Jesus and <strong>the</strong> Demons:...<br />

313<br />

to this step state <strong>the</strong> composition <strong>of</strong> place by <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> corporeal<br />

senses with <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ation:<br />

«First Prelude. The first Prelude is <strong>the</strong> composition, which is here to<br />

see with <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>the</strong> length, breadth and depth <strong>of</strong><br />

Hell. Second Prelude. The second, to ask for what I want: it will be<br />

here to ask for <strong>in</strong>terior sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> damned suffer, <strong>in</strong><br />

order that, if, through my faults, I should forget <strong>the</strong> love <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eternal<br />

Lord, at least <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>s may help me not to come <strong>in</strong>to s<strong>in</strong>» 14 .<br />

Then Ignatius states an illustrative po<strong>in</strong>t for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> every s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

physical sense that must be helped by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellect and <strong>the</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ation,<br />

which makes more effective <strong>the</strong> total experience that <strong>in</strong>volves <strong>the</strong> body,<br />

<strong>in</strong>tellect, and spirit:<br />

«First Po<strong>in</strong>t. The first Po<strong>in</strong>t will be to see with <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

<strong>the</strong> great fires, and <strong>the</strong> souls as <strong>in</strong> bodies <strong>of</strong> fire. Second Po<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

The second, to hear with <strong>the</strong> ears wail<strong>in</strong>gs, howl<strong>in</strong>gs, cries, blasphemies<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st Christ our Lord and aga<strong>in</strong>st all His Sa<strong>in</strong>ts. Third Po<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

The third, to smell with <strong>the</strong> smell smoke, sulphur, dregs and putrid<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs. Fourth Po<strong>in</strong>t. The fourth, to taste with <strong>the</strong> taste bitter th<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

like tears, sadness and <strong>the</strong> worm <strong>of</strong> conscience. Fifth Po<strong>in</strong>t. The fifth,<br />

to touch with <strong>the</strong> touch; that is to say, how <strong>the</strong> fires touch and burn<br />

<strong>the</strong> souls».<br />

This methodology is applied to every step <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exercise, start<strong>in</strong>g<br />

systematically with <strong>the</strong> composition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> place or <strong>the</strong> life sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mystery that supposes to be meditated on. As for <strong>in</strong>stance, dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

second week <strong>the</strong> retreatant must meditate <strong>the</strong> mystery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nativity,<br />

but as a prelude to it, <strong>the</strong> person must do <strong>the</strong> composition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> order to experience <strong>the</strong> mystery <strong>in</strong> a personal and <strong>in</strong>timate manner.<br />

«Second Prelude. The second, a composition, see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> place. It will<br />

be here to see with <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>the</strong> road from Nazareth<br />

to Bethlehem; consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> length and <strong>the</strong> breadth, and whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

such road is level or through valleys or over hills; likewise look<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

<strong>the</strong> place or cave <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nativity, how large, how small, how low, how<br />

high, and how it was prepared... First Po<strong>in</strong>t. The first Po<strong>in</strong>t is to see<br />

<strong>the</strong> persons; that is, to see Our Lady and Joseph and <strong>the</strong> maid, and,<br />

after His Birth, <strong>the</strong> Child Jesus, (I) mak<strong>in</strong>g myself a poor creature and<br />

a wretch <strong>of</strong> an unworthy slave, look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong>m and serv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong><br />
