Criteria 1<br />
A rare wetland in its<br />
biogeographic regi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Lake Kuyucuk is situated in a<br />
transiti<strong>on</strong> z<strong>on</strong>e between Caucasian<br />
and Irano-Anatolian hotspots. It is<br />
<strong>on</strong> the African-Eurasian migrati<strong>on</strong><br />
route that milli<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> birds migrate<br />
through in Falls and Springs.<br />
Criteria 2 20 threatened or near<br />
threatened species out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 27 in<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Turkey</str<strong>on</strong>g> can be observed in Lake<br />
Kuyucuk. The site also supports<br />
7 threatened and 9 near<br />
threatened bird species.<br />
Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus<br />
crispus), red-breasted goose<br />
(Branta ruficolis), ferruginous duck<br />
(Aythya nyroca), white-headed<br />
duck (Oxyura leucocephala), red<br />
kite (Milvus milvus), Egyptian<br />
vulture (Neophr<strong>on</strong> percnopterus),<br />
cinereous vulture (Aegypius<br />
m<strong>on</strong>achus), pallid harrier (Circus<br />
macrourus), imperial eagle (Aquila<br />
heliaca), lesser kestrel (Falco<br />
naumanni), red-footed falc<strong>on</strong> (Falco<br />
vespertinus), black-tailed godwit<br />
(Limosa limosa), great spine<br />
(Gallinago media), great bustard<br />
(Otis tarda), black-winged<br />
pranticole (Glareola nordmanni),<br />
European roller (Coracias<br />
garrulous) are the threatened or<br />
near threatened bird species<br />
recorded in Lake Kuyucuk.<br />
Criteria 3<br />
Lake Kuyucuk bears a significant<br />
value for the l<strong>on</strong>g-term<br />
<br />
and ecological richness with<br />
respect to its flora and fauna<br />
characteristics.<br />

With 214 bird species Lake Kuyucuk<br />
supports 77 percent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the bird<br />
species recorded in Kars, 45<br />
percent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the bird species all<br />
around <str<strong>on</strong>g>Turkey</str<strong>on</strong>g> and more than half<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the bird species recorded in<br />
Caucasian hotspot. The lake<br />
supports thousands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ruddy<br />
shelducks and hundreds <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> blacknecked<br />
grebe in falls, springs and
