<strong>Primary</strong> <strong>school</strong> <strong>menus</strong>


Dear parent or guardian<br />

A healthy and nutritious diet is<br />

essential <strong>to</strong> your child’s growth and<br />

development and can decrease the risk<br />

of obesity and other health problems.<br />

The Schools (Health Promotion and<br />

Nutrition) Act (Scotland) requires all<br />

Local Authorities <strong>to</strong> ensure that food and<br />

drink provided in <strong>school</strong>s comply with<br />

national nutritional requirements.<br />

Research shows that a pupil’s behaviour<br />

and concentration improves when<br />

they eat a balanced meal at lunchtimes.<br />

One of our main aims is <strong>to</strong> encourage<br />

children <strong>to</strong> eat more fruit and vegetables<br />

and less fatty foods.<br />

In this way we can influence their<br />

eating habits and help them <strong>to</strong><br />

understand the long term health<br />

benefits of a balanced diet.<br />

All <strong>school</strong>s offer a choice, including hot<br />

meals, hot/cold lunch bags, salads and<br />

desserts. We try and cater for a wide<br />

range of tastes and we offer a vegetarian<br />

option on request. We hope that your<br />

child will join us at lunchtime and we<br />

look forward <strong>to</strong> welcoming them!<br />

Nutritional standards<br />

for <strong>school</strong> lunches<br />

We take great care of what we have in our <strong>menus</strong>. Not just <strong>to</strong> meet legal<br />

requirements, but because we want our <strong>school</strong> meals <strong>to</strong> be healthy, nutritious<br />

and enjoyable.<br />

At least two types of vegetable, mixed salad and bread must be provided each day,<br />

and an oily fish at least once every three weeks as part of the <strong>school</strong> lunch.<br />

The Eatwell Plate<br />

The eatwell plate shows the food groups and healthy balance delivered through our<br />

<strong>school</strong> meal service.

Chicken Curry (serves 4)<br />

Ingredients:<br />

50g Onions<br />

1 clove Garlic<br />

10ml Vegetable oil<br />

10g Plain flour<br />

1 tsp Curry powder<br />

1 tsp Toma<strong>to</strong> puree<br />

2 tsp Mango chutney<br />

230ml Water<br />

1 Chicken s<strong>to</strong>ck cube<br />

240g Diced cooked chicken<br />

Method :<br />

Gently cook the onion and garlic without<br />

colouring. Mix in the flour, curry powder<br />

and cook gently <strong>to</strong> a sandy texture<br />

(2 minutes). Mix in <strong>to</strong>ma<strong>to</strong> puree and<br />

mango chutney. Gradually add the<br />

boiling s<strong>to</strong>ck and mix <strong>to</strong> a smooth sauce<br />

– simmer for 20 minutes. Add cooked<br />

chicken, heat through for another<br />

20 minutes and serve with boiled rice.<br />

Vegetarian option:<br />

Replace diced cooked chicken and<br />

chicken s<strong>to</strong>ck cube with Quorn pieces<br />

and vegetable s<strong>to</strong>ck cube.
