The greenhouse area in the Kizilirmak Delta is 60 decares. There are two seas<strong>on</strong>al<br />

products, <strong>on</strong>e in winter seas<strong>on</strong> and <strong>on</strong>e in summer seas<strong>on</strong>, in the greenhouses which<br />

have an average size <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 480 meter square. Main products are cucumber, tomato,<br />

eggplant and lettuce.<br />

Livestock<br />

Livestock is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the main income source for the local people. Main livestock<br />

villages in Kizilirmak Delta are the <strong>on</strong>es located nearby the wetland. Although the main<br />

livestock is cattle and sheep, it is also possible to see wild horses (jade) and camels in<br />

the Delta.<br />

Moreover, the biggest water buffalo populati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Turkey</str<strong>on</strong>g> is in Kizilirmak Delta.<br />

However, water buffalo husbandry decreases sharply due to shifting to agricultural<br />

activities.<br />

In fact water buffalo is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the important elements for pasture vegetati<strong>on</strong>, lake<br />

presence is important due to c<strong>on</strong>trolling the dispersi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> many wetland plants,<br />

recreating <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the reed beds and making protected areas for bird nests.<br />

Main income sources provided by Kizilirmak Delta: Fisheries, reed cutting<br />

and disrooting rushes<br />

Fisheries is an important income source in Kizilirmak Delta where has suitable<br />

habitats for fishes and other aquacultures.<br />

There are 4 aquaculture cooperatives in the regi<strong>on</strong>. These are Yorukler<br />

Doganca and Emenli Aquaculture Cooperatives.<br />

Sturge<strong>on</strong>s (Acipenser sp.), wels catfish (Siluris glanis), comm<strong>on</strong> carp (Cyprinus<br />

carpio) and comm<strong>on</strong> rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) are some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the fish species<br />

found in Kizilirmak Delta.<br />

Another water resource in the Kizilirmak Delta is the lakes. The lakes with 2,440<br />

ha at dry seas<strong>on</strong>s and 9,250 ha at wet seas<strong>on</strong>s are the important lago<strong>on</strong> lakes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Turkey</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Comm<strong>on</strong> carp (Cyprinus carpio), zander (Stizostedi<strong>on</strong> lucioperca), striped mullet (Mugil<br />

cephalus) and crawfish hunting are undertaken in the lakes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Balik, Uzun, Gici, Tatli,<br />

Alintili, Parali, Cernek, Liman, Tuzlu, Suluklu, Karabogaz and Mulk.<br />

Reed Harvesting<br />

Reed harvesting is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the most important ec<strong>on</strong>omical activities in the Delta.<br />

Comm<strong>on</strong> reed (Phragmites australis), lesser bulrush (Typha angustifolia) and comm<strong>on</strong><br />

club-rush (Scirpus lacustris) have been harvested and marketed.<br />

Reed harvesting is an income source for nearly 130 households in Doganca,<br />

has been exported to be used as ro<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

insulati<strong>on</strong> material.<br />
