Jesus and <strong>the</strong> Demons:...<br />

321<br />

<strong>the</strong> action <strong>of</strong> descend<strong>in</strong>g is dove-like 26 . The notion <strong>of</strong> a «dove» can<br />

have multiple <strong>in</strong>terpretations; it has been considered <strong>the</strong> symbol <strong>of</strong><br />

all k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> virtues, particularly by cause <strong>of</strong> its gentleness, <strong>in</strong>nocence,<br />

and goodness that <strong>in</strong>spired this position 27 . But accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Old<br />

Testament tradition, <strong>the</strong> rabb<strong>in</strong>ic <strong>in</strong>terpretation gives to <strong>the</strong> reader a<br />

conception that is closer to <strong>the</strong> biblical m<strong>in</strong>dset manifested <strong>in</strong> Mark.<br />

Rashi comment<strong>in</strong>g on Gen 1:2 affirms: «The Spirit <strong>of</strong> God was mov<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

<strong>the</strong> Throne <strong>of</strong> Glory was stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air and mov<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> waters by <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mouth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy One, blessed be he,<br />

and by his Word like a dove that broods on <strong>the</strong> nest» 28 . In <strong>the</strong> Midrash<br />

Rabbah, Rabbi Simeon ben Zoma expresses regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same text <strong>of</strong><br />

Genesis <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g idea: «For it is not written here, and <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong><br />

God blew, but hovered, like a bird fly<strong>in</strong>g and flapp<strong>in</strong>g with its w<strong>in</strong>gs» 29 .<br />

The connection is strong with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gospel</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> God is<br />

portrayed as a bird or dove, and it is framed <strong>in</strong> a context <strong>of</strong> creation<br />

hover<strong>in</strong>g upon <strong>the</strong> waters. These elements illum<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> Mark<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baptism a new creation <strong>in</strong> Christ where <strong>the</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>itarian<br />

perception is explicit and exclusive <strong>of</strong> Jesus. The celestial voice <strong>in</strong> Mark<br />

1:11 re-affirms <strong>the</strong> relationship <strong>of</strong> love between Fa<strong>the</strong>r and Son <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

new state that assumes <strong>the</strong> human condition.<br />

The passages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> call<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first disciples demonstrate <strong>the</strong><br />

special see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Jesus, which manifests <strong>the</strong> manner how God sees. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> vocation, Jesus’ see<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>the</strong> first step <strong>in</strong> his method <strong>of</strong><br />

choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> prospective disciples. Mark <strong>in</strong>dicates Jesus’ see<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong><br />

aorist eiden: «he saw» <strong>in</strong> three significant passages 30 :<br />

– Mark 1:16: «And as He was go<strong>in</strong>g along by <strong>the</strong> Sea <strong>of</strong> Galilee, He saw<br />

(eiden) Simon and Andrew, <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Simon, cast<strong>in</strong>g a net <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sea; for <strong>the</strong>y were fishermen».<br />
