Archeology<br />

Past and Present Land Use<br />

Human settlements in Lake Uluabat have c<strong>on</strong>tinued since ancient times (100 BC). The<br />

routes between antique cities in those ages. Then freight shipment was carried out <strong>on</strong><br />

the Sea Marmara, Uluabat Stream, Lake Uluabat and Bursa route. For thousands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

years, the area had also been an important centre for silkworm breeding and silk trade<br />

due to its locati<strong>on</strong>. Silkworm breeding has come to cease following synthetic threads has<br />

become widespread as <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1960.<br />

Today farmers engaged in agricultural activities, fishers and workers employed in the<br />

industrial establishments in the area as well as the tradespeople providing services for<br />

those establishments and meeting local needs compose the social structure <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the area.<br />

There are industrial facilities based <strong>on</strong> agricultural activities and water products,<br />

providing employment and producti<strong>on</strong> in significant ratios. Widely produced in the regi<strong>on</strong>,<br />

tomatoes are transformed to tomato paste as well as other vegetables and fruits to<br />

frozen or processed food. Dairy products are also processed in these facilities.<br />

NATURAL RESOURCE USE<br />

Agriculture<br />

There is intensive agricultural activities in the envir<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lake Uluabat except for the<br />

southeastern porti<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sisted <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> elevated slopes and forest areas. The agricultural<br />

activities in the immediates <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the lake and <strong>on</strong> the islands vary with respect to the source<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the water used for irrigati<strong>on</strong>, crop range and agricultural engagements <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> households.<br />

Tomato, <strong>on</strong>i<strong>on</strong>, potato, sugar beet, corn, eggplant, bean, sesame, sunflower, wheat and<br />

barley are the leading products. Olive cultivati<strong>on</strong> and orcharding also have a significant<br />

place in the area. Water is pumped out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the lake and used for irrigating the agriculture<br />

lands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 6350ha.<br />

Livestock<br />

Livestock producti<strong>on</strong> today is losing its significance, whereas it was a more widespread<br />

and remarkable business in the past. Breeding in a few facilities and cattle raising for<br />
