What Is <strong>Soil</strong><br />

<strong>Compaction</strong>?<br />

Change the following properties in a favorable direction:<br />

Strength<br />

Compressibility<br />

Volume stability (shrink-swell potential)<br />

Hydraulic conductivity<br />

Erodibility<br />

These properties generally become favorable as soil<br />

density increases.<br />

Disadvantages<br />

“Overcompaction” can result in:<br />

Increased swelling in clay soils.<br />

Goals<br />

To determine the relationship between water content and dry unit<br />

weight of a soil from San Diego’s Camp Elliot army base.<br />

The soil will be used to provide foundation for bridge abutments.<br />

Method<br />

The soil is placed in 5 layers into a 6 in. diameter mold.<br />

Each layer is compacted by 56 blows of a 10 lbf rammer dropped<br />

from a distance of 18 in., giving the soil a compactive effort of about<br />

56000 ft-lbf/ft 3.<br />

What Does This Mean?<br />

95% range of soil’s water content for optimum density.<br />

The soil at Camp Elliot will work best with a water content<br />

of anywhere between 7.57 – 11.5%.<br />
