considering the goals in all three dimensions. The clearer<br />

and more precise the requirements are phrased, the<br />

easier the communication between all persons involved,<br />

the negotiation of differences in interests and also the<br />

realization process is.<br />

The model of ‘critical sustainability’ enables the integration<br />

of environmental, social and economic requirements<br />

by design. The results are design concepts which reach<br />

farther than ecological design concepts because of considering<br />

the natural, social and cultural systems of equal<br />

importance.<br />

The model is based on a very creative attitude <strong>–</strong> not only<br />

on the side of the landscape architects but also on the<br />

side of the clients. The integrative design approach offers<br />

possibilities for an added value through design by searching<br />

for synergies between the different dimensions of<br />

sustainability. An achieved added value is a great design<br />

accomplishment by the landscape architect but this has<br />

also to be asked for by the client.<br />

All actors involved face a great challenge by steering the<br />

process of sustainability actively and creatively to develop<br />

public open space as a solid structure in settlement<br />

areas.<br />
