Spring Sportscaster
Athletic Director - Tom Zaccone - My one Spring Season as the R.H.S. Athletic Director proved
to be an exciting one. The Track Team we the Division „B‟ County Relay Champions, and both the Boys
Baseball Team and Girls Softball Team had successful seasons making it to the State Sectional Finals.
Within the new Big North Conference the story was the same or above “excitement”. The Boys Track Team
were the Patriot Division Champs, along with the Boys Baseball Team, which also won their division. The
Girls Softball Teams finished second in their division, to powerful Indian Hills.
Our Tennis team also had one of their most successful seasons, finishing second in their division with a 15 – 4
record advancing to the Semi Finals, losing to the eventual champs, Pascack Hills 3 – 2.
Both the boys and the girls Golf Teams continued at the same level of success as the have shown in recent
years. The girls finished with a 16 – 3 record and the boys were 12 – 8.
I would like to take this opportunity to express how much I enjoyed my short stay as your Athletic Director.
The Administrators, faculty and student body made me feel “right at home”.
Lou Molino always told me that Ramsey was a special high school, and now I have seen it first hand. Ramsey
High Schools success in Athletics is a result of great student athletes being coached by a great coaching staff. I
was thrilled to be a “Ram” albeit for a short time.
Varsity Baseball - Head Coach Bill Chesney
The 2011 Varsity Baseball Team showed great pride, determination, and camaraderie. Many different players
stepped up and did a great job when opportunities presented themselves. As a result of everyone‟s hard work
and desire, the 2011 Varsity Baseball Team had a very successful season, compiling a record of 19-9. We
played deep into the State Tournament before falling in the finals. This year‟s team also went deep into the
County Tournament before losing in the semi-finals. We also won the Big North Patriot Division title, the forth
straight division title with a record of 7-5. This was quite an accomplishment considering that the Patriot
division is considered one of the best baseball divisions in the Big North. The season started off a little rocky
with the Rams posting a 2-3 record over the first 5 games. The team showed it‟s heart and character by going
11-4 over the next 15 games. Our record improved to 13-7 before the county cutoff giving the Rams a 13 seed
in the tournament. In the prestigious Bergen County Tournament, the Rams opened with a victory over
Rutherford and then went on to beat previously unbeaten pitchers from Emerson and Glen Rock to advance to
the semi-finals. During the regular season the Rams bounced back with a mercy rule win over Northern
Highlands and a solid win over division rival Indian Hills. The Rams also qualified for the State Tournament
receiving a #5 seed. In the State Tournament things began to fall into place. The state campaign began by
facing a scrappy Westwood squad in the first round. The Rams rose to the occasion by beating Westwood 7-2

for the second time this season. The second round had the Rams facing Pompton Lakes. The bats came alive
and the Rams erupted for a 16-5 victory. In the state semi-finals the Rams had all the confidence and
determination we needed. Having lost to Mahwah twice earlier in the season we played a near perfect game and
came away with a 3-2 victory over the Thunderbirds and advancing to the State Sectional Championship for the
second straight year. The victory earned us an away game versus Dumont. Faced with adversity and falling
behind 6-0 early, the Rams fought back pulling to within 8-5 before losing the game. When tested and tried all
year this team responded and came back more determined and focus then before. Unfortunately, as most
seasons end, unless you win the entire State Championship the season would end with a loss. All the players
should be proud of their hard work and accomplishments. They never gave up and always picked up their
teammates. We used a combination of great pitching and defense along with a solid offense to put together a
great season. This year‟s team compiled some impressive stats; overall record 19-9, league record 7-5, BA.325,
OBP .398, 12 HR‟s, 53 doubles, 5 triples and 200 runs scored in 28 games. Winning is not a result of showing
up in April and thinking you can just turn it on. Winning takes hard work, and an attitude of teamwork and
determination. This team will be missed greatly. They should be very proud of the season they have had. The
members of this years Varsity Baseball Team were Seniors; Brian Bohmert, Bill Botz, Rob Caliento, Danny
Cammarano, Vince Fiori, Chris Mellis, Kyle Nelson, Matt Reiher, and Luke Rosenberger. Juniors: Zack
Borglum, Kyle Costello, Tom Gawron, Zack Jones, Kevin O‟Keefe, Joe Salerno, PJ Scandariato, Taylor Vozeh,
and Dan Zaloom. Sophomore: Nick Dispoto.
