The German electronic-music composer Carsten Nicolai (known as Noto)
makes you think about the future of music,...
ALVA NOTO
Carsten Nicolai
-Berlin based sound artist Carsten Nicolai aka alva.noto has established himself as a leading member in the realm of
electronic sound and visual designers whom are using art and music as hybrid tools to create microscopic views of creative
processes.
Nicolai has performed and created installations in many of the world‘s most prestigious spaces including The Guggenheim
NYC, MOMA SF, MOMA Oxford, NTT Tokyo, and BiennaleVenedig Italy. He is also a member of the exceptional label,
Raster-Noton, responsible for the acclaimed CD series ‚20‘ to 2000‘ that went on to win the ‚Golden Nica‘ prize at Prix
Ars Electronica 2000.
alva.noto plays with the rules of physicality. Sound is changed and evolved into time and space sinustones made use by
looping oscillators, tone generators and modem sounds - the essense of pure electricity becomes audible. „transform“ could
be referred to as ‚posthuman funk‘- Nicolai works without sequencers, but mathematically edits the album to give his
compositions precise rhythmic structures.
Clicks and glitches are not used as ornamental additions to the compositions but make up the essential elements. These sound
sources are applied to the rhythmic groove of Hip-Hop and R&B. Like nothing you have ever heard, alva.noto ignores the
limits between genres and brings experimentalism one step closer to the clubs.

The soundworks of Carsten Nicolai confront the viewer - and listener – with the dichotomy between electricity and
electronics hinted at by Virilio. Electronics come prepacked; they harness the raw natural power of electricity by converting
it from direct to alternating current; compress it ready for extrusion through microchips installed within miniaturised
components. Electronics readies electricity for the marketplace, and commodifies its power through ever proliferating infinities
of electronic goods. The marketplace channels production towards standardization, and this is as applicable to washin.....In
the absence of comforting reference points such as repetitive rhythms or vocals, these sounds drift between the speakers, or
between earphones, like sonic Rorschach blots.
The German electronic-music composer Carsten Nicolai (known as Noto) makes you think about the future of music, and
when he performed his work, it was easy to feel that he was part of a much larger societal movement. ...Nicolai is putting
his energies toward something that isn‘t music in the traditional sense. He is a sound-researcher looking for new palettes,
and he has only a slight aptitude in regard to form.
For better or for worse, his work can sound like speculation -- in the gold mining sense -- more than composition....Nicolai
samples the sounds of electronic information transmission – fax tones, modem sounds, telephone pops and clicks -- and
organizes them into loops, to which he adds longer electronic tones in the background and foreground as the piece progresses.

ALVA NOTO – TRANSRAPID EP
( RASTER NOTON / 051 )
REVIEW DE:BUG 67 - 01.2003
Raster Noton records tend always to be something other than standard vinyl releases; more like designs for spaces , or interior
places. Once again, this is particularly true for the new Alva Noto EP.
TRANSRAPID acts as a sort of test, something that may be witnessed, passing between loudspeakers. Within this space,
sparks fly through chrome funk, while references come in waves and audibility progresses towards the tangible. However, this
record cannot just be registered within set parameters and thus classed as abstract music.. like breath across the ear, there is a
source, it has a location.
The four pieces of music here fit perfectly to the TRANSFORM Cd. With intense detailing, crackle and finely-tuned digital
offcuts, the record comes together in an aesethically developed and personalised piece of independent work. This is a new form
of pop music, while at the same time conscious of how Kraftwerk should really be sounding right now.
