r<strong>on</strong>age are <strong>the</strong> c<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>e of our strength and <strong>the</strong> reas<strong>on</strong> we c<strong>on</strong>tinue to<br />

grow.<br />

Thank you,<br />

K<strong>at</strong>rina

FROM THE PRESIDENT<br />

Best wishes f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> a safe and prosperous 2012.<br />

This past year was ano<strong>the</strong>r successful <strong>on</strong>e f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>the</strong> Gre<strong>at</strong>er Reedville Associ<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>. Financially,<br />

we had a good year of fund raising<br />

with revenues exceeding expenditures by<br />

$64,000. Our balance sheet is str<strong>on</strong>g with<br />

assets of almost $2,000,000 and $500,000 of<br />

our assets are in liquid investments. F<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

2012 we are f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ecasting ano<strong>the</strong>r positive cash<br />

flow year.<br />

In 2011 we completed our fund raising eff<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts<br />

f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Save <strong>the</strong> Stack project. Funds<br />

have been set aside to place <strong>the</strong> d<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>s’<br />

plaque <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stack and to build a mem<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ial<br />

bench <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> museum. Special thanks are in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>der to Blaine Altaffer; Chairman of <strong>the</strong><br />

Stack committee, M<strong>on</strong>ty Deihl Co-Chair and<br />

our o<strong>the</strong>r twenty-two committee volunteers<br />

who brought this project to fruiti<strong>on</strong>. Also,<br />

special thanks are in <str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>der to all of you who<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tributed time and m<strong>on</strong>ey to this project.<br />

The Stack is a beautiful asset standing in tall<br />

tribute to our maritime heritage f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> many<br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>e gener<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>s to admire.<br />

The sl<strong>at</strong>e of officers f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> this year is as follows:<br />

Keith Dobs<strong>on</strong>—President; M<strong>on</strong>ty<br />

Deihl—Vice President; Ted Hower—<br />

Treasurer and Betty Mountjoy—Secretary.<br />

The bylaws of <strong>the</strong> Gre<strong>at</strong>er Reedville Associ<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong><br />

stipul<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> no direct<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> of <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ganiz<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong><br />

may hold <strong>the</strong> same officer positi<strong>on</strong> f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>e than two c<strong>on</strong>secutive years. Acc<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>dingly,<br />

Wayne Clark who is still <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board,<br />

had to rot<strong>at</strong>e out of his positi<strong>on</strong> of Vice President.<br />

We appreci<strong>at</strong>e all th<strong>at</strong> Wayne c<strong>on</strong>tributed<br />

as Vice President and <strong>the</strong> next time you<br />

see him, tell him job well d<strong>on</strong>e!<br />

Also special thanks are in <str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>der f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> Carol<br />

Towne who rot<strong>at</strong>ed off of <strong>the</strong> Board this year.<br />

Carol, as secretary f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2011, volunteered numerous<br />

hours to <strong>the</strong> Gre<strong>at</strong>er Reedville Associ<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong><br />

and she h<strong>on</strong>choed <strong>the</strong> most successful<br />

Oyster Roast in our hist<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>y. Give Carol a<br />

high five <strong>the</strong> next time th<strong>at</strong> you see her.<br />

Please join me in welcoming Mas<strong>on</strong> Brent to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Board. Mas<strong>on</strong> is a retired CEO of a n<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al<br />

propane c<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>p<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>; he currently sits<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> several o<strong>the</strong>r n<strong>on</strong>-profit entities<br />

and most imp<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>tantly is a 5 th gener<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong><br />

N<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>the</strong>rn Neck n<strong>at</strong>ive.<br />

At our regular Board of Direct<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>s meeting <strong>on</strong><br />

February 16, we held an electi<strong>on</strong> of officers.<br />

As we move throughout <strong>the</strong> year you will<br />

notice th<strong>at</strong> we are going to be c<strong>on</strong>tinuing<br />

with some of our stack fund raisers. However,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se fund raisers are earmarked f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> a<br />

different cause—Festival Halle. This Grand<br />

Lady is a valuable asset f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> our <str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ganiz<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong><br />

and she needs some tender loving care. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> weeks ahead we are going to get a professi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

assessment of wh<strong>at</strong> we need to do to<br />

protect and upd<strong>at</strong>e Festival Halle f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> an enduring<br />

future. As always, your supp<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>t is <strong>the</strong><br />

life line of our <str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ganiz<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Thanks,<br />

Fiddler’s Green<br />

Listen @ www.youtube.com/w<strong>at</strong>ch?v=9whbpYwk680<br />

A f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ecastle ballad, Fiddler’s Green is sail<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>s’ and fishermen’s versi<strong>on</strong> of heaven.<br />

A place where <strong>the</strong>re is no w<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>k, where you have a mug of beer th<strong>at</strong> refills itself, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are pretty ladies dancing to a sound of fiddle th<strong>at</strong> never ends. The idea of<br />

Fiddler’s Green was taken from an old Irish legend and adapted by sail<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>s because,<br />

<strong>at</strong> sea, <strong>the</strong> dying did not have <strong>the</strong> chance to get properly anointed and <strong>the</strong>ref<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>e did<br />

not have <strong>the</strong> chance to enter Christian heaven.<br />

RFM SUMMER CONCERTS<br />

The candlelight we had planned f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> ambiance became a necessity, when, <strong>on</strong><br />

Feb. 11th <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> "Calico Jack Coffeehouse C<strong>on</strong>cert," <strong>the</strong> power went off in Festival<br />

Halle and remained off f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> most of <strong>the</strong> night! Despite th<strong>at</strong> obstacle and<br />

low <strong>at</strong>tendance due to <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ecast, Janie Meneely and Paul DiBlasi<br />

displaying a true "<strong>the</strong>-show-must-go-<strong>on</strong>" <strong>at</strong>titude, introducing <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>at</strong>est CD to a most appreci<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

group, who delighted in <strong>the</strong>ir good (and goofy) hum<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> and gre<strong>at</strong> s<strong>on</strong>gs. We hope to have <strong>the</strong>m back this<br />

summer al<strong>on</strong>g with o<strong>the</strong>r maritime fav<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ites f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> 4th seas<strong>on</strong> of our Summer C<strong>on</strong>certs.<br />

Though <strong>the</strong> schedule is not yet c<strong>on</strong>firmed, we anticip<strong>at</strong>e 3-4 evening c<strong>on</strong>certs between May and August.<br />

Please stay tuned! Think of sultry summer evenings under <strong>the</strong> pavili<strong>on</strong> and plan to bring a picnic supper,<br />

lawn chairs, and friends and family to share in <strong>the</strong> entertainment. Your suggesti<strong>on</strong>s and requests<br />

are always welcome!<br />