J.V. Baseball - Coach Tim Cichewicz
The JV Boys Baseball team had a tremendous season. We finished with a 12-3-2 record. Great hitting and
great pitching were the keys to our success. This team should a lot of determination and enthusiasm throughout

the entire season, and really showed how good Ramsey baseball can be with our play on the field and our
positive attitudes at practice and in the dugout.
Austin Girogio was our leadoff hitter, not thrived on getting on base, but played a very solid defensive
shortstop. Jon Kase handled the pitching staff behind the plate, and knocked in some key runs batting in the
fifth spot. Mike Reiher was our three hitter and third baseman, driving in runs and making plays before he got
his call up to the varsity. Max Galperin also contributed at third base, and also saw some time on the mound as
he came back to Ramsey baseball. Pat Corrigan played second and batted in the two spot, showcasing a nice
swing as he drove baseballs into the gap. Pat also pitched very well, including the last game versus Wayne
Hills to solidify a great season. Andrew Losos also flashed the leather at second base and provided some key
hits for us throughout the season. Pat Kiley was starting pitcher and first baseman, leading the team in
homeruns. In addition, Pat also saw some time at third, and playing good defense over there as well. Nick
Cianciaruso was another first baseman who got to see some key innings throughout the season. Sean O‟Keefe
also played first and right field, showing diversity and the ability to move positions throughout the year
successfully. Kevin O‟Keefe played third base, right field, and also DH. He provided power in the middle of
the lineup with blistering line drives. Chris Kolb was solid defensively in right field and gave us some huge hits
batting in the seven spot. Brian Kopcyznski played center with a quiet intensity. He also drove in some big
time runs batting in the sixth and eighth spots. Josh Anderson also played centerfield with good defense, and he
also showed a lot of poise on the mound as another of our starting pitchers. Reid Nelson played left field, and
started to really show some power near the end of the season. He also gave us a nice bat in the nine spot.
I wish this team the best of luck as they continue with their academic and athletic careers at Ramsey High
School. They have done their school and coach proud.
Frosh Baseball - Coach Vic Tribuzio
The 2011 freshman baseball team compiled a 7-10 record this season. They started slowly but came on to a
winning second half record. The boys collectively batted .300 this season and made great strides toward
improvement. The boys worked hard each practices and made a commitment to improving their baseball skills.
The boys should contribute to the varsity program admirably in years to come. The members of the 2011
freshman baseball team are: Danny Calleo, Chris Cerf, Brian Donovan, DJ Kleinbard, Tom Saccente, Tom
Huth, Chris Butryn, Scott Jezequel, Nick Catalano, Mike Desimone, James Boyle, Griffin Robblee, Jon
Mastroberti, Matt Lucas, Connor Shetler
Varsity Softball - Head Coach – Chris Caserta
To say that the 2011 Lady Rams softball season was a successful one is a complete understatement. The team
finished with an overall record of 21-6, giving Ramsey softball its first back-to-back 20 win season in over a
decade. The girls found themselves in the Records‟ top 25 week in and week out and finished the year in the
top 15 in North Jersey. The girls worked extremely hard in both the offseason and preseason to achieve this
feat. The Lady Rams improved in every way from the previous year earning more wins (21), advancing further
in the counties (quarter finals), and even making it to the state sectional championship game (the first
appearance since 1999).
The softball team started off the year red hot earning seven straight wins, including a 1-0 victory over the
previous state and county champions Indian Hills. The great start to the year earned the team one of the highest
seeds in the county tournament (#4), including a home game versus Garfield in a game they would win 8 to 1.

The girls would go on and compete in a few tough regular season contests setting the stage for the second round
of the county tournament where they all played part in a no hit effort by our pitcher (Ally Mende) against new
found rival Riverdell, a game they won 3-0. The lady Rams left their mark on the counties by outscoring their
opponents 13–4 and advancing further than in years past.
