Table B.1 compares the number of personnel at in each rank in the infantry and artillery specialties existing before Calhoun’s proposal (pre) and the number recommended by Calhoun for a peacetime army (post). The data are derived from Table E of Report of the Secretary of War of a Plan for the Reduction of the Army of the United States (1820).
