Besides globally endangered white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala);; the site supports<br />

crowded groups <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> comm<strong>on</strong> pochard (Aythya ferina), European wige<strong>on</strong> (Anas penelope),<br />

comm<strong>on</strong> shelduck (Tadorna tadorna), Eurasian coot (Fulica atra). Another important<br />

species wintering in the site is flamingo (Phe<strong>on</strong>icopterus roseus).<br />

The lago<strong>on</strong> is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the important breeding sites for globally endangered marbled duck<br />

(Marmar<strong>on</strong>etta angustrirostris) as well as rarely seen purple swamphen (Porphyrio<br />

porphyrio) and black francolin (Francolinus francolinus).<br />

Mammals<br />

With its natural formati<strong>on</strong>s and artificial habitats created by human interventi<strong>on</strong>, Akyatan<br />

Lago<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>stitutes appropriate habitats for many mammal species. Wild boar (Sus<br />

scr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>a), jackal (Canis aureus), jungle cat (Felis chaus), Egyptian m<strong>on</strong>goose (Herpestes<br />

ichneum<strong>on</strong>), European hare (Lepus europaeus), and fox (Vulpes vulpes) are the primary<br />

mammals the site supports. In additi<strong>on</strong> to these mammals red deer (Cervus elaphus),<br />

Indian crested porcupine (Hystrix indica), southern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus<br />

c<strong>on</strong>color Meri<strong>on</strong>es tristrami), brown rat<br />

(Rattus norvegicus), black rat (Rattus rattus), Maced<strong>on</strong>ian mouse (Mus maced<strong>on</strong>icus),<br />

Middle East blind mole rat (Nannospalax ehrenbergi) and lesser white-toothed shrew<br />

(Crocidura suaveolens) are relatively rare mammals, the site also supports. There are<br />

records <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fallow deer (Dama dama), Gazella (Gazella sp.) and Hyaena (Hyaena hyaena)<br />

to have been supported in the site in the past.<br />

CULTURAL AND SOCIAL ASPECTS<br />

Archeology<br />

The very first settlements in the immediate envir<strong>on</strong>ment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Akyatan Lago<strong>on</strong> date back to<br />

late Neolithic Age (800-5500, BC). Antique city <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <br />

Town located in the east <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the lago<strong>on</strong>. The city <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Magarsos, the first seaport city <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

by city walls in its north, reserves a castle, theatre, Temple <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Athena, church, bath,<br />

tomb and remnants <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a cistern. Collapsed in the Middle Age, the castle was restored by<br />

<br />

scale. The Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuqs and Ottomans dominated the<br />

area, which was under Hittite sovereignty in the 17 th century B.C., until the proclamati<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Turkish Republic.<br />