By the time the North 1 Group 2 state seeding came around the Ramsey Softball team had clinched the #2
overall seed in the tournament with a 17–3 record, a position the girls would take full advantage of. The girls
would have the luxury of playing at Tisdale field throughout the playoffs until the championship game. The
Lady Rams played solid softball and displayed their versatility in both the field and at the plate. Led by
captains Danielle Cirilli and Jenn Ball, the girls ripped off three straight playoff wins at home, playing
outstanding defense and outscoring the competition by a total of 24–0! Capping the winning streak at home
was an impressive 10–0 mercy of Riverdell in 5 innings. The R.D. game truly defined the season for the girls as
they avenged an earlier loss and advanced them to the championship game. The girls fell short in the finals but
it wasn‟t from a lack of effort and caring as they showed true grit and emotion till the last at bat.
The 2011 Lady Rams played as a team all year long. They consistently showed off their versatility and kept
proving all season that they were a group made up of many talented players. This was seen in their individual
statistics as every girl in the starting lineup batted over .300. Lexi Knief, Morgan Bishop, Nicole Gravlis, Ally
Mende, and Jenn Ball all found themselves somewhere in the top 5 of the offense categories. In total, seven
players including Arielle Schulmann and Rhianna Maglio accumulated 30+ hits. Collectively, the team boasted
a .382 average and scored over 185 runs on the year! The girls were just as impressive on defense as they put
together a fielding percentage over .900 as a unit. The pitching duties were dispersed among three girls (Ally
Mende, Morgan Bishop, and Nikki Fortunato) who as a group combined for 21 wins and an ERA of 1.71.
All of the success in 2011 can be attributed to the solid play of the girls as they all supported each other both on
and off the field. Sarah Blauman, Amanda Triglia, Melissa Gwon, Re Kleinbard, and Kayla Gravalis should be
mentioned and noted for their contributions to a deeply talented team. We would especially like to thank the 5
seniors (Captains Danielle Cirilli and Jenn Ball, Amanda Triglia, Sarah Blauman, and Nikki Fortunato) for their
dedication and hard work for not only this past season, but the four years they put into the program.
The Lady Rams JV softball team had a meritorious season finishing 13 and 4. Fortunately for this team, merit
did not solely revolve around its record. This year, the Lady Rams JV team scored 164 to runs to the 66

accumulated by their opponents. Our three pitchers (Liz Morano, Caity McHale and Jess Juhlin) combined for a
total of 90 strikeouts. Our three person pitching staff contributed to our team‟s success since each pitcher
brought different speeds, pitches and presentations to the mound. Batters were often caught off guard and called
looking at the third strike for many of the 90 strikeouts.
When the ball was hit into the playing field, the girls were intrepid in their attempts to make plays. The outfield
routinely demonstrated their physical prowess by making deep catches on the run and doubling up runners at
second base and at home plate. The efforts the outfielders (Kate Branna, Melanie Consiglio and Meagan Cirillo)
put in during practice paid off in game situations when their throws to bases or cut-offs were all accurate. The
infield also yoked together to end seemingly propitious innings for their opponents by ending innings with
double plays, successful pick off plays and perfectly executed situational plays. Nicole Mazzella, Liz Morano,
Caity McHale, Megan Bencivenga, Alexa Cirillo and Christina Esposito all contributed to this confluence of
plays in which our team ran off the field reveling in success.
The Lady Rams had reason to emote jubilation at the plate as well. They hit for a team batting average of 0.338
and had a 0.352 team on base percentage. The girls buffeted the ball to bat through the lineup in one inning in 7
games. As a team they collected a profuse amount of hits, 170, with 34 of them going for extra bases. Nicole
Mazzella, Kate Branna and Alexa Cirillo each struck out less than 5 times all season! All of the players deserve
much approbation for their positive energy and dedication to the program. Thank you girls for making this
another enjoyable spring season!
Frosh Softball – Coach Julie Rutligano
The 2011 freshman softball team was a fun and successful group. They finished with a record of 6-4 and
placing 3 rd in the Freshman Bergenfield Tournament. Our pitcher, Jess Juhlin, played a key role on our team.
