Ribera del Duero: Wines of Sun & Oak
The drive from Madrid airport to the town of Riaz in Ribera de Duero takes two hours or
thereabouts, a journey through Spain’s arid, occasionally desolate but beautiful, ochre-tinged
interior. This oasis of calm before a week’s intensive tasting, offers an opportunity to collect my
thoughts about the region. I had already covered its two most iconic estates, Vega Sicilia and
Dominio de Pingus in separate articles and ruefully postponed visits to either in order to focus
on other growers. As road-signs for Ribera del Duero start to appear, I ponder where it stands
within the pantheon of Spanish wine regions? Respected for sure, but it must yearn for the
ubiquitous familiarity of Rioja or even Cava, names that sell themselves to the masses. One
friend had bemoaned the heaviness and preponderance of Ribera del Duero’s wines and
stocked few in his shop. Another proclaimed Aalto “favorite wine in the world.” It was time to find
out for myself.
Ribera del Duero lies on the northern plateau of the Iberian Peninsula: 115-kilometers long and
35-kilometers wide. The valley itself was formed in the Miocene period, and is a landscape of
gently undulating hills and a relatively flat floor where the River Duero winds its way westwards.
Tertiary sediments of silt and clayey sand compose its topsoil with layers of limestone and marl
and occasional chalky deposits for roots to exploit underneath. There are just over 20,000
hectares of vineyard spread over four provinces: Burgos, Valladolid, Segovia and Soria. These
are home to around 270 bodegas, though like many Spanish wine regions the land is
fragmented into around 8,000 small growers selling their fruit to larger concerns.
One question that is often asked is whether the boundary of Ribera del Duero is too generous,
whether it includes potentially inferior terroir that can tarnish its overall reputation? José-Manuel
Ortega of O. Fournier has another take. He feels that during the boom years of the 1980s, vines
began to root on wrong soils that were too rich in organic matter and, to compound the problem,
used clones that yielded large clusters instead of old Ribera clones. I asked Colin Gent MW,
importer for Vega Sicilia among many others, his opinion.
“It all depends on what you want Ribera del Duero to be. If Ribera del Duero means fine red
wines combining power with elegance, then it has to be acknowledged that virtually all the
successful examples come from the western end of the DO. Those trying to make ambitious
reds from vineyards to the north and east are generally struggling to succeed,” he said. “But
even in the so-called Golden Mile, many wines are marred by under-ripeness, or over-ripeness
or a rather nasty combination of both. Throughout the entire DO area, viticulture conditions are
challenging, with a long winter and a short but sharp growing season. Getting it right in these
conditions is not easy. Basically, with the exception of Vega Sicilia, the whole region is on a
steep learning curve, the terroirs have yet to be mastered¼and just remember how long it took
the classic regions of France to master their terroir! Rather than dismiss large areas as
unworthy of DO status, I would argue that their future lies in perfecting styles of wine to their
soils and climatic conditions, more likely Joven, or light-extraction Crianza, plus of course crisp,
bright Rosado.”

Climate
Of course, one must always be careful about generalizing the climate of a region. There are
microclimates in Ribera del Duero just as there are anywhere else. The headline is the hot
summer temperatures when the thermometer can reach 40o degrees. Indeed, the mercury was
reaching 33o to 34o Celsius when I visited in September. However, in winter, temperatures can
plummet to -10 degrees or even lower. As one would expect, the vines are not short of sunshine
and the region averages 2,400 sunlight hours per annum, while rainfall is just 450mm per
annum (almost one-quarter that of Rías Baixas).
Practically every vine would answer to the name Tempranillo in Ribera del Duero. Or perhaps
some might not, since they might insist on the variety’s local name, Tinto Fino or Tinta del País.
The omnipresence of Tinto Fino and the resulting monovarietal wines means that you could
draw parallels with Burgundy, of course not in the style of wines, but the fact that both translate
theterroir of the land unobscured by the art of blending. This begs the question whether the
diversity of the Côte d’Or is as nuanced and variegated in the Ribera del Duero?
