CURRENT PROJECTS
National Institute of Drug Abuse Role: Investigator 9/2011 – 08/2015
“Implementation of Medical Marijuana and Its Impact on Health”
The overall goal of this four-year project is to provide the most complete accounting to date of
the nuanced features of medical marijuana laws and their implications for health at three
geographic levels: state, county and local neighborhoods. County and local analyses are limited
to California.
National Institute of Justice Role: Investigator 10/2012 – 3/2015
“National Evaluation of District Attorney Diversion Programs”
Pre-Trial Diversion is a program offered to certain offenders who qualify for participation as an
alternative to prosecution. Participants receive coordinated assistance in personal and group
counseling, drug and alcohol rehabilitation and other community agencies appropriate to their
needs. The purpose of this 30-month project is to better understand the effectiveness and costs
associated with a diversity of defendant samples and program sites. We will analyze the process,
impacts and costs of district attorney’s pretrial diversion programs in multiple sites.
National Institute of Justice Role: Investigator 10/2012 – 9/2015
“Evaluation of a Police Training Program to Prevent/Intervene in Domestic Radicalization”
To help the U.S. government counter domestic radicalization, RAND will evaluate a law
enforcement training program in different geographic locations to assess the near-term and
longer-term impacts. We focus primarily on tools designed for state, local, and tribal law
enforcement officers to understand, detect, deter, and investigate acts of terrorism in the United
States by both international and domestic terrorists.
National Institute of Justice Role: Investigator 10/2009 – 9/2013
“Predictive Policing: Analytical and Evaluation Research Support”
The purpose of this 4-year project is to evaluate sites conducting predictive policing projects.
Sites have implemented a predictive police strategy for a number of reasons including for
example to reduce tactical crime. RAND is responsible for evaluating the processes and costs of
implementation and to provide research support in conducting the evaluation methodology to
understand project impacts within a site (between their control and treatment groups).