She consistently worked hard to improve her skills and dominate on the mound. Jess had several great games
including one against Bergenfield where she had 11 strike-outs. Catcher, Nicole Mazzella, also played a key
role in the success of our team. She batted fourth with 5 homeruns and several extra base hits. Our infield
consisted of Kelsey McOwen, Alexa Colon, Leslye Ortega, Maddie McCormack and Kelly Mahoney. Together
these girls worked to perfect our plays and execute them well. Our infield was the source of many outs which
contributed to our success. Our outfield was led by leadoff hitter Brianna Popolo who began switch hitting late
in the season and continues to work on becoming a slapper. The Outfielders who also supplied the Rams with
several great catches are Caroline Martin, Sarah Sartori and Jess Checke. Together these girls split time
between left and right field where they had success and improved their skills. This team worked well together
and is sure to contribute to the continued success of Ramsey Softball.
Boys & Girl’s Track – Head Coach Matt Wynne
It was another successful season for Ramsey Track and Field, as the boys and girls endured a difficult and
challenging preseason to accomplish their goals. The Boys team won the Pawloski Relays, the Bergen County
Relays, and the League Championship with an undefeated record of 6-0. Contributing members to those
championships were: Seniors Chris Bailey, Byron Blake, Joe Calabria, Andrew Clinton, Cory Connell, John
Dugan, Joey Farrell, Mike Ferrante, and Joe McNally; Juniors Andrew Assile, Erik Buser, Jared Donnarumma,
Chris Eltringham, Brandon Hasslinger, Teddy Linde, Billy Pekarsky, Brian Psota, and Mark Skinner; and

Sophomores Dejan Adair, Alex Albanese, Ryan DiRisio, Dan Dugan, Jack Deluca, Eric Erli, Nik Haas, Matt
Johns, Zach Kopec, David Pillepich, and Victor Sifunjo.
The Boys finished second at the State Championship meet with outstanding performances by several members
of the team. Cory Connell was the State Champion in the discus and Chris Eltringham was the State Champion
in the 800. Other big performances were turned in by Andrew Assile, Joe McNally, Alex Albanese, John
Dugan, Erik Buser, Brian Psota, Dejan Adair, and Billy Pekarsky.
The girls had many relay and individual successes this season. Key athletes were: Seniors Lisa Anderson,
Valerie Bedrock, Jean Marie Burdi, Nina Gordy, Katie Hall, Sarah Hudson, Daniella Salemo, and Kaitlin
Stober; Juniors Laura Dosch, Lauren Monteith, and Gabi Malvasi; Sophomores Julia Bogaenko, Emily
Calabria, Jacqueline Clinton, Taryn Corrigan, Ally Cowie, Jenna Gravalis, Kaitlyn Johnston, Erin O‟Connor,
Nautica Rowan, Sierra Sands, and Katie Vernon, and Freshmen Alana Karpovich, Victoria Pesco, Kelly Redl,
and Kristen Webb.
The girls won the Sophomore County Championships, the County Seat Frosh/Soph Championship and the
Triboro Relays Sophomore Championship. The girls 4x400 of Hudson, Redl, Gravalis, and Vernon finished 6 th
in the County Championship and qualified for the State Group Championships. Vernon placed in the league,
county, and state championship meets in the 400 meter. Kaitlyn Johnston placed in the league, county, and state
championships in the 3200.
I want to congratulate everyone on their many successes this season. Ramsey track wishes all of the Seniors
well as they go off into the world, and all of the coaches are very excited for the underclassmen coming back
next year. Thanks for making this a special year over all.
Boy’s Tennis – Head Coach Kelly Hasslinger
This year‟s Varsity Tennis team had one of the most successful seasons of all time, ending with a record of 15
wins, 4 losses. As a major contender in the Big North Division, the team placed 2 nd in the league with a record
of 9 – 3 behind new rival Tenafly. The boys had big wins against Bergenfield and Indian Hills which gave
them the 2 nd place trophy. They were ranked 4 th out of 16 teams in the State Sectional Tournament and won the
first 2 rounds in shut-outs 5-0 against Kinnelon and Dwight Englewood. They played in the semi-finals for the
first time in many years and came very close to beating the #1 seed Pascack Hills. It was a great season and the
players should be very proud of their success. Their confidence grew as they continued to win throughout the
season, playing schools our size was a positive impact.