There is no question that Ribera del Duero is one of Spain’s premiere wine regions. Following in
the footsteps of Vega Sicilia, a countless number of winemakers have been able to exploit the
relatively benign growing season. Here, there is little risk of a wet vintage but rather a problem
of ensuring that the vines do not suffer hydric stress. When I visited in September, you could
see that the vineyards were becoming parched following a dry growing season. This is
where terroircomes into play, the age of the vine and depth of their roots eking out reserves of
moisture below. There is also money in Ribera del Duero. Driving across the region, you can
spot a number of wineries where proprietors clearly have deep pockets. On the one hand, this
can be a sign that winemakers have the financial liberty to apply exacting standards and Ribera
del Duero has definitely benefitted from that. On the other hand, it can also lead to a loss of
focus, appeasing tourists rather than getting the fundamentals of winemaking correct. Aalto was
a good case-in- point of the right way of doing things – experienced winemakers prioritizing the
less glamorous, functional parts of the winery that help create top-quality wine and getting that
in place before addressing the frills. Unfortunately that is not always the case – it usually
depends on the motives of the proprietor.
But tasting over 500 wines, I could find plenty of top-quality wine, many of which do not have
representation in the United States. Still, there are some caveats and you can probably guess
what they are.
Oak
Ribera del Duero can boast pockets of exceptionally old bush vine material that are the bedrock
of any aspiring wine region. I took some time to travel out to these pockets of gnarled, contorted
vines that populate its slopes. These low-yielding veterans can offer exceptional fruit in the right
hands, so it is occasionally dispiriting when all one can taste is the oak regime. Without wishing
to sound like a broken record, I will echo the sentiments of many commentators that Ribera del
Duero is too beholden to oak, especially expensive, showboating new French oak. Of course,
oak has an important role to play in the region and can enhance many of its wines. But neither
wine nor winemaker should ever become a slave to a cooperage. The ubiquity of oak renders a
degree of homogeneity across the Ribera del Duero that too often erases the subtleties and
nuances of its terroirs. The result is a paradox, whereby the supposedly finest and most
expensive labels that ought to be unique and distinguished, actually run the gamut of flavors
from A to B (to borrow my favorite Dorothy Parker quote.)

At worse, and this was a frequent problem in Ribera del Duero, the most expensive wine says
more about the cooper and occasionally the ego of the winemaker, rendered less drinkable than
superior mid-range wines unencumbered by techniques and practices. They are kings weighed
down by too many robes – and how can you reign over a kingdom when you can barely move
about? Readers have already been alerted to what I regard as a positive re-evaluation of the
role oak should play in wines and will hopefully recall Vega Sicilia’s winemaker Xavier Ausás
describing how used oak teaches Único “good manners” while Peter Sisseck has reduced the
level of new oak on Pingus from 200% to well under 100% – and falling. I hope winemakers
take heed of their approach and indeed that of other forward-thinking winemakers who are
adopting more prudent policies toward oak aging. For example, the sublime 2009 “Nic” from
José Alberto Calvo Casajús does not shy away from new oak, but the perspicacious use of 500-
liter instead of 225-liter Allier oak makes a huge difference, embroidering the oak into the
character of the wine instead of dominating it.
This philosophy was echoed by his fellow winemakers that I conversed with during my travels,
but not by all. There are some like Bodegas Hermanos Sastre whose top wines are still
dominated by oak, and you know, they are very good wines and people enjoy them. However, I
just happen to think that a) they would express their exceptional ancient vines better without
their wooden cloak and b) they would age even better because at relative high-alcohol levels
there is a greater tendency for overly generous new wood to dry out the wine.
I posed this question to Colin Gent.
“Many start-up bodegas clearly see new oak as ‘instant credibility,’ which may be a mistaken
obsession of the winery owner or marketing director as much as the winemaker. But I guess
there is also a theory that sweet, creamy new oak will balance – or mask – the naturally high
acid and austere character of Ribera del Duero fruit. This sort of cosmetic winemaking too often
reminds me of a party of 6-year old girls with a new make-up set. And while the oak flavor does
melt away with bottle age, the oak tannins do not. For me, one of the great problems, not just in
Ribera del Duero but throughout Spain, is poor quality new wood (staves not sufficiently
seasoned?) with a raw tannic imprint that never leaves the wine. Not being embarrassed to use
older oak would help, but the real issue here is that too many winemakers are looking at the
problem the wrong way round, and instead of seeking to mask negatives in the wine, they
should be concentrating on achieving natural balance and ripeness of acidity and tannins in
their musts.”
Alcohol
I touched upon alcohol levels in my previous paragraph. There is no getting away from the fact
that Ribera del Duero will always produce wines with comparatively high alcohol levels. Visiting
the region and noticing the lack of green vegetation, it is obvious that high summer
temperatures will always accelerate sugar levels that can only be partially mitigated via canopy
management, clonal selection and so forth. That is not to say that alcohol levels can simply be
ignored. Tasting through dozens of wines at the Consejo, I remarked upon the tendency of
wines to exhibit excessive volatility on the nose, while a percentage displayed incidences of
brettanomyces. Part of the reason for that would be unclean wineries and a tendency for
cellarmasters to be inured to the infection (prevalent in Bordeaux, I might add). In addition,
higher alcohol levels means higher pH levels and decreased effectiveness of SO2 to protect
wines from spoilage.

