Amphibians and Reptiles<br />
The lake and its immediates are rich habitat in terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> amphibians and reptiles. In<br />
terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> amphibians, the site supports four salamander species (Salamandra<br />
salamandra, Triturus vittatus, Triturus vulgaris, Triturus crisiatus) and six frog species<br />
(Hyla arborea, Bufo viridis, Bufo bufo, Pelobates syriacus, Rana ridibunda, Rana<br />
macr<strong>on</strong>elis). In terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> reptiles,the site supports four snake species (Coluber caspius,<br />
Natrix natrix, Natrix tessellata, Ophisarus apodus), two lizard species (Ablepharus<br />
kitaibeli, Lacerta sp.) and two turtle species (Emys orbicular, Testudo graeca).<br />
Birds<br />
<br />
shelter in all seas<strong>on</strong>s;; the appropriate habitats providing various species with feeding,<br />
staging and brooding safely;; rich food chain such as insects, worms, frogs and fish. As a<br />
result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> observati<strong>on</strong>s so far, 266 bird species are recorded in the site. Am<strong>on</strong>g these<br />
species 66 regularly and 22 occasi<strong>on</strong>ally use the site for brooding.<br />
Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) and pygmy cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus),<br />
species listed in threatened species in all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Europe breed in the site in high numbers.<br />
Black-crowned night her<strong>on</strong> (Nycticorax nycticorax), squacco her<strong>on</strong> (Ardeola ralloides)<br />
and Eurasian spo<strong>on</strong>bill (Platalea leucorodia) also breed in the site. Comm<strong>on</strong> tern (Sterna<br />
hirundo) is another remarkable bird species am<strong>on</strong>g birds breeding in other parts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />
lake.<br />
Great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), little egret (Egretta garzetta), grey her<strong>on</strong> (Ardea<br />
cinerea) and glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus <br />
col<strong>on</strong>ies. Eurasian coot (Fulica atra), garganey (Anas querquedula), great reed warbler<br />
(Acrocephalus arundinaceus), red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio) and black-headed<br />
bunting (Emberizza melanocephala) are other bird species breeding in remarkable<br />
<br />
Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) and white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala)<br />
winter in the lake regularly. Great white pelicans use the lake as a stopover during<br />
migrati<strong>on</strong>. Though almost 60.000 waterbirds were recorded in winter census at the end<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1960s;; 13.087 waterbirds in 2005 and 19.728 in 2010 were counted in the lake.<br />

Mammals<br />
The lake and its immediate support southern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus<br />
c<strong>on</strong>color), European mole (Talpa europaea), European snow vole (Microtus nivalis), l<strong>on</strong>gfingered<br />
bat (Myotis capaccinii) and red fox (Vulpes vulpes). Local people had reportedly<br />
seen European otter (Lutra lutra) in the immediates <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the former fishing port in Bereketli<br />
Village.<br />