Playing at 1 st Singles for 2 years in a row was Basil Elamir, Co-Captain of the team. Basil had a great season
playing the most competitive position with an overall record of 15 – 6 and a league record of 8 – 4. He lost in
the quarter-finals of the County Tournament to the #1 seed and qualified for the State Tournament in early June.
Basil earned the award of 1 st Team All League in 1 st singles and he is a 3 year varsity player. The team will
miss his leadership and sarcasm. He was a great asset to the team and we wish him luck next year at Eckerd
College in Florida.
Earning the “Coaches Award” this year is Co-Captain Charlie Berk who played 2 nd singles for the third year in
a row. Charlie ended his season with an overall record of 16 – 6. He earned 2 nd Team All League at 2 nd singles
with a league record of 8 – 3. He biggest win was against Tenafly early in the season which motivated him to
continue his winning streak. He advanced to the semi-finals of the County Tournament, losing to the #1 seed
from Pascack Hills. Charlie‟s 3 years as a varsity player gave him the confidence to achieve his goals for the
season. Charlie is the youngest in the family and we will miss the Berk‟s in RHS tennis. We wish him all the
best as his future plans include University of Miami next year.
The First Doubles team consisted of seniors Alex Moncato and Shiv Shan who earned Honorable Mention All
League at their position. Alex Moncato is a 2 year varsity player and is a great doubles player, especially with
his quick reflexes at the net.. His partner was Shiv Shan who was more comfortable at the baseline and they
worked very well together as a team. Alex ended his year with an overall record of 14 – 7 and a league record
of 7 – 5. He had an important win for the team at 3 rd singles against River Dell this year. We will miss him
next year, his plans are to attend the University of Massachusetts. Shiv Shan is also a second year varsity player
and his overall record was 11 – 7 with a league record of 6 – 5. When Shiv was “on” there was no stopping
them, they were a force to be reckoned with. Their biggest win was against Pascack Hills in the State
Tournament semi-finals, coming from behind and winning 6 games in a row to clinch the win. Shiv will be
attending Rochester University in the fall. It was great having the 2 seniors play together at 1 st doubles, their
energy and enthusiasm will certainly be missed by the team next year.

Junior player Steve Kurnentz is this year‟s Most Valuable Player having the best record on the team with 19
wins and 2 losses. Steve earned 2 nd Team All League at third singles with a league record of 13 – 1 – 1. Steve
began playing tennis in his freshman year of high school and his hard work and determination led him to a
successful season. Steve‟s biggest win was in the semi-finals of the State Tournament where he beat his
opponent from Pascack Hills in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. He also advanced to the semi-finals of the County
Tournament and had a great season overall. I am looking forward to having Steve back for his senior year to fill
in the top position.
Wrapping up the Varsity squad at 2 nd Doubles were juniors Jake Taeschler and Tommy Rella, both first year
varsity players. They earned the award of 2 nd Team All League in their position with a league record of 6 – 6
and an overall record of 11 – 8. Both players were an asset to the team and will be a big part of the success we
plan to have next year. JV players Peter Lynch and Yoon Kim also contributed to the teams‟ success by playing
a few varsity matches when needed. We look forward to their return next year as well.
Many congratulations to the boys on their outstanding season this year. They worked hard both off season and
in season which contributed to their success. We had many laughs along the way and the bond they formed as a
team this year was awesome. Thank you to all the parents, family and friends who cheered us on and gave us
your love and support. We will miss the home-made chocolate chip cookies from Mrs. Berk and the munchkins
from Mrs. Elamir for sure! This year‟s team has so much to be proud of and it was truly a joy and honor to be
their coach. I am looking forward to a great season next year and wish all the best to the graduating seniors.
J.V. Boys Tennis - Coach Carol Carlson
What a great tennis season we had this year! Once again, it flew by. The weather cooperated. We were able to
get out on the courts quickly and complete our challenge matches.
We had a tremendous season, our record was 10 wins and 4 losses.
Pat Forsyth was our consistent first singles player. It‟s a tough place to play and he did a great job. John
Landzert – second singles – the most steady player on the team. First doubles was played by Youn Kim and
Peter Lynch. Guys, you kept me entertained during matches. Second doubles was a rotated position, but played
mostly by Kevin Scrozynski and Gabe Shvachkin (we had to pair those two last names). It‟s too bad the season
ended, you two were developing into a great doubles team.
