Jesus and <strong>the</strong> Demons:...<br />

333<br />

As a consequence <strong>of</strong> what was expla<strong>in</strong>ed, it can be concluded that <strong>the</strong><br />

demons’ see<strong>in</strong>g can be regarded as meta-physical s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y are considered<br />

<strong>spiritual</strong> entities who perceive what is proper <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> supernatural realm,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>refore one can be <strong>in</strong> agreement with <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> Athanasius<br />

<strong>in</strong> his work entitled On <strong>the</strong> Incarnation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Word 32.4: «<strong>the</strong> spirits<br />

especially see through what is unseen by human eyes» 61 .<br />

5. Conclusions<br />

The episodes <strong>of</strong> visual perception treated previously exhibit different<br />

semantic levels <strong>of</strong> comprehension connected with <strong>the</strong> aspect <strong>of</strong> see<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The demons, for example, who are <strong>the</strong> characters that function <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

narrative as <strong>the</strong> antagonist <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hero, present a <strong>spiritual</strong> see<strong>in</strong>g capable<br />

<strong>of</strong> perceiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e manifestation hidden under <strong>the</strong> human condition;<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same way Jesus sees with <strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>of</strong> God catch<strong>in</strong>g sight <strong>of</strong><br />

what is hidden to <strong>the</strong> human eye, but <strong>the</strong> outcome and <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir see<strong>in</strong>g are radically opposed. The <strong>spiritual</strong> see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se personages,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, manifest diverse semantic levels that are <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong><br />

contexts <strong>of</strong> exorcisms, heal<strong>in</strong>g, div<strong>in</strong>e manifestation <strong>of</strong> God, vocation,<br />

<strong>in</strong>struction, etc. For this reason, as manner <strong>of</strong> a conclusion, it is possible<br />

to highlight five l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> semantic dimension <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

«<strong>spiritual</strong> see<strong>in</strong>g» rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sically related to different fields <strong>of</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text.<br />

a) The see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christological dimension: <strong>the</strong> passages manifest an essential<br />

relationship between <strong>the</strong> «see<strong>in</strong>g» and Jesus’ identity. Right from<br />

<strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Mark’s <strong>Gospel</strong> <strong>the</strong> double celestial object <strong>of</strong> Jesus’ vision<br />

and <strong>the</strong> hear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e voice <strong>of</strong> God <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r established<br />

<strong>the</strong> pattern <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e sonship <strong>of</strong> Jesus, a Tr<strong>in</strong>itarian dimension that<br />

qualifies his Christological identity (Mark 1:10-11) 62 . The encounter<br />

with <strong>the</strong> demoniacs cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong> same l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ological thought,<br />

manifested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> demons’ voice as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir characteristic reaction<br />

which starts always with a «see<strong>in</strong>g» that leads to <strong>the</strong> acknowledgement<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> superior power <strong>of</strong> God. Their proclamation expresses <strong>the</strong> truth<br />

about Jesus that beg<strong>in</strong>s with <strong>the</strong> <strong>spiritual</strong> visual perception. But <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

oral manifestation is not totally equivalent to <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e voice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
