<strong>Wetlands</strong>: Habitats <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Great Importance<br />

<strong>Wetlands</strong>, c<strong>on</strong>sidered the worlds natural wealth museums due to the biological<br />

variety they host, are the most important ecosystems in the world with their natural<br />

<br />

- By fostering or evacuating subterrenean waters, balance groundwater. By<br />

storing flood waters, leveling floods, inhibiting seawater from getting in shore,<br />

<br />

- Raise the level <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> humidity around them and have a positive effect in the local<br />

climate elements, especially precipitati<strong>on</strong> and temperature<br />

- Clean water by blocking residue and toxic material or by utilizing sustenance<br />

(such as nitrogen, phosphorus)<br />

- Al<strong>on</strong>g with tropical forests, are the most biologically productive ecosystems <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the world.<br />

- Provide a habitat for rich flora and fauna with ecological and high commercial<br />

value, especially fish and aquatic birds.<br />

- Possess high ec<strong>on</strong>omic value. Fishery, agriculture and livestock farming, reed<br />

producti<strong>on</strong>, tourism and transportati<strong>on</strong> oppurtunities add to regi<strong>on</strong>al and<br />

nati<strong>on</strong>al ec<strong>on</strong>omy.<br />

According to The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Ramsar</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>, 135 internati<strong>on</strong>ally important wetlands have<br />

been determined in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Turkey</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Many <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> these have internati<strong>on</strong>al importance due to the<br />

aquatic birds and fish species they inhabit. The necessary criteria to become a <str<strong>on</strong>g>Ramsar</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Site and existing <str<strong>on</strong>g>Ramsar</str<strong>on</strong>g> sites are listed below.<br />