Peter Falkow, Matt Gampel, Steve Paik, Anthony Salemo, Shu Umura, and Sean Wissell, didn‟t get enough
playing time, but were always willing and able when they did play. Thanks! Great job! You have great
potential. I‟d love to see you develop it.

As the season progressed, I saw tremendous improvement in your skills and match playing. That was certainly
a result of your enthusiasm, hard work, and willingness to take suggestions and be coached.
Thanks for a great season! I hope you will continue to work at improving your game. You need to play tennis
this summer as well as throughout the year so you will be ready to come back and achieve those goals you
should be setting for yourselves.
You are a great group of guys! I thoroughly enjoyed working with you! Stay in shape, practice, and I will see
you next year. Good luck to you in trying to make varsity or helping to improve our record.
Boy’s & Girl’s Golf – Co- Head Coaches - Keith Nixon & Ken Schmarge
Girls Golf
The 2011 Girls Golf Team had another outstanding season finishing with a 16-3 record once again setting a
record for wins for the seventh year in a row. This season marked the beginning of the Big North Girls Golf
League with fifteen teams playing in three divisions. Our girls competed in Division 3 with Fort Lee, Cliffside
Park, Pascack Valley and Westwood. We ran the table with a perfect 8-0 record and won our first ever girls
division championship.
In addition to the division matches the girls competed against the majority of the Big North teams. We had
matches with I.H.A., Holy Angels, Bergen Tech., Ramapo, Tenafly, No. Highlands and Paramus. The girls also
had the opportunity to play a variety of courses including Ramsey, Ridgewood, Packanack Lake, Rivervale,
Paramus, Valley Brook, Darlington, Overpeck, Arcola, Rockleigh and Stanton Ridge.
With girls golf in North Jersey growing at a rapid pace there are more opportunities for the girls to compete and
showcase their skills. Once again the Bergen County Women‟s Coaches Association Tournament was a big
success. The 18 hole event was played at Rockleigh and we finished in 5 th place with a score of 463, Stephanie
Incardona led our team with a 110. Alex Kopec and Alli Holmes posted a 48 in the 9 hole scramble event. One
of the new events this year was the Girls Arcola Invitational at Arcola C.C. The teams played a nine hole
modified Pinehurst format with each school consisting of three two player teams. Ridgewood won the event and
we finished tied for second with I.H.A. The other new event on the schedule was the first ever Big North
Tournament which was played at Rivervale. Despite the fact that it rained throughout the entire round we fared
quite well finishing in 4 th place with a score of 454. Julie Botz led the Rams with a score of 109. Once again our
girls qualified to play in the State Sectional Tournament at Stanton Ridge. Again the weather conditions were
extremely difficult with rain throughout the round. Although we finished last in the nine team field with a score
of 453 the girls had an opportunity to compete with some of the best teams in the state and gain valuable
experience. Stephanie Incardona led the team with a 106.
The team consisted of eight players this year. Izzy Beers was the lone freshman and played in 6 matches and 1
tournament with an average of 59, her low round was a 57 at Overpeck. Sophomore Nicole Cirilli was
consistent throughout the season and played in 12 matches and 3 tournaments with a low round of 49 at
Packanack Lake. Nicole finished the season with a 54 average and was ranked 24 th in the county. Junior Alli
Holmes played varsity golf for the first time this year and had a 65 average in four matches. Junior Hailee
Valtin improved in her second year of varsity golf and played in 11 matches and 3 tournaments with an average
of 58. Hailee‟s low round was a 53 at Ramsey. Three year letter winner Julie Botz played in 9 matches and 3
tournaments with a low round of 51 at Valley Brook. Julie finished the season with a 56 average and is the 30 th
ranked player in Bergen County. In her fourth year of varsity golf Alex Kopec played in 7 matches with a low
round of 56 at Darlington and a 59 average. Senior Kayla O‟Neill improved tremendously this year playing in
10 matches and 2 tournaments. Kayla had a 50 at Darlington which led us to victory over Bergen Tech. Kayla
finished the season with a 58 average. Stephanie Incardona had an outstanding senior year and finished the

season ranked 18 th out of 83 girls in Bergen County. Stephanie played in 10 matches and three tournaments. She
had 6 rounds in the 40‟s with a low of 47 at Paramus and an average of 50.
