One <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the most remarkable water products is crayfish. 311 t<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> crayfish was<br />

harvested in 1986, whereas the fungus disease in 1986 resulted in a decrease to 8 t<strong>on</strong>s<br />

in 1987. This amount increased in time and went up to 40 t<strong>on</strong>s in 1999. Local fishers also<br />

c<strong>on</strong>firm the effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the disease have started to fade and the amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> crayfish<br />

harvest has increased recently.<br />

Recreati<strong>on</strong><br />

Lake Uluabat c<strong>on</strong>tains two natural and cultural heritage elements significant for<br />

recreati<strong>on</strong> within. Forming an interacti<strong>on</strong>, these two draw many foreign and domestic<br />

tourists to the regi<strong>on</strong>. It is possible to watch numerous bird species breeding, wintering,<br />

staging in large numbers. Many tourists visit the site to birdwatch.<br />

<br />

Municipality and Bosch Industry and Trade Co. is located close to the site. There is a<br />

watch tower in the yard <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the centre in th<br />

<br />

<br />

surrounding villages. N<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> these historical assets are under restorati<strong>on</strong> or<br />

<br />

organized annually since 2005 aiming at protecting storks and other migratory birds<br />

visiting the village and sharing the works carried out so far with the public.<br />

WETLAND MANAGEMENT PLAN<br />

Management plan works has started in coordinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ministry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Envir<strong>on</strong>ment and<br />

Forestry and with c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s by Wildlife Protecti<strong>on</strong> Society (DHKD) in 1998. In<br />

meetings with attendance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> central and local administrati<strong>on</strong>s, universities, NGOs,<br />

uni<strong>on</strong>s, fishers, industrialists, farmers, hunters and representatives <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> other groups <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

interest the Lake Uluabat Wetland Management Plan was c<strong>on</strong>cluded in 2002 and enforced<br />

with approval <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Commissi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Wetlands</strong>.<br />

In terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> participati<strong>on</strong> the Lake Uluabat Management Plan could manage the highest<br />

attendance as a protected z<strong>on</strong>e in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Turkey</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Moreover, for Lake Uluabat for the first time in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Turkey</str<strong>on</strong>g> a management plan decree was<br />

prepared and implemented.<br />

The management plan was implemented in coordinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uluabat Executi<strong>on</strong> Committee<br />

with c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Wildlife C<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> Fund between 2002 and 2007. The plan<br />

was revised in 2007 and a 2007-2011 Plan was put into force.<br />
