Land Tenure / Proprietorship<br />
The area within the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Ramsar</str<strong>on</strong>g> Site boundaries are public property, there are no private<br />
property lands. There are private property agriculture lands and public property steppe<br />
areas outside the site boundaries.<br />
C<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> Statuses<br />
Meke Crater Lake Natural M<strong>on</strong>ument was designated as a Natural Site <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1 st Degree in<br />
1989 and a 260-hectare part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> it was designated as a natural m<strong>on</strong>ument in1998.<br />
Opening new wells in the regi<strong>on</strong> was banned in 2003. The site was designated as a<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Ramsar</str<strong>on</strong>g> Site in 2005.<br />
Meke Maar <str<strong>on</strong>g>Ramsar</str<strong>on</strong>g> Site meets 3 out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 9 criteria for identifying wetlands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

The site sustains biological<br />
diversity. It also supports<br />
numerous endemic plant<br />
species.<br />
Though Anatolian lands are rich with<br />
crater lakes, this <strong>on</strong>e with its acidic lake<br />
in the caldera is a rare wetland.<br />
Allium sieheanum, Astragalus cicerellus,<br />
Gladiolus halophilus, Lepidium<br />
caespitosum, Lim<strong>on</strong>ium lilacinum,<br />
Sphaerophysa kotschyana, Verbascum<br />
pyroliforme are the threatened endemic<br />
plant species. Marsh harrier (Circus<br />
aeruginosus), black-winged stilt<br />
(Himantopus himantopus), great<br />
bustard (Otis tarda), little bustard<br />
(Tetrax tetrax) are the bird species<br />
protected under Birds Directive.<br />

MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE<br />
Since it is a <str<strong>on</strong>g>Ramsar</str<strong>on</strong>g> Site, it is under competency <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ministry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Envir<strong>on</strong>ment and Forestry,<br />
Provincial K<strong>on</strong>ya Directorate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Envir<strong>on</strong>ment and Forestry as well as under competency <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Provincial K<strong>on</strong>ya Directorate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Culture and Tourism for being a Natural Site.<br />