Boys Golf
The Ramsey Boys Golf team followed up a stellar 2010 campaign with a very nice 2011 season. Though we
missed our goal of returning to the State Tournament of Champions by just one stroke, the team played well
throughout the year, peaking at the end of the season. While it was disappointing to miss qualifying as a team,
there were many team and individual performances of which the players should be proud. This year‟s team
featured five seniors who have been in the program at least 3 years, so it was a rewarding culmination to years
of work.
The Rams‟ competed in over twenty 9-hole dual matches, and four 18-hole tournaments. The format of the 9-
hole matches is “stroke play”, in which 6 players compete, and the best 4 scores count – the lowest scoring team
wins. Playing in the Big North‟s Division 6, one of the most competitive divisions in all of New Jersey,
Ramsey put together a respectable record of 12-8-1. The golf played in our division was top notch – our losses
were to phenomenal teams, and the scores were almost always close. In fact, the level of competition was so
high, it took a day-of-the-cut-off win just to qualify for the state tournament.
Our first 18-hole event was at the prestigious Garden State Cup, played at Blue Heron Pines. There, over
twenty of the top teams in the state competed with 5 players, count 4, in this early-April event over spring
break. Mat Goldman‟s 85 led the way for the Rams‟, though we did not fare very well in the overall team
standings. Still, it was an admirable effort after a cold, rainy, and sometimes snowy pre-season.
The Rams‟ next competed in the first ever Big North Tournament at Valley Brook Golf Course. Anthony
Schifano led the team with a 77, helping Ramsey finish third in the division, just behind Tenafly and River Dell,
and 9 th in the entire 27-team field which included almost all of the top teams in Bergen County.
Next on the docket was a chance for the Rams to defend their 2009 and 2010 State Championship, and they
unfortunately were unable to so. Wet conditions made the course play very long, and a few bad holes left the
Rams one stroke out of a play-off for second place. Mat Goldman finished in second place on the individual
leader board with a superb 72 to make him our lone qualifier for the State Tournament of Champions.
At the Bergen County Odell Nasser/Dan Luciano Championship at Darlington Golf Course, Ramsey finished a
respectable fifth place among the groups 1 and 2 schools. Kyle Landau‟s 78 was a team best that day and a top-
10 score among the individuals. We avenged some early season losses to division rivals this day, which is a
testament to the boys‟ steady improvement throughout the season.

The final match of the season was the Arcola Cup, where Ramsey finished second, losing only to state power
Bergen Catholic. The nine-hole format matches up two players per school for a total of three, two–man teams.
Each team posts a single nine-hole score using the “Pinehurst” system, which is a hybrid of the scramble and
the alternate-shot formats. The second place finish at a great golf course against top competition was a great
way to end the year.
The strength of Ramsey Golf was their experience. With 5 seniors, 4 of whom have been earning varsity letters
since sophomore year, we featured a core of players who had done it all already, so nothing external could
throw them off. In all, seven boys earned varsity letters: sophomore Nick Schifano, junior Cameron Walker,
and seniors Chase Crawford, Mat Goldman, Anthony Schifano, Ryan Landau, and Kyle Landau. All the
players maintained steady 9-hole averages in the 40‟s (Goldman an impressive 37.7), and most had days where
they shot 40 or better for 9 holes. Mat Goldman was the Rams‟ Most Valuable Golfer.
Cameron Walker played several varsity matches for us this year, with his score counting in a tight match against
Westwood which we won by a mere 3 strokes. With one year left for Cameron at RHS, he will bring valuable
experience to the table next season as our only returning senior.