The Future
What seems clear to me is that Ribera del Duero is a wine region still in the process of
comprehending what it is exactly, what it should be, and where it should go. There is nothing to
be ashamed about that. It is a natural, empirical process of seeing what does and does not work
vis-à-vis the quality of wine and the appreciation/financial success from consumers.
I sincerely hope that winemakers will not feel subjugated by oak, that they should feel at liberty
to choose how much or how little they should employ with respect to each vintage. There is no
recipe for a great wine. If Ribera del Duero is to truly exploit its heterogeneous terroir, then it
needs to re-think its approach to new oak and exploit the possibilities of used wood and larger
vessels, notwithstanding paying close attention to exactly how staves are dried. I sense that the
region has a lot more variety to offer, much more than the blinkered pursuit of icon wines. In the
same way that I emphasized the joys of Crianza in Rioja, so these more approachable, less
manipulated and cheaper style of wines can open a whole new dimension to Ribera del Duero
and change preconceptions that it is a region that only offers turbo-charged, big, alcoholic reds.
There is a place for those wines of course, but there is no need to put all your eggs in one
basket, especially in straightened times when consumers are seeking out bargains and wines
with better quality/price ratios.
And price will be fundamental to Ribera del Duero’s future. The problem is that the region has
spawned two expensive icons, Único and Pingus, that are often misconstrued as mandates to
charge whatever you wish for top wines. Prices become a badge of honor. In some cases it is
justified, but all too often it was the “backwards” winemaking that was suggested in my
Argentina report, i.e. starting with a price and creating a wine that fits the bill. Occasionally,
some of the prices for the top cuvées were outrageous and dare I say, make Bordeaux look
cheap (yes¼that bad!)
“If you think this is a problem today, you should have checked Ribera del Duero prices eight to
ten years ago,” explained José-Manuel Ortega. “I called it ‘neighbor-plus price inflation’ – my
wine is better than my neighbor’s, so I will increase my prices by 15%. So we had a terrible
situation with worse wines coming into the market (due to new plantings in wrong areas and
with wrong clones) and ridiculous price increases. In recent years, as the economic situation
deteriorated, it brought lower prices which has made Ribera del Duero wines much more
competitive and increased export sales. We always believe that if a new winery wants to make
an impact, it has to be extremely competitive from a price-value perspective at any quality level.
I am afraid that such wines do not pull the wool over the eyes of this critic, nor indeed
consumers who pay through the nose for such wines that might be very fine, but do not live up
to unrealistic expectations.”
What is inevitable is that with markets struggling around the world, there will be a shake-up in
Ribera del Duero that will leave the strong brands standing: i.e. those that offer quality at a
reasonable price. Others will go to the wall, particularly those who entered on the coattails of
Pingus et al with the sole intention of making a quick buck. With prices for grapes at a low, now
might be the right time to replace some of the under-performing vineyards with superior clones.
That might cause suffering the short-term, but yield a stronger Ribera del Duero in the longterm.
Ribera del Duero has a great deal to offer. Some of the greatest Spanish wines I have ever
tasted come from this region. Not Rioja, not Priorat, but Ribera del Duero. The region should
embrace both traditional and modern styles of winemaking: there are markets that demand
both. The bottom line is that winemakers should feel free to create wines that do not conform to
international expectations, the marketing manager, critics or their next-door neighbor. Be truthful

to the terroir and the style of wine that you, the winemaker, aspires to create. That might be a
lighter, more elegant style of Tinto Fino; it could be something more substantial and long lived.
Experiment. Play around. See what works. Expand your horizons. What I hope to see is that
Ribera del Duero will realize that it has more tricks up its sleeve and a wider audience will
follow.
The Tastings
As ever, I embraced as many bodegas as I could during my stay, and once again, I must
sincerely thank the Consejo Regulador for organising a professional tasting environment that
allowed me to concentrate on the wines. The tastings covered a total of 117 wineries, so a
good representation of the D.O., with a proportion that are presently not imported into the United
States – a pity because some of them are worth seeking out. Indeed, I came away with the
sense that a more judicious selection of Ribera del Duero wines by importers might well lead to
a more positive reception from consumers!