Senior Chase Crawford and sophomore Nick Schifano played a lot of rounds together over the course of the
season, and their compatibility became more and more evident. Chase and Nick form an obvious match for a
variety of reasons. First, they share the unofficial “best dressed” award. Chase, known for his Loud Mouth
pants, and Nick for his pink shirts, argyle socks (with shorts), and multi-colored pants, they turn heads on the
course! Both players also show a lot of spirit on the course. Never afraid to celebrate with a fist pump or a
high-five, their charisma was always a boost to the team. Their 39 at the Arcola Invitational is a testament to
their compatibility as golfers and teammates. Individually, Chase‟s 39 punctuated a decisive victory over
Paramus Catholic, and Nick‟s 82 at the Big North helped the Rams‟ earn a top-10 in the overall standings. Both
players were named Honorable Mention in the Big North Division 6.
Senior Ryan Landau, along with Mat Goldman, was a four-year player for RHS. Ryan stepped up to be our 4 th
man, scoring in most matches and carding an impressive 79 at the Big North Tournament. Ryan was a tough
competitor who did not back down against any opponent. Ryan was a player the coaches could talk to, to check
the pulse of the team. His quiet leadership will be missed next year. Ryan earned a spot on the 2 nd team in
Division 6 of the Big North.
Kyle Landau, one of three returning members of last year‟s State Tournament of Champions foursome, had an
outstanding year. Kyle shot several 9-hole rounds in the 30‟s and 18-hole scores in the 70‟s and 80‟s. Kyle‟s
41 at Knickerbocker in the pouring rain led the team to victory over Bergenfield and his 38 against Pascack
Valley on a brand new golf course was crucial in that must-win match. Kyle also teamed up with Mat to fire a
37 at the Arcola Invitational. Nicknamed “Ricky” this year, Kyle earned a spot on the 2 nd team in Division 6 of
the Big North. In almost any other division, he‟d have been first team, but the strong division bumped him to
second team.
Anthony Schifano played at the State Tournament of Champions the past two years. Anthony came into the
season with a lot of experience, and it showed on the course. His 77 at the Big North led Ramsey and he had
several 9-hole rounds in the 30‟s and 40‟s. Though Anthony will be missed out on the course next season, he
will join RHS alum Keith Prokop at Dominican College where he has accepted a scholarship to play on their
golf team. Like Kyle, Anthony would have been a first team all-league player in most divisions of the Big
North, but had to settled on 2 nd team due to the strength of the teams in our division.

Mat Goldman had the finest season of a Ramsey golfer in the past several years, earning 2 nd team all-county
honors and 1 st team all Big North Division 6. Most of Mat‟s 9-hole scores were in the 30‟s, including a blazing,
2-under par round of 33 at Ramsey Country Club against Dwight Morrow. For the third consecutive year, Mat
shot the team‟s best score at the State Sectional Tournament, posting an even-par 72 at Rockleigh in less than
perfect conditions, good enough for second place, earning himself a trip to the State Tournament of Champions.
Mat is a 4-year varsity letter winner, and even though he was a good player when he entered high school, he has
matured into a top-level amateur golfer, which is a tribute to his hard work in and out of season. Mat has been
in contact with the golf coach at the University of Rhode Island and plans on walking on to their division 1
program.
While the coaches are sad to see the senior members of this team go, we look fondly back over their years on
the squad. There have been so many memories, both on and off the golf course, which will be with the players
and coaches for a lifetime. This was a special bunch that enjoyed their share of successes, struggled together
through some tough times, but emerged in the end having a lot to be proud of.
Junior Varsity Golf 2011
Being a member of the Junior Varsity Golf team at most schools is not too difficult – many teams are lucky to
find 6 varsity players who have touched a club before. At Ramsey, on the other hand, being on the J.V. Golf
Team means you are a player! All members survived a difficult try-out process, beating out many prospective
players who are pretty good, can break 50 for 9 holes, and would be in the top 4 of 90% of Bergen County high
school varsity golf teams. Our Junior Varsity players had a very nice season, shooting solid rounds whenever
and wherever given the opportunity.
The team consisted of eight freshmen this year: Jack Edwards, Connor Johnson, Zach Jones, Jack Kasprzak,
Danny Monteith, Joey Padovano, Tom Sebastiano, and Christian Valtin. Playing matches and tournaments at
Ramsey Country Club, Apple Ridge, Rockleigh, and Overpeck as well other courses, the players put up nice
numbers and showed solid improvement over the course of the season. With work over the summer, the
players can move themselves to the next level, as there are many openings on varsity for next year.
